I love my Blackberry Storm!

This is hardforum, not engadget. Hence, your post isn't valid.

1. Have you had one for greater than 2 weeks?
2. Have you used firmware .103, .106?
3. Have you put a spacer in between the battery cover and the battery to lessen the travel distance of the press?
4. Have you loosened the Torx 6 screws to allow for a lighter press and more rebound?
5. Have you tried it in a case which further tightens the package and makes the surepress even easier?

My Storm requires much less force to activate the press and does it in less than 1/2 the distance it used too before the mods. Combined w/ using the qwerty for a solid 2 weeks, I think typing on the keyboard's a joy and quite fast.

interesting... can you give me more information on that mod? i've had my storm for about a month and i hate typing on it. i came from the iphone, and i miss it because it was a lot easier to type than my storm.

Optionally, and some consider possibly damaging later on due to bending of the phone/screen, you can lessen the travel distance of the surepress screen by putting thin objects such as this Zalman sticker or a felt button from under your couch.

The $10 case from Fry's came w/ a holster clip that screws in. To keep the screw from scratching the phone, they included a small rubberish sticker to place over it. This further pushes my screen and keeps the overall travel of the click to a minimum. Combined w/ the TORX 6 mod, it now takes minimal effort to click, travels a very short distance, and returns much faster than before.

Here's a better look at the distance covered by the button.

Been playing with my new Storm for a few days. I'm diggin' it big time. One thing I noticed immediately is the Storm's weight. It's heavy compared to other Blackberries I've held. I'm guessing the glass screen adds the extra weight. It just feels like a solid, quality item.

My 8320 is officially retired. ;)

Great stuff!!

I downloaded several of the apps from HowardForums, but can't load them on my Storm. The Application Loader doesn't recognize .jad files as apps. It keeps looking for .alx and .ali files.

Try browsing the thread on your phone and just clicking the links.

I'm having a problem with my Storm. The accelerometer is getting on my nerves. It's so sensitive and keeps flipping between portrait/landscape as I use it. Even slight movements trigger the accelerometer. It's getting quite frustrating. As far as I know, there's no way to disable the accelerometer. Any chance that future firmware updates might include a disable function? I might have to return my Storm otherwise. :(

You've tried firmware .109? It's still no iPhone, but it's come a LONG way since the .75 I received.

The .109 isn't official. And not being official means BlackBerry sees something with it that warrants further work. I know from reading Crackberry that these leaked releases are super special awesome except for the bunch of people who get lockups, things not working, lost contact lists, and whatever else. .109 is no different.

I am just concerned that BB is changing SO much between official releases that they are just creating more problems. I would have preferred releases focusing on specific things and fixing those things (ie. the uselessly slow camera) piece by piece rather than try to fix everything and take months to do it.

You must have made a wrong turn somewhere. But it looks like they're for sale, so you're in luck. :p Have you tried .109? I've only had the thing for a little over 3 weeks but so far, I have managed to:

1. back up all my contacts and settings from .75.
2. completely brick the thing on Windows 7 (red light, no display) in an attempt to load .103. :*(
3. bring it back to life on XP and got a freshly coated .75 from BB's official site. :D
4. load .103 in XP and import all my settings from .75.
5. load the .106 hybrid and let DM manage the back up and restoration of contacts and settings.
6. update to .109 using Windows 7 successfully w/ no hitches in about 10 - 15 minutes (it was either the compat update last week or checking compat for xp)

It leaks memory, I've pulled the battery 3x since installing 5 days ago. But I've also enjoyed a much faster OS. The vibrate shortcut's broke, but the previous lag when typing has been reduced. I've only used 4 OS, but each seems to have a glossier shine than the version before it. I've suffered my share of lost crap from software not running @ 100%, but it's at a much lesser extent than what I read on forums. If you haven't tried it, give it a shot. What do you have to lose? Time? Unfortunately, that's not for sale. :( But you can gain some w/ the shorter delay in camera ops on newer firmwares.

