Earlier this week there were people reporting that some Ultra 750W X2 PSUs they had recently purchased were actually incorrectly labeled 550W PSUs. Representatives from Ultra have responded and have issued the following statement / remedy:

Dear Readers and Editors of HardOCP,

It has recently come to our attention that there are some Ultra X2 750W power supplies in the market which were incorrectly labeled (part numbers ULT40121 and ULT40122). We are currently investigating what gaps in our quality control allowed this issue to occur. Unfortunately, Wintech, our OEM manufacturer for these parts is no longer in business and, as such, we will not be able to hold them liable for any issues presents to our company and ultimately our customers. Regardless, Ultra is taking immediate action to mitigate this issue.

Ultra will offer a free replacement upgrade to our new X3 850W power supply (ULT40312) to anyone encountering this issue regardless of warranty status. If affected by this issue, please call 888-222-5487 or email [email protected] and our support staff will assist you with your replacement.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause our customers.

Excellent response, I'm in the market for a few PS's and I will check into their product line deeper.

They really fell off the ladder with that screw up, but in my book, they just climbed back up a couple rungs.

Most of the X3 line seems to actually be pretty good. Or at least was, I don't know if they have changed manufacturers for that line or not since last seeing real reviews done on them.

ROFL, so it is not an issue when the units flat out suck in reviews and can't do over even 500w, but when they get caught slapping the labels over the already overrated 550w label, it becomes a huge deal. I think they should have started looking at what was wrong when this review was first published: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQ2MCwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

I agree, you'd think they might want to start doing some quality control when their "750w" PSU failed at 500w.

Eh it is what it is, i think they handled the situation pretty well, better than most companies. I mean if you didn't read the review and bought it i kinda think it's your fault. Just like audio companies who label 1000 watt amps, as a 1000 watts and you don't take the time to look at rms value, used to be peak power is what they put sometimes 5x that of rms power which was really deceiving.

They still released a bad product mislabeled or not. To hell with Ultra.

Alot of companies drop the ball on a few releases. At least they know how to compensate. Shows a little effort to improve their business. I used their products before with the original ultra modular power supplies and it ran like a champ.

Now that sounds like quality customer service.

Good job Ultra!

o come on ...thats a lot of sweat talk but lets hope the customers "do" really get the promised 850watts supply without a hassle...until i see ppl really getting those promised replacements for free easily "in their hands", i am still skeptical of their word

at least they recongized it, and offered an apology of replacement for a better psu.

makes me wish i had a bunk ultra.

That sounds very...reassuring. I wonder how long the OEM manufacturer for their current lineup will stay in business...

I still don't see this as a good job. It was a laughable 750W unit and a bad 550W unit. To hell with the label issue, it's still a POS! If Ultra really wanted to take responsibility, they would address why two of their units posted here couldn't put out more than 50% of the rated power.

Too little, too late.

The X2 line has been replaced with the significantly better X3 line, so they have improved their quality.

It's nice that they responded so quickly to this problem, but it almost seems like they're using the Wintech out-of-business thing as a scapegoat. But i guess we'll see what happens.

I wonder if anyone can find the X2 750W defective units on ebay and send them in for a free replacement? There is an idea

Wintech who made them went out in September. The X3 line is made by Andyson and is probably in a bit better shape than Wintehc was.

Wintech really did go out of business. As for how it happened well....

The question is: Was the "gap in their quality control" the labelling of 550W PSUs as 750W, or the failure to remove the 550W label first.

I have the X3 1000W, I have two Corsairs(750 and 620W) and I have three PCP&C (510x2 and one 850).

I have found the X3 to be an excellent PSU. Comparable or better than any of the others I own.It has performed under heavy loads without a problem for 18 months.

I would recommend the X3 to anyone.:D

The 550/750 deal was somebody's screw up.........but Ultra has stepped up.
Their customer service is somewhere outside Chicago, they speak english, and were very helpful when I had questions.

whilst i agree its good they are doing something, i have to wonder if this was a mistake or cost cutting and hopping no one noticed. either way, cool they get a new psu!

Uh, you guys are smarter than to believe that this was anything other than a deliberate
attempt at subterfuge. (Nvida re-badging anyone?) Then they blame it on another
company, that is conveniently out-of-business?

True Overclockers/Gamers probably don't use Ultra stuff, so they can easily pull the wool over on the average Joe buying these things, absolutely shameful of them.

I have an Ultra X3 1000watt PSU. I would not have gotten this PSU if it had not gotten a Gold Award from the [H]. I have been useing it for a while now and the voltages are rock solid and its been an excellent PSU. The X3 850 is a newer model and I truely hope that it is as good as the 1000 and 1600 PSUs.

Conversation taking place at Ultra:
George, stop printing the 750 watt stickets. We now need more X3 800 stickers ASAP. This time make sure you remove the 550 watt stickers prior you idiot! ;)

the funniest line ever in a psu review...

"It seems that no corner was left uncut and the 750w rating seemed dubious from the start."

I wonder if the OEM did this as a cost saving measure and Ultra had no idea.

Anyways.....

They are making it right.

I have had pretty good success with Ultra power supplies. I am still using a Ultra 550W in my Phenom II rig, and this power supply has been through some serious abuse. My girlfriends rig still has the the original 500W X-Connect, and my HTPC is still running a 4 year old 500W Ultra. Maybe I have just been lucky?

The fact of the matter is that Ultra has a history of using low-quality OEMs and bad quality control, and this was an unforgivable "mistake" (more like negligence). Even if their X3 line-up is high quality (and I've seen plenty of reviews that indicate that it is), I still don't trust Ultra as a company, and I don't have any faith that they won't let their quality control slip again in the future.

Sure, they MAY have learned their lesson, they MAY only use high-quality OEMs from now on, and they MAY have improved their quality control since these units were made... but why would I want to take the chance of buying what MAY be a good power supply when I can buy a power supply from a company with a proven track record like Corsair or PCP&C? No thanks. I still won't be buying any Ultra power supplies, even if they did handle this fiasco as well as they could have. It's not good enough for me.

Ditto, the fact that they didn't make so much as a peep when the 750W review came out (yet the review for the 1600W is on their forum so they do read here), and only came out when the shit storm reached truly epic scale show that they still haven't learned one bit.

Excellent summation.

I posted this a while back and Ultra says they are meeting condition #2,
lets hope that they will go all the way and join the ranks of the "Proven Good" PSU suppliers.
Challenge to Ultra:

(1) Stop acquisition of "known problems" & flush the existing pipeline.
(2) Replace (at no cost to users) all "mis-labeled" PSU's with models worthy of their stickers.
(3) Provide about a dozen (12) samples of each of the the remaining "good" PSU's, & I am sure that many PSU enthusiast and writers, including myself, will assist in getting these properly tested & the results well publicized at minimal or no cost to Ultra.
Always Build with the Best,
Dave :)
