I'm getting really poor performance in this game, mostly in the 15-25 fps area. Even the graphics settings seem to matter very little; the gap between maxed and minimum is basically like 5 fps.

I realize, of course, that this is a PhysX title, so I considered that maybe my 3.8ghz qx9650 just wasn't fast enough to do the( seemingly non-existant ) physics. However, after playing for a couple of minutes then checking the task manager for the CPU utilization, I found that 3 of my cores were doing nothing at all and that the last and only active core was barely above 50% most of the time( and never above 80% ).

So...is my fps problem because of the physics? And if so, why isn't it using more cores and CPU power to process it? Or could it be a problem with my video card( Cat9.5 on Vista7RC )?

well try turning off the hardware and/or advanced physx effects in the game menu and see. why didnt you try that?

EDIT: you probably need to fully exit out and restart the game when changing those settings

Tried all that, none of it made any difference. And yes, I did restart the game after changing the setting.

Somehow managed to get my good old 9800GX2 up and running again though, and it's doing 30'ish fps with everything maxed where the 4830 is doing only 15'ish fps with everything at medium. Oddly enough, turning on/off hardware PhysX, either in-game or in the control panel, makes no difference to my fps even with the GX2.

Guess it really is one of those 'The way it's meant to be played' games, physics or no physics.

Here's your problem: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/crossfire_vs_sli/10.htm
Yikes  It probably translates to single cards too, I'll keep googling though, this is interesting.

EDIT: FWIW, I think the game is rather poorly coded considering the FPS and the visuals produced. Some of the hardware physics is pretty neat (especially fluids!), but maxing out the game I'm getting only 25-60FPS.

It lags hard on my GTX 260 and my friends GTX 280 so I am not surprised it kills a 4830. Not to be racist or anything but Eastern European developers usually don't do the best in optimization.

I think it's due to most of them being so small; they simply don't have the staff to adequately bug test and optimize (which takes some time even with many testers). Another example is STALKER - great series, but some serious bugs and optimization flaws that had to be sorted after release. I remember reading a joke that said GSC was 30 Ukrainian's typing away in some basement in Kiev, but I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't too far from the truth (I'm Ukrainian btw, so I take pride it :p).
