Dell 2408WFP Now Available

It's too bad this is such a power hog. It throws as much heat and uses as much current as a CRT does

Just in case it comes to it, can anyone recommend another monitor that is similar to the 2408WFP in picture quality (and has low input lag)? I may never get a 2408WFP that doesn't have obvious flaws...

I just talked to dell and they will be sending me another monitor. Will be here tuesday. Not bad for a 15 minute for call.

I went ahead and bought one of the 2408wfp's from dell, refurbished. It came surprisingly fast. I got it hooked up and noticed that the blues are a bit strong and there is a color shift from left to right. I only used it one day, but going to look at it closer today after work.

I needed this monitor for photo editing so accurate colors are the most important. Still waiting for my monitor calibrator to come in though.

Has anyone received a 2408wfp recently without this uneven color gradient??

I have the A00 2408WFP and it does not have an uneven color gradient.

I received the A01

I ordered (and received) a refurbished 2408wfp and it's also (at least been updated to) an A01. I say "updated" because on the refurbished, I noticed the A01 indicator is a sticker on top of a sticker and the 2408wfp I have at work (which was ordered brand new) only has one single sticker that says A01. So perhaps they're doing some sort of update on the refurbs or something.

With the 15% off Outlet prices coupon + a $100 gift card I bought on eBay for $70, the out the door price on this was $380ish--which seems like a pretty good deal to me.

Will have to read up to see how I can find out if I received a good specimen. Like others I ordered a color calibrator to test the monitor with that's being delivered more slowly than the monitor took to get here.

No dead pixels, though.

The new HP LP2475w:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1326971&highlight=2408wfp
...is the monitor I seriously considered against the 2408WFP. It's $650ish new--about the same as the 2408WFP (new) if you don't have cool coupons and discounts to apply (which would make the 2408WFP less).

If I had been buying new it would have been a hard choice between that and the 2408WFP for me.

Beyond that it seemed like there wasn't much to consider under $800 (Planar, DoubleSight) and I figured if I was going to spend that much I might as well buy the NEC for $1,100 and know I was going to get the best thing out there.

Being able to get the 2408WFP refurbished for under $400 using coupons and other discounts made me want to at least try to see if the least expensive viable option would suit my needs. We'll see.

The first exchange I did they sent me a refurb A01. I believe they do exchanges based on model number, so I guess in theory any time I exchange it I should always be receiving A01.
Well I now retract this statement...exchange #2 arrived today and it's revision A00 (refurbished). I took it out of the box just to test to see if it had the same brightness/color issues as the A01 I currently have (no intentions of keeping it since it's the older revision), and it turns out the panel physically has long scratches on it that don't come out. I guess Dell doesn't put much evaluation into what qualifies as a refurb!

So, I think I'm going to try exchanging it one more time but unfortunately my patience is wearing thin. I may just sell the one I have at a loss. This is just getting ridiculous...first time I've been dissatisfied with a Dell product.

That HP LP2475w is a S-IPS monitor isnt it? For an extra $100 I should of just got that. The new monitor comes in tomorrow so I will compare and see which one I will actually keep. The blue tint seems to have gone away over the weekend.

The refurb 2408wfp I received is flawless. No scratches anywhere, Tons of cables that are still wrapped up, and no dead pixels. Hope the next one comes the same way.

Im planning on getting the pantone huey pro to calibrate my monitor. Any tips/suggestions? I use adobe lightroom 90% of the time and ps rarely.

Love my old 2407wfp (nonHC)... it's been the perfect monitor for like 2 years now. I think it's really funny how companies like Dell somehow manage to take 1 step forward and 2 steps back with each product they make. The 2407wfp was a completely awesome monitor, the HC introduced a bunch of BS, and now the 2408 model is well, inferior.

Guys, just buy a new 2407wfp off ebay or wherever.

That's ridiculous. There was a panel lottery on that one; you'd have no idea what you were getting. At least you can keep returning the new ones.

Arrived today like 3 days early - it's got the A01 sticker on the back. This thing looks so much bigger than the Apple 23" I had.

I'll let you guys know how it goes...

No noticeable input lag for me (I don't game) but there is unevenness or bleeding from the backlight. The left edge (and more on the bottom left) is a bit brighter and really noticable on grey and green backgrounds. Should I return it? I had a similar problem with the Apple 23" IPS. Are monitors normally a crap shoot like this?

i would say that's more than a bit, friend ;)

a semi-related request: does anybody know what the input lag is on the 2004FPW? i don't have a CRT and if i knew what the input lag was on this thing then that might help my decision with current monitors.

I don't have a CRT to test against so I tested against my laptop (vaio sz). The dell was around 20ms slower.

Can anyone anticipate price drops on this monitor based on Dell's history? I am very close to buying it, and my current monitor is slowly breaking more and more, so i don't know how much longer I can hold out. But I don't want to buy and then see it go down by $200 in a few weeks.

Thanks

I don't think you have anything to worry about. The price of this monitor (and it's predecessor the 2407WFP) has remained fairly constant over the years, and if my memory servers me correctly...actually went up as time went on.

i email a sales rep asking him what firmware the 2408 had before i buy and thats what he reply.

Email:

Confirmed, it is the best gaming monitor we have. And it has been updated to Rev. A03 2408WFP.
Thank you
James

think he mistaken the 2704 with the 2408?

so I got my two dell 2408's and I am running it to a mac pro which is running a 2600 radeon card with two dvi ports.

So the 2408 has two dvi ports. So do I need another card so each card is connected to a screen or can one port per screen be used and work properly?

Also right now both screens work but the menu for setting up this tower comes up on one screen and it looks all grainy and flashy(like the pixels are flickering).