Does .109 have a feature that disables the accelerometer? I'm on .103 at the moment.

Yeah, apparently there are no plans for such a disable feature. I'm going to try to figure a way to lessen the accelerometer's sensitivity. If I can't do it, then I'll probably have to return my Storm and wait for the Niagara. :(

I'm not sure of you're time window for return, but apparently the 31st of March will see an official update that's far better than what we have now. That said, what exactly are you having issues w/ on the AM?

First time I heard something about it was a CS manager, then either hofo or cb forums. The BOGO deal also ends on 31st. It would be nice if App World gets released then too. That bullshit come back @ 10 for exciting news had me throwing bananas at the screen yesterday!

EDIT: Nm, not forums, it was bgr. That posting actually got me all riled up about the Storm. I had a dare at the time and HATED the resistive touchscreen that had to be press swiped instead of relax swiped like iphone/storm. Then I figured damn, I could get my bro one. And before long I found out about all the betas. They lowered the price from the $279.99 to $199.99 and then with my ne2 I got mine and bro's for $99. The monthly data fee sucks, but it's nice to be so well connected all the time.

Sometimes it pisses me off, but for the most part, I'm extremely pleased w/ the phone. Calls sound fantastic, emails never fail, and the browser's more than usable in column mode for most sites. Yesterday I used Google maps and GPS while listening to a podcast in my car. I've no idea how I lived without a portable pc for so long!

ok so i just got a hand me down bb storm, the main menu seems laggy was there a firmware or software update after it was 1st released?

Like 10 of them. .103 was nice. .109 has a memory leak. .114 has some sort of keyboard issue. Go to the crackberry forums for more info.

guess its time to update, i can find all the updates on blackberry.com rite?

So I've been out of the loop.

Was the last official Verizon released firmware update back in Dec. of 08?

It's the nasty .75. Rumor has it the 31st will see something new. But then Apple will have already showed off 3.0 and I'll be sad. :(

I scoured the crackberry website and noticed they released a new os update somewhat recently. Going to download it and hope for the best.

The Storm is definitely a solid phone. If I were able to use it on GSM networks with 3G speeds, I definitely would've picked it up.

But my roommate's Storm has really bad call quality, sounds distorted and unnatural. This is compared to my N85 on T-Mobile EDGE, calling a home phone (I called home on his Storm after my N95 was funking up). Same with my other roommate and his Verizon Touch Pro, whose earspeaker isn't very clear and is also somewhat quiet. This is in NYC (Greenwich Village), too.

The build is solid and the screen looks great, and my roommate can't stop raving about it. But I'm really not convinced about the claims of great call quality on the Verizon network based on what I've heard so far.

My bro's sounds pretty wack too. He's too lazy to return it though.

Does your mate run the latest firmware?

Yeah, he's pretty hardcore about it. The type of person that checks CrackBerry every fifteen minutes. Surprised he hasn't raised an issue about the mediocre, if not bad, earspeaker quality.

so I finally got tired of waiting for verizon to release 4.7.0.113. downloaded it myself and installed. suffice to say I'm rather glad I did. much more responsiveness.

Do you have any issues w/ the dial pad not coming up while making a call? For example, when dealing w/ robots on the phone?

Get the unlocked one that Newegg sells...costs a lot but you can get one.

.113 is supposedly newer then .114 due to some sfi files being more up to date then .114 But there's a whole conspiracy theory going on in the crackberry storm forums about it :p

.113 on my storm. It's great, it's fast, and Slacker Radio is kickass.

Oh man! 109 got nasty with me after installing a bunch of apps. Never more than 25mb free.

Just stepped up to 122 and after a quick pull I'm @ 41 megs free! I did delete the asian symbols in app loader this time tho.

The guis snappier, the new selection modes useful, but damn opera mini hauls now! Even remembered to keep me logged in.

TY rim!
