Wow! I wonder how many people will be in line at 8a trying to get one of those (minimum of) 10 laptops? Walmart is usually crazy even without good sales. lol

15.4" LCD
Intel Celeron Processor 575 (2GHz, 667MHz FSB, 1MB L2, 65nm, Core 2-based) http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLB6M.html
2GB
160GB HDD
DVD/RW
6-cell battery
Vista Home Basic

It's a better laptop than I expected (some VIA C7 junk with a 3 cell battery). :p

edit: beaten above. Looks like a pretty decent GM40 based (Montevina-light) laptop.

Newer celery's are getting better and better though...it's still no C2D, but not nearly as much to be ashamed about as a few years back.
It's a single core version of Merom (actually it is a Merom with 1/2 the cache and one core disabled). The FSB isn't crippled and the clock speed is relatively high. It's not dual core, but the laptop should allow a dual core CPU upgrade. For $300, it's an incredible deal.

It may not be dual core but it beats the hell out of a netbook for the price.

Definitely going to have my bud swing by wally-world Saturday to pick that up. Since he will be doing mainly College MS Office-type work and web surfing, he'll be set with this. That beats the cheapest refurb Dell I could find at the DFO site the other day.

For $300 I think it'd be good for XP or linux. Even with the 1mb of L2 cache and 2GBs of memory I think it'd probably choke a little in Vista.

Could I drop my T5550 into this thing and then upgrade my Gatway to a T9xxx proc? Shopping for grandparent and they don't need much, but I hate to leave them with celery.

hows that celeron compare to intel atoms in a netbook? should be fast right?

Tempting. Not that I need a notebook, but if this isn't advertised via circulation, I may just bite.

My thoughts exactly. And pardon my ignorance of laptops, but I thought laptop cpu's were soldered to the mobo. Are they now upgradeable like a desktop?

Laptop CPUs have been socketed for a very long time. Some models have the CPUs soldered (more true in smaller form factors than in 14.1" and above), but those are more of an exception than the rule.

The reason isn't exactly so the user can upgrade, since it still generally requires a fair amout of disassembly, but because the base unit is shared across many models configured with different CPUs, memory, hard drives, etc. For example, the CQ50 base in this deal's laptop is used in many different CPU configurations. If you don't mind disassembling your laptop, you can generally upgrade the CPU if you wish.

This Celeron M 575 will kill the Atom by a mile. Atom netbooks are a lot smaller and lighter though and some have significantly longer battery life. It's a trade off.

The big lots deal last week was better, but for this price, it's hard to argue the component choices in a laptop.

Anyone who considers a netbook over this because of the cpu is insane! Its got a 15" screen!!! A real keyboard!!!

If I lived in the states, I would be lining up yesterday - cpu be damned.

For $300.00 thats a hell of a deal .
don't sell the new Celerons short, they are some very capable CPU's.

The Celeron has always been a good CPU on the mobile side. Previously, the Celeron was = to a Pentium-M but without the Speedstep stuff.

Celeron, Oh GOD :(

There's really nothing wrong with Celerons. The reason they got such a bad name was because people compared a 1.4ghz Cel to a 2.16ghz PM. A 2.00ghz Celeron will be plenty of power for the type of person who wants a Compaq product of any kind... The Celerons use a bit more power than the Centrino platform units did, but you can't have your cake and eat it too for only $298 with 2gb/160gb etc.

it's a stalk of celery in there

I have a Celeron 430 in this extra PC I'm building for my Wife - no it's not a laptop version, it's the desktop CPU. It's a single core "Core" technology processor, however. Just for shits and giggles I ran some Everest benchmarks on it yesterday, and with the DDR2 533 RAM at 3-3-3-9 in it (it's DDR2 800 but the board only supports 667, and to run it at as close to 1:1 as I can I dropped it to 533), this little "stalk of celery" is faster than a Pentium 4 EE at 3.8 GHz with 4x the L2 cache on a faster front side bus and RAM running at DDR2 800 5-5-5-12.

Go figure. In fact, this little "stalk of celery" is the fastest single core processor across the board in the comparison against all the CPUs in the Everest database (v4.60.1547). That Celeron 575 in the laptop is more powerful and has twice the L2 than my Celeron 430, so it can damned sure pull some weight.

Celerons aren't bad processors, they get the job done just fine. It might not be a proper Core 2 Duo, but it's basically a Core Solo and for $300, it's a steal...

I have a 430 running in a media server box at home....cruising along nicely at 3.0..
not only are they great chips, they overclock like mad.:)

i have a celeron 430 as well. only have it at 2.2ghz because the motherboard is flaky needs more juice for me to use it daily but its fine for my mom.

I talked with the Electronics Manager at my local store and he told me they have about 60 units available. He said last year they only had 10. You have to ask at the counter for it and Sat they are going to be advertising it in store on the pa system.
I plan on getting there about 0600.

fantastic deal. chipset should support at least the new pentium dc's -- t3200, which is also 667fsb. cache isn't that crippling on meroms. I'm chugging along just fine on a pdc t2370 (13x133=1733 1mb l2 dualcore).

Is t5500 socket m or p? This will take socket p's. Historically, 667fsbs were socket m, and 200/266 and 133 pdc/celerons were socket p. But now with the newgen parts, 667 is back with socket p.

That said, I haven't looked into just how crippled the gm40 is, but if it supports 266fsb, you could throw in some real high end cpu's.

Question: gm40 vs say x3100 (gl960), how much better? I'm not into new games, but the x3100 gl960 was already fairly close to being able to play cs:s. If the gm40 can handle it marginally well, I'd be all sold!

Don't get me wrong I'm certain that for the right person that processor is plenty fine. In fact I used to have one of the old 300As oced to 450. :)

I'm just a picky bitch as it were. That and I have a jolly idea of a "stalk of celery" on ones computer with the added bonus of peanut butter thermal paste just makes me feel giddy :D

i beg to differ. my dell 1501 is less powerful then this laptop especially with its 1gb of ram, however if i keep the multitasking to a minimum i have no problems running vista at all. in fact ive been running it like this for a year now and still haven't been compelled to spend the $30 to make it 2gb as it should be...

Should stop fkin' comparing this to a netbook - totally different audiences. It's a good price, but I'll stick with my 10 incher that doesn't break my back or even feels like it's there for that matter. A 15.4" is suitable for those who have it on a desk mostly and not moving around.