Any clues guys?

Firstly Hi Guys!...(its my first post :D)

I recently got this monitor and have a few questions i just want to clarify

First Q is about the pixel mapping feature. Basically i connected my PS3 to it (via HDMI and also tried DVI) and switched the picture output to 1:1 (the pixel mapping option). Now on the PS3's XMB (main menu) i got the black bars which i knew i would get. Now i loaded up a few demo's to test the screen out and when i did the game started and it was like a small box within the screen with massive black borders around it. This was the same for some of my other Demos/games which i found out run at 720p. It did make sense to me as to why it was like this but then also tried 720p video but that does not bring up massive borders or make the screen the size it did with the games. Instead it just has the black bars on the top and bottom. So my Q is whehther it is ment to be like this. Sorry but this is pretty much my first monitor with all these funky features lol.

Another question is regarding input lag. Would input lag be more noticable when playing pc games as apposed to console games (like a PS3) ?

Also is there some type of test to see what firmware version you have? I ask because i was told i would get the latest version but judging by the A00 on the box that does not seem so :(

Thanks guys

I don't have this monitor, but my guesses would be that the video is being scaled up to fit the screen by the device that's outputting it, and the input lag would be the same either way, but the less precise controls on a console may possibly make it less apparent?

well im thinkin about orderin a refurb of this monitor...

anyone who has ordered in the last month still have problems? this monitor has everything im looking for but i really dont have the time or money to play the lottery.

I am wondering about the refurbs as well, is the $200 or so worth it or is there a high chance of getting something that's really scuffed up with dead/stuck pixels?

Just received my 2408WFP A01 from Dell today.

I'm coming from a 2007WFP... I can say it's a HUGE change!

Also, the input lag is still there, I can feel it when I move the mouse... this is DEFINITELY not recommended for FPS shooting games, and other activities on the computer that require precision and fast response times.

Hopefully a DVI -> HDMI cable will solve this when I receive that.

And the colour reproduction is just too off... can't afford a colorimeter, but I can definitely notice the wide gamut having an effect... the greens are too green.Ugh! I knew I couldn't get used to another type of panel... S-IPS is just too good :D

Put the screen to aspect mode. PS3 has XMB at 1080p, but most games are 720p. Notable exceptions are two games I KNOW run at 1080p too > Metal Gear Solid and GT5 Prologue.

Otherwise set it to "aspect" (as opposed to 1:1) and you will get 1:1 mapping of 1080p content and proper up-scaling of 720p stuff. 1:1 of 720p means exactly 1280 pixels wide by 720 pixels high of an image on a monitor with 1920x1200 resolution. This equals a pretty small image as you've found out.

You have to be pretty sensitive to notice input lag on a console. It's there, but harder to notice. On a PC it's pretty noticeable.

If you received an A00 I would give them hell and return it. At least minimize the lag if you can by getting the slightly lower input lag version > A01.

Good luck.

Hi, I've glanced through the thread and I might've missed it-

Is it possible to use a DVI - HDMI converter to bypass the input lag problems for gaming? (ie, run from my pc (DVI out) to the monitor's HDMI input)

Thanks,
R

I had the 2408WFP-A01 for about a month and didn't notice any difference in terms of lag between DVI and HDMI ports. There was a difference in color mode setting, DVI would not hold if set to "video" kept resetting to "graphics" which is why I shifted to using the HDMI port.

BTW, lag is noticeable just moving though windows in XP. Didn't notice it until I switched monitors and was amazed how much faster my system appeared. You can simulate it by changing registry setting to add say 30ms (I assume a comparable lcd monitor would add 20ms, so only 30ms more to simulate the difference if you are already using an LCD) to window drop downs or fades/slides.

Also I don't see the hype with PVA monitors, all you do is trade image brightness shifting for color shifting with a little brightness shift. Either go cheap with a TN or go all in with an IPS monitor. You can get the 24" HP IPS for not that much more than the "deal" listed in this thread, worth it IMHO.

good luck.

I've already got a 2408- I was hoping to be able to game on it though. Oh well- I guess I'll keep using my 20" instead.

I've seen people complaining about their HP 2475W being laggy.

Well, coming from the 2408wfp to the HP 2475W, the HP has much less lag. I followed the thread here on the HP for awhile and after owning one I'd say a lot of negative stuff said is total BS. I remember a lot of talk about the fonts and that the pixel layout was really vertical RGB which isn't supported in windows. Total bull. I boot up Ubuntu livecd and changed to different pixel orientations horizontal, vertical RBG BGR. It's straight RGB and cleartype works great, fonts look grreat. I believe a lot of what you might read are just a fictional accounts.

I just read a review of LP2475W on prad and it indeed has lag. It was recorded between 11 to 54ms and avg. of 32ms, equivalent to almost 2 fps. Not really noticeable in everyday use as it will only appear to be noticeable in some games.

http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/review/2008/review-hp-lp2475w-part14.html#Lag

Unfortunately, they don't have a review of 2408wfp so I can't compare them, but I think all monitors with multimedia interfaces have lag.

How much lag is there compared to the 2405? I have a 2405 but am looking to upgrade to two new either 2408, the HPs or just one NEC at this time. I game with the 2405 and haven't had any problems. My eyes are not that sensitive to the monitors I guess. Thanks.

Never said the HP had no lag, just much less (i.e. noticeable) than the Dell. All LCDs have some lag, some more than others and the HP is a one of those that has a lot even the latest A01 version which I had.

try lcd24-7.info for a collection of reviews and news on 24" lcd screens. Plenty of reviews on both.
