Ok so I just got my q9550, I love this processor already.

However, since I put this processor in I can NOT get the memory stable. it is the Corsair Dominator 2gbx2 kit (with the fan).

Due to the Multiplier options of the q9550 (limited to 8.5 or less) I am forced to run say a 450 FSB. My options are to overclock or underclock the ram. No matter which I do, It will not pass orthos if I do a Memory or Mem/cpu Test. (I can run CPU test no problem).

I had this ram stable with my q6600 but the only way I could get it stable was to have it run at EXACTLY 1066. Any less or more and it seems to crap out.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't understand why it wouldn't be stable at 900mhz @ stock voltage and timings. If I OC it to 1088 and up the voltage I still can't get it stable, I am losing my mind.

Oh yeah and BTW I just ordered this CPU Friday and I still got a damn C1. I thought for sure Newegg would be out of them by now. Has a damn higher VID than my Q6600 :(.

What settings are you trying to run with the sticks? Try running them at 900MHz, loosening your timings to 5-5-5-15, and raising your VDIMM to 2.0V (assuming that you're trying to run tighter timings or lower voltage at the moment; feel free to correct me if you aren't). If that doesn't work, try raising your VMCH to 1.30V while maintaining the aforementioned settings.

As for you getting a C1; it really isn't that bad. Most of them are good for 3.8GHz (mine included), which is a very nice overclock from any perspective. Although it would be nice to have the bragging rights of hitting 4GHz stable, realistically there's very little actual benefit to it.

3.84ghz stable is not a problem for this c1 cpu, but I can't get the ram stable with it.

With the ram at 900mhz at those timing and 2.1v (what ram runs stock) the ram is not stable *shrug*.

It is a p45 (it's in my sig)

Ideally I'd like to run 1066 but shy of running the CPU at only 3.4 I can't find a good way to do that.

I tried settings the FSB to 533 (allows me to set ram to 1066) with a 7 multi (would result in 3.73ghz) but seems to be some sort of FSB wall at that point?

What timings are you trying to use? Also, have you tried the suggestions I made in my last post?

Wow, ram not passing memtest with reccomended voltage, and loose timings.... BELOW rated speed? Sounds defective to me.

As for 533MHz fsb, that would be more impressive than 4GHz. 500MHz plus seems to be very rare. My x48 only makes it to 476MHz.

Hey I figured it was worth a try to get that 1066 :)

I just told you that was trying it at the timings you suggested (which is actually the same timings I was running wiht my q6600 just at 1066)

I don't know what VMCH is or where to find it, I took a look in my bios and came up empty.

Right now I can boot windows, play games, run 3dmark, etc.. I'm at 3.83ghz with the settings you mentioned (5-5-5-15 900mhz, 1:1, 450fsb, 2.1v on DRAM, 1.3v on vcore)

If I run orthos CPU only test, it will go stable (only tried for 1 hr so far) but if I do the blend (CPU + Ram) it lasts 1-8minutes before failing, same with if I try memory test.

Orthos load doesn't go past 63c on core 1 (other cores all lower)

Ah, sorry about that. I misread your post.

VMCH is the northbridge voltage. I don't remember what ASUS calls it, but it's probably something like NB voltage.

Yeah I tried setting NB VOlt to 1.3 with no luck there either.

Now to make things funner the BSOD's from the ram have killed my OS, yay!

I wouldn't think running it at stock Voltage would hurt, but I did try 2.0, I could try lower I guess.

Now I need to reinstall the OS first thanks to the awesome BSOD's provided :).

Been there, done that, and it does suck.

Are you able to test the ram in another system? Or, get known good ram to test in yours?

If the motherboard's memory controller is defective it would have nearly identical symptoms.

The memory works perfect at 1066. I can't get it to run stable at anything else, higher or lower. Tried multiple different manual timings, auto, higher voltage, lower voltage.

I ran this ram for the last few months with the same board @ 1066 with no problems.

new CPU does not "allow" for 400 fsb (3.4ghz is wimpy) and so I can't get the ram to run at 1066.

