Is there a way to attempt to fix it while knowing I can't make it worse? It's on a 2005wfp.

Monitor on:

I think the 2nd photo makes it look a bit worse than it is.

I received the monitor this way so I'm not sure how it was scratched. I tried rubbing it with a paper tower and rubbing alcohol but it didn't change anything.

If you bought it new, then return it for another.

Any attempt to repair it yourself will just make it worse.

I knowingly bought it scratched, taking a chance in hopes it wouldn't be very noticeable...and its not, on darker colors. I will live with it if I have to but would like it fixed if possible.

it's it gouged or is it raised? if it was scratched by another monitors bezel there might be able to just clean it off being firm but not ogre like. the company I work for refurbs lcds and I've seen plenty of lcds scuffed by others... if it's gouged you're SOL

I think it was definitely scratched/scuffed because isopropyl alcohol and some rubbing isn't doing anything. I also tried using a white eraser from a mechanical pencil--didn't work. I came across a trick after some googling--filling the scratch with vasoline/petroleum jelly. It certainly helped some but is still somewhat noticeable. If I get adventurous I may tape it off and go at with some some abrasives.

even a small scratch on a display would be annoying but that is huge. seriously why would you even fool with buying this in the first place?

Meguiras makes a plastic polish "Mirror Glaze17" that is designed to remove scratchs from plastic. A friend of mine used it to restore his dashboard instrament pannal, and it made a big difference. By the picture above I think the scratch is to big/wide to rub out, but you could try it.

I may try something similar as I have a few abrasive detailing products.

Because I got it ridiculously cheap. It's also used as a secondary monitor but a lot of the time its off.

Here is what vasoline did:

As you can see its better. I'm still deciding if its worth trying to improve.
