Pretty sizeable underclock

The PCB had connection for 8+8 plugs but the final spec comes with 6+8

Chiphell thread where I found it: Watermark suggest they originated from hardware canucks but their site doesn't work for me.
http://bbs.chiphell.com/viewthread.php?tid=58357

If those specs are true, the 5970 is just crossfired 5850's without the gimped parts. Makes you wonder what the 5950's clocks are going to be. As well, if those specs are true, they also suggest that these cypress gpus have a core ceiling at around 1000mhz,give or take 50mhz, which, is what most folks have been able to overclock them to.

The chiphell thread is mistaken... the watermarked picture is actually of the 5850x2 NOT the 5870x2... I would know, I took the pictures.

While the speeds are at 5850 level, it still has 1600shaders. In order to get the card into thermal and power limits, they had to downclock compared to a 5870.

Also not true. I have seen a 5870x2 in action with stock 5870 speeds, save for the memory was slightly downclocked. The article is a forgery.

whoops, my bad. Guess it will be faster than crossfired 5850's, but slower than crossfired 5870's. Anyone with crossfired 5870's care to downclock to 725core/1000mem and do some benchies?

There will be 5870 clock speeds most likely by companies that do it. I bet we'll see 5980 or something like that later on.

Do you work for the ATI rumor control department???

And why does the gpu-z pic say 1600 unified shaders if it is supposed to be a 5950 pic?

Hmm, two 5870's in Crossfire use well over 370 watts at stock speeds. Even using a single PCB wouldn't reduce the power requirements that much. The card is supposed to have a 6+8pin plug, and I believe that that configuration only gives about 300watts, plus the 75 from the PCI-E slot itself. They would be cutting it quite close. As far as heat, if they build on the improvements from the 5870 cooler, they should be able to keep it reasonably cool, maybe topping out at around 88-90C.

yeah the 5970 is suppose to be clocked higher then the 5870's..

chiphell fails again..

little hard to leak specs that were already leaked by AMD months ago..

Nope. Just a guy in the right place at the right time, who met a guy with these cards.

the gpu-z pic shows nothing, could be photoshopped! Could just be a 5870 with reduced clocks or something, who knows. All I know is that it is 100% illegitimate, and that guy is just looking for attention.

Ok , I 'll take your word for it. Since you were there with a camera, did you play games on it? how many video outs does the card have, and does it do eyefinity??, since eyefinity is currently disabled under crossfire...

Yes there will be microstutter, or stutter? or whatever you want to call it its a part of the dual cards like 3 years till now.

Makes sense no? Reduce clocks on the memory to reduce power consumption to be well within the envelope allowed by 6+8pin power connections... very plausible. ATi themselves released a pic of not one but 2 of the cards and it was shown that they both used 6+8 pin connections. How they did it is beyond my area of expertise but I know it has to do with the power savings offered through the use of 1 pcb, 1 set of voltage regulators (albeit maybe slightly beefed up) and 1 set of vdimm vregs and all that.

They did it. It exists. And it was supposed to be released last friday (why they were delayed I do not know). Obviously, a 5870x2 (NOT A 5970... pshhh::rolleyes:) will not overclock as well as a 5870 in CF config (no 1ghz OCs here) because of the power restraints.

Did not play games on it, since I saw it the day the 5870 was released to the public and the drivers did not work correctly for the 5870x2 (heck, 5870 drivers were buggy remember?).

Card has 2x dvi and 1 displayport. If you look at the pics posted on Hardwarecanucks you'll be able to confirm the same.

No idea about eyefinity, but I would assume that it will work.. since all press releases about eyefinity hinted that you would in fact require one of the x2 cards to use 6 monitors in eyefinity configuration (there will be a variant of the card that has 6 displayport outputs to make that possible)

The PCB had 8+8 in mind so is it possible that they will release a higher clocked 8+8 in the future? Thermal issues not withstanding.

got a question for you...

you live in China?

If this card does use full speed R870 chips(I'll believe that when it's released), then kudos to AMD for some serious power optimization. I didn't know that underclock the mem by a little(1200vs1000) could reduce power so much. The one thing I'm really wanting to know is if it comes with 1GB or 2GB of memory per GPU. Since this card will be perfect for Eyefinity, the extra memory capacity would do wanders. H

I would guess it will have more than 1gb in order to push 6 monitors. Maybe Gaming_Zedman still has the pics on his camera http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/9507/ojmt88.jpg and can zoom in on the memory chips so we can see....

Are we sure this is the 5970 and not the 5950?

The leaked specs from AMD a while back showed slightly higher GPU clocks compared to the 5970, not lower. It'd be a bit disapointing to find the 5970 is slower than 2 5870s, if the price is close to 2x5870s then i'd probably skip this board and go for crossfire 5870s

All depends on the price really.

interesting specs, and one hell of an engineering achievement, but i think i'd rather have a brace of 2GB 5870 cards each running on their own PCIe 2.0 16x slot.

Shaders = 1600? Why would they make a 5850x2 like this? That means the 5870x2 would just be an overclocked 5850x2?

This looks very much like the GTX 295. Instead of full GTX 280 x 2 it was a mutant called GTX275 later but I would not be too concerned seeing how the GTX295 is able to OC pass the GTX 285 with ease.
I guess it is common for companies to do this but power users can "fix" it as long as they only lower clocks and do not start crippling the cards like removing shaders, etc.
just my .02

Nvidia only had one dual GPU solution for that series so I can kinda understand why they did what they did. If ATI releases a 5850x2 with the listed specs then the release of a 5870x2 just seems pointless. Maybe there will only be one X2 card by ATI?

Zedman is right. The clocks are not legit. An associate of mine has handled the card and seen clocks with it installed. He has pretty much never been wrong when it comes to these kind of leaks as well.

The ABT article was updated (due to contact from AMD) to say that the board was a leaked engineering sample and not final, which means its specs are probably not final. I would expect them to reach the 5870 speeds to be honest, the cooling on these boards always has loads of headroom the fans tend to run at about 30% at max load.

I have a question, I don't know if anyone can answer...these new 8 pin PCI-E power cables, I dont have any on my Antec Quattro PSU only the 6 Pin ones, do these cards come with a converter to add 2 6 Pins into 1 8 Pin or something like that, or does it mean buying a new PSU with 8 pin support?

Hey, this dude claims to have been there, might as well ask him questions...

Just read this thread and i hate people quoting themself.

Really it is a pretty monolithic effort to get 2 full spec 5870 gpu's running at full clockspeed onto 1 pcb, gg Ati.

The only thing i am worried about is that the cooler wont keep it at reasonable temp's, but we will see.
