Front page of the [H], top right text was changed from 'Juck Fack' to 'I smell i7 in the air'.

They must be playing with one right now so the article should be up soonish I guess.

I hope this is a hint at i7 being around the corner. I can't wait for this platform.

from what I've read, i7 won't be as good for gaming as current CPU's, at least not at first. If that turns out to be true, I'm staying away for a while.

I don't think I'll make the switch anytime soon, but still nice to see what it can do

I would've thought it would be the ridiculously inflated launch prices.

Yeah, I'm seeing it on the main page, too.

*sends Sirk1000 to get his/her eyes checked*

that is what was originally said but now they are saying i7 has "upto" %52 more performance the a q9 series.....

I really wish that people would stop saying this crap... The drivers aren't optimized for i7 yet, so let's wait until ATI/nVidia (and everyone else) come out with drivers which include proper support before saying that. ANY new platform needs proper support before it can be fully utilized.

Calm down, it's just what I've heard. I'm not going to ignore what I've heard and "hope for the best" while plunking down my cash. If it turns out that what I've heard isn't true at all, then great. But until I see the comparisons from real i7 systems, I'm taking the old "wait and see" approach.

You're not going to be able to control what people can and can't discuss here, so try not to get upset when someone says something you either just plain don't like, or don't agree with.

Is that for gaming, or general performance? For some reason, what I heard was the platform did exceptionally well in general performance (benchmarking was mentioned specifically, I think), but the performance in gaming was slightly worse.

I doubt it was gaming. Usually those kind of gains are seen in things like video encoding as games tend to be strongly GPU limited.

Here is the direct quote from Expreview: http://en.expreview.com/2008/10/06/intel-core-i7-965-50-more-performance-than-qx9770.html#more-1008

According to some reviewers who had their hands on the upcoming Bloomfield, the new CPU runs great. But how huge improvement it is compared to today’s top dog?

In a recent document sent to partners, Intel pointed out that when comparing Core i7-965 with QX9770, we can get 52% more 3D gaming performance, 38% more rendering performance and 41% more movie editing and conversion performance. (Core i7-965 platform: X58, DDR3 3G, Discrete VGA card, QX9770 platform unknown.)

Yes, the numbers are quite vague, but it is directly coming from Intel. Compared to a more expensive product, we can’t expect more. (QX9770>1450USD, Core i7-965=999USD)

I'm calling BS on that 52% figure, only in the most heavily multi-threaded games like FSX will we see anywhere near 50% gains over an equivalently clocked Yorkfield. Apparently the 52% figure was taken from 3DMark Vantage, which scales impressively with extra cores, but is not really indicative of real world gaming performance.

i dont beleive the %52 all around, i am sure it was for highly optimized intel code, or massive server backends which scale well with more cores and such.

Anything that scales with cores are going to see huge gains on i7. Thats not exactly news. Properly multithreaded games included. 1 and 2 threaded games arent going to see a big improvement. Nehalem is first and foremost improvements for multithreaded applications. QPI, SMT, IMC are all the evidence needed for that.

Im still wanting to see the time required for access to each level of cache, since that is going to determine how effective the choice of moving shared cache from L2->L3 is going to be.

Who said I was 'upset'? Mildly annoyed, yes, hopping mad, no.

meh, seems like nehe won't be a must until dx11 games are out. Fun for non-gaming stuff though.

i7's will perform as good as current high end Intel chips or better. There really is no reason to think it won't perform as well.

not trying to ruin this thread.. but why are people getting excited about a cpu, arent't hey fast enough???? get excited about the fusion IO drive people, that will actually make your computer alot quicker!!!!!

a 4ghz dual core doesnt make a single difference in gaming either and u know why? BECAUSE GAMES OUT NOW ARE GPU DEPENDANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if u think that a NEW CPU wil all of a sudden make crysis PLAYABALE then your having a laugh:D:D:D:D

It's different technology, that's reason enough to wonder if it will perform as well. It's not like they just took current technology and did a couple of tweaks to make it a little bit better. This is completely different than the Core 2 series. It's completely different than any of their previous technologies, as far as I know.

"Newer is better".... definitely not always true.

This is completely besides the point, but it actually does make a difference, compared to slower CPU's. Not much, but there is a difference.

if u think that a NEW CPU wil all of a sudden make crysis PLAYABALE then your having a laugh:D:D:D:D

Apparently, you completely missed the point of my post.

I think we all know that you don't need fancy quadcores for most games...
But should that stop Intel and others from developing faster CPUs? I don't think so.

Sounds like someone isn't living up to the 2[H]4U :p

i'm all cool with new CPUs... but i dont excited for them.. Graphics cards, sure.. they make a world of a difference in gaming... going from a quad core 3.0ghz to a quad core 4.0ghz.. i probably wont really notice... put in a crazy hard drive like the fusion io, where i could copy 4x8GB files into itself in like 3 minutes, thats something you can use to multitask

Dont forget that x58 will support both crossfire AND sli, this is a big plus to many. Also, new toys are new toys reguardless of the "Facts"

*shrug* I kind of equate it to overclocking, no one needs to do it, it's just fun to have/do. I think forums like these consist of people who like new stuff regardless of whether the performance increases will translate into much of anything in the real world.

new shiny toys for me.
