As the Consumer Electronics Show grows near, NVIDIA partners are having to get their ducks in line for the upcoming show in the second week of January. However many are asking, why exactly they should be there spending hard earned money with nothing to show off except rebadged parts for generations past? Certainly the 8800 GTX / GTS 250 has seen many CES presentations before. We have word from several different sources that NVIDIA is doing its best to have "working" Fermi-based video cards to show off for CES. We are unsure as to what level they will be shown working, if at all, but for all you NVIDIA fans, this is certainly something good to hear.

Even given a best case scenario for NVIDIA, we here at HardOCP.com find it hard to believe that NVIDIA will get any "real" amount of product to market by March of next year. NVIDIA has yet to speak one word to us about the gaming abilities of the Fermi GPU.

I have a thread on the subject of Fermi and from what I read here at the [H] and on the Nvidia website and without any benchmarks so far, I think I'm going to have to pass.

I doubt they'll have it ready in time if they don't even have some benchmarks yet. So I agree.

Here we go. so much for Fud claiming Fermi release end of november or early december

A bonus to those people waiting for hard benchmark numbers on the GT300, if it doesn't come out until early next year (March/April) or maybe a bit later, prices on 5870 and possibly 5870x2 will have come down

It Nvidia does not come out with something this year they are going to lose alot of customers. I plan on purchasing a 5870 for my new build in December.

Not to mention AMD has a refresh or new card waiting just for Fermi, you can bet your butt on that....

A quote from another forum.

Im building a new rig in a while. Should I get a 5 series now or wait for the next nvidia cards and the 6 series?

nVidia is in real trouble and I think we all know that. They're a graphics company and have no graphics card to show.

I'd like to suggest that they're intelligent enough to cede victory this round to AMD in the graphics arena while they develop this 'Fermi' card for computing purposes other than graphics. Perhaps they are a company in transition at the moment. Sometimes to take a step forward you have to take two steps back.

ATI/AMD is back and that makes for better products from both them and NVIDIA in the future.

even if fermi blows 58xx away.. they have no answer (that we are aware of ) for juniper and yet to be released redwood and cedar

THere is always truth behind price because the price is always right. Maybe not at some instant in time, but eventually price is the ultimate truth revealer.

Ever since mid September, NVDA stock price has been steadily declining. It means investors are starting to sweat. Doesn't really point to any great expectations for NVDA in the coming months.

You guys, the ramifications for this are greater than simply whether or not nVidia will have a faster graphics card than AMD. I think in nVidia's mind, all that is now secondary to what they hope to do with Fermi.

nVidia is taking a big risk which I think could make or break them with their divergence from a simple GPU designer/manufacturer to a company that has their hands in a variety of different industries becuase with their new GPU which would be a computational powerhouse.

I think Nvidia should stop going after Cuda / Cgpu market which so far is only has theoretical potential and stop trying to make their architectures the jack of all trades.

*snorts*

Okay, that was funny :D I guess all those scientists, hospitals and businesses running high-performance tasks on GPUs are just confused :p

It's a real shame that nVidia is taking so long this time around. Fermi looks like the long-awaited shift towards a more generic GPU/vector processor design Intel has been hyping for years with its Larrabee. I have no doubt that Fermi as cGPU heralds the future of GPUs, it's just annoying that the future has been postponed for a few more months :(

Since september NVDA has lost 27%
Since the middle of October, AMD has lost 27% of it's value. It looks like AMD's investors are sweeting even more! Oh, wait It's just cherry picking bullshit that means nothing.

Edit: This is now a PSA, don't post when tired.

Lol....

But Charlie's probably right, no chance for a launch anytime soon. He's also saying the Cypress refresh will hit around the time Fermi becomes available.

Juniper is simply a 5870x2. Nvidia has an answer to that, it's called an x2 version of the 380 ala 395. You act as if Nvidia has never made a dual GPU card before.

NV can't get a normal version of Fermi working what makes you think they've even bothered trying the X2 model yet?

If they are struggling to just produce a few (I'm thinking that you don't need that many for a trade show...could be wrong on this though) for January then I would be surprised if they even hit the March deadline. Not good news for Nvidia.

Kind of off topic, but damn TMSC for screwing up their 40nm production.

Somebody really needs to make one of those 'Hitler' youtube videos about Fermi with Jen-Hsun as Hitler.

Yeah, I guess it shows what happens when everyone puts their eggs into one basket :(

If I do not see a product fro Nvidia by January, I will def be purchasing a 5870 or 5870x2 (if and when they do come out) Very disapointed by Nvidia this time around....

I seriously doubt TSMC is really screwing them up right now.

there should be more issue than a simple fact....

Juniper is Radeon HD 5700 series (5770 and 5750).

ugh. Sorry I was thinking hemlock. Just got finished putting together this post (genmay, rant at best buy) and not thinking straight.

It's ok, I'm sure Nvidia will shrink and speed up the 9800 GTX+ and call it a GTS 250... errr I mean speed up the GTS 250 and call it a GTS 350. Man, some serious deja vu there.

erm... Juniper is 5750 and 5770... Whatever happened to our NVDA stock argument? and Q1 vs. Q2 fermi release... Vengeance you're normally sharper than this... :D

it may not be them. TSMC is the ones that may be screwing them.

TSMC are screwing mass production, not causing Nvidia's engineering issues. Unless you have some reason to believe yields dropping from 60% to 40% causes a delay in the engineering phase? If anything Nvidia are going to launch after TSMC sort themselves out..

Such a mess, and Intel hasn't even entered the arena yet. I almost feel sorry for them, but then I come to my senses.

Yes because Kyle and Charlie are both reknown leaders for inner workings of Nvidia and now what they are thinking and doing on a day to day basis.

Anything concerning Fermi should all be concidered FUD. Unless we see nothing by XMAS. Seems alot of people have fergotten Nvidia was very very quiet about about G80 until about 4 weeks til launch.

Charlie is a douche, claims Fermi(G300) wont be but 10-20% faster of 5870 and has claimed in the past performance wins for ATI over Nvidia for competeing generations. He is a paid AMD tool and should be ignored.

Two weeks ago in the 275+PhysX on a board thread I posted

"I hope that's not the only new Nv card we get this year, for my wallet's sake I need competition in the GPU market before shelling out for a DX11 this christmas"

Grats on the crazy good months to come, AMD

(5XX0 series? Definitely under-estimated the demand. Like they thought Nvidia would have something out - I would have ordered and launched with more cards, and that was a 200k+ worldwide launch - first new graphics card since the crisis after all.)

I thought that the GTS 250 was the same as the G92 based 8800 GTS 512, 9800 GTX and the 9800 GTX+ not the G80 based 8800 GTX
