Card for Light Gaming

He never said that would be the limit of the gaming being done on the card. He only used the term ' a far cry' commenting that it's not a huge enthusiast machine. He did say it would be nice when people didn't notice what he actually said...

In a side note, to answer the un mentioned side question, the 500W power supply should be fine so long as it's not a total crap box. Most any notable brand 500W PSU should be more than fine.

Ha! This "far cry" business is cracking me up. I think I just happened to use the term. It IS a good example of a game I own and can't really play with my current machine on my current monitor though. Thanks for the PSU reply Max.

However. I've been hearing a lot of raves about this Fear. I think I need to play Fear. Does that change the game here at all? (srsly no pun intended)

Dude, if you never played FEAR you have got to.

I have yet to find a 1st person shooter that I enjoyed more than FEAR. Play it late at night with the lights out and some decent sound if you can.

A 9600 will be enough for FEAR, but a 4850 will be better. ;)

LOL! Here he comes back with the 4850 again. I'd like it but I'd like either a used one or a lower-priced one. I'll have to see.

I've heard Fear is lots scarier than Doom 3, and D3 definitely had its ohshit moments from what I recall.

EDIT: you mentioned playing it with the lights out and good sound if I can - since I'm building a home studio machine, we're talkin good sound alright :D

For my money I'd go with the Radeon 3870 or the Nvidia 9600 GT,
they're comprable cards and about the same price. The 9600 Gt was on sale on Newegg a week ago and my friend bought one, so if it still is, I'd grab it.

D3 was scary because of the damn flashlight. Fear was an excellent game, except for the super ninja kick.. i'm glad that bullet time didn't really unbalance gameplay.

because its its a good recommendation. bang for the buck its is the best mid range card. the 9600GSO 768 for 80 dollars is not bad, and if you watch for it you can get a 9600GT for a little less, the 4860 is nice as well as the 4830 for 90 bucks. but the 4850 takes you to mid range cards for little more. It can be had for only about 30 dollars more then the 4830 if you look around. and with the 4870 price drop I expect them to go lower starting this week.

4670 is very gimpy... I.E., limited, but if he is certain that he is going to stay within its slight parameters, then more power to him.

I do believe you are mistaken. The 4670 is quite fast, and keeps up with the 9600GT. It falls somewhere between the 3850 and 3870 (and beats them both easily once AA is turned on since it doesn't have the broken AA of the 2xxx/3xxx series)

Aiwin, can you shed some light as to what components you are getting as part of this home studio?

I have a quasi home studio myself for amatuer guitar recording.

Analog side:
Amp: Fender Deluxe Reverb (Reissue)
Pedals: Boss DS-1, Dunlop Wahwah
Guitars: Danolectric (Tele mod), Fender Strat (mexican), Art &L Acoutic 6 string, Epiphone 12 String, Yamaha Classical 6 String

Digital Side:
Digital Audio Workstation: ProTools M-Powered, Ableton Live Lite
Amp Modeler\Sound Card\Computer Interface\Mic PreAmp: M-Audio Black Box with Pedals
Guitar Synth: Roland GR-20
Speakers: M-Audio Bx5a
Guitar\Synth Controller: Godin xtsa

Both digital and analog side get recorded in digital on my main rig in sig, using the M-Audio Black box as an interface.

Take a look:

And the 4850 is a crippled 4870, and the GTX 260 is a crippled GTX 280, thats just how lower priced SKUs are made.

I wouldn't say the 4850 is a crippled version of 4870. They both have the same amount of shaders enabled; its just the use of different video memory technology. GDDR3 vs GDDR5.

And a lower clockspeed on the 4850, of course.

Cool photos! I don't have pics right now myself, but I've got two KRK RP5G2 Rokit monitors and a Presonus Firebox as my interface:

I'm running Steinberg's Cubase LE 4 right now as my sequencer. I don't have any soft synths yet but I'm primarily a guitarist myself and I'd LOVE to have something cool like, say, Guitar Rig 2. How does Godin work out for you? I haven't heard about it.

I play a Jackson Charvel electric and I've got a lower-end Martin 6-string acoustic too, but I mainly play electric lately. I actually have no electric amp currently, I just run my Line 6 Floor Pod directly into a mic input of the Firebox. I also have a Yamaha portable grand keyboard and a single mic for vocals too - with this many things it's reeeallly slow-going trying to learn how to use/record everything. Been playing guitar for a long time but I'm mostly a recording noob.

Do you have any of your stuff available to hear online?

OK I'm easily willing to take you on your word that the 4850 is a midrange card, but WHAT THE CHRIST?? MIDRANGE? What do you use for your premium selection, a Dodge Viper?? I don't own a car myself but if I do buy the 4850 I expect I'll be using it for roadtrips on the weekend.

you talking to people that shell out 400 something for their cards. (before rebate my GTX280 cost me 439 plus shipping.) so by those standards yes the 4850 @ 130AR is "mid range"

Is there such a thing as a low end martin? ;)

I dont have the balls and talent to put my stuff on the net. People are way too nasty. :(

Well it's not like I don't understand it. If I could, I would :)

I've install several 4850 for friends, no one has yet told me that they didn't think the card was worth the money. they were pretty impressed in fact.

Granted, a Martin's a Martin! It's just that this one has a spruce top rather than being all made from one piece. It's the least expensive six string Martin acoustic you can get, but it's still nice!

Well hey, if you do have any recordings you'd like to share I always like listening. No judgement here. I think it's awesome that you have a recording setup like that!