Does not allow for 400MHz? Try dropping the multiplier - for testing purposes, and run the fsb at 400MHz.

Thinking of BIOS now, are you using the latest BIOS for your board?

...I understand where you're coming from, and trying to think of feasible route for diagnosing this. Remember that electrical components do fail after use, and sometimes spontaneously giving no symptoms before being the magic smoke comes out. So, try to stay open-minded to some of these suggestions (like trying different ram, or the ram in a different board). Doing so will help me, and others, want to help you.

What ic's are on that ram?

CM2X1024-8500C5
........................XMS850X v1.X...MICRON.........64Mx8...Rev.D (2.2 Volts)
........................XMS850X v2.X...Qimonda........64Mx8...70Nm (2.1 Volts)
........................XMS850X v3.X...Elpida............64Mx8...(2.2 Volts)
........................XMS850X v4.X...PSC..............128Mx8 (2.1 Volts)

Seems to me as it might be a voltage issue. Have you tried running memtest and see what it says? If they keep giving issues rma them and sell them off if you going to use another brand.

Good Day

I can run a 400fsb, but due to the crappy 8.5 multi on the q9550 that only puts my clock at 3.4ghz :(. I want to run 450fsb so that I can clock at 3.83.

I have tried many mnay bios settings. Running latest (1406?) bios on p5q deluxe.

I haven't tried memtest yet, I will have to look to see what mem chips are on it.

Ok I am starting to get confused.

I just ran memtest for 20 minutes with no problems. (in windows).

Ram at 1088, 2.2v, 5-5-5-15

If I run orthos CPU only test, No problems.

If I run Orthos Memtest... it fails

Are you suffering from any stability problems, besides benchmarks?

If I'm correct, I believe the Corsair to be rated for 2.1V. Anything more would be unneccesary according to the manufacturer, if it was needed for stability, I would definately believe it to be defective and RMA the parts.

If it were my memory, and I was able to run all my games, music, etc..., I'd be inclined to ignore the benchmarks/tests and just keep it rolling.

I just ran memtest86+ (from bootable iso) all tests and got 0 errors.

I can do everything fine except run orthos with memory tests.

Orthos CPU only test runs fine.

I am starting to think it is less of a Memory problem and more of an Orthos compatiblity issue with something.

I can play games/run benchmarks/etc...

I JUST can't run orthos Memory test or CPU + memory test.

I would think it was my overclock except I can run orthos cpu test 8 hrs + stable. Heat is far from an issue, voltage is on par with what most other people recommend.

I am running 2.2v on the ram just to be safe with the ever so slight OC (1088 instead of 1066).

Let me reitterate that this was NOT a problem 2 days ago. the only change is in CPU/FSB. And ofc making me switch the memory speed to 1088.

If that's the case, I'd uninstall Orthos... and live the rest of my life. Seems pretty clear to me! :)

haha I understand that logic, but it isn't in me to do that. I NEED to know why orthos worked before, and doesn't now :).

Does orthos not like 1800mhz rated FSB? Does it not like the ram over 1066? Does it not like me? lol.

It's really aggrivating :-D

One things for certain. If Orthos doesn't like you, I know I definately don't.

:D

I'll watch the thread to see if you ever come up with a cure... one strand of hair at a time.

Why thank you! :p

I am pretty much at the point of giving up, if I was having other problems I would HAVE to continue, but I have tried everything I can think of and it seems to be only Orthos that has an issue. I can run 3dmark06, Vantage, furmark, Memtest, memtest86+, COD5, GRID, Prime95... just not Orthos with mem tests *shrug*

Ok same problem in Prime95. Can run CPU test (one that says doesn't tet much ram) all night long. If I run Ram tests I get 1 core drop off right away then more failures to follow.

I ran memtest86+ through 3 passes (all tests) with no problems
I can stress my cpu (only) all night long Orthos or prime.

Where does this leave me?

Well using different link, I can set FSB to 425 (3.6ghz) and ram directly to 1066 and my computer is perfectly happy. 12+ hrs orthos stable with blend test.
