I recently bought an active usb extension cable and when I connect it to my external HDD, the hub in the middle of the cable lights up and windows installed 'generic usb hub' drivers. But other than that it doesnt detect the actual drive. Any ideas?

Can you take the HDD out of the enclosure and put it in the computer and is it recognized?

Does disk manager (diskmgmt.msc) recognize the drive?

little over doing it.. all he has to do is plug it in normally with the usb cable without the hub in the middle to check.. if that didnt work.. then id go with your suggestion..
did it work before without the hub or have you tried connecting it without the hub? have you tried leaving the hard drive on then plugging it into the hub.. or tried plugging it into the hub then turning the hard drive on? some of the most little things could cause winblows to not detect an external drive.. but at the same time the hub might not be able to support the external drive.. or its bad..

then my guess would be that the hub doesnt support external drives.. time to return it if you can and get a different one..

what are you doing, sharing it with 2 computers and just swapping the cables instead of moving the drive?
but honestly if you need that long of a cable it would be easier to just go the lan route?

No, you need a powered hub or repeater. 5m is the max length for a USB2.0 cable.

Uh, no, not if it won't work for his needs.
@OP: What do you need a 30'+ USB cable for anyhow? ... and answer my question above.
In theory any device that doesnt need to draw power from the USB port can be operated without a hub (from what ive read). I need a 30ft cable because I want to keep the HD in a closet out of site and hook it up to my laptop. I know I could go the NAS route etc etc, but I dont need anything that complicated and figured a simple USB cable would suffice.

closet has bad airflow, which means heat. heat kills HDDs. let it out of the closet.
This will be the 3rd post asking the same question... lets try and rephrase... have you tried any other USB device on your repeater? If so, does it work? If so, what is it? If not, get a new hub/repeater.

It *may* work, but I wouldn't count on it. It is out of spec. 5m is the max cable length for powered or un-powered devices.
If you run shit out of spec, don't expect it work correctly.

30 foot even with a repeater is still long for USB 2.0 spec. You either need to get the drive closer or use a differant interface like Wired/ Wireless Lan. Another problem that could be causeing the issue is power draw from the Extender causing low power issues.
Some powered HD cases still use USB power for the USB section and uses the external PSU just for the hard drive.
Bottom line, your just pushing the limits to far.
