24" Widescreen CRT (FW900) From Ebay arrived,Comments.

I just picked up one of these, HP style. This thing is BIG. It took a long time to get the settings right, my brightness is at 16 right now. Now I have to look back though this thread for any tip and tricks there are for this big ol CRT.

That sounds very low for the brightness setting, you may have the beginnings of the G2 problem.

Both of my GDM-F520s give very good black levels at brightness of 40. During mid-day I'll sometimes need to bump this to 45. Contrast is around 70-75, and the display is calibrated and profiled using a Monaco/X-Rite Optix XR DTP-94 colorimeter. I've used RGB bias and gain as required to obtain perfect 6500K color temp through the full grey scale so they aren't at 100.

From my experience, brightness even at 20 would cause significant black crush on my displays and even before I ran calibrated I never needed to go that low. Brightness of 0, in particular, would directly indicate a G2 problem, IMO.

increasing your brightness gives you a better black level? do i get that right?
when i run the beforementioned settings, which gives me best colours while still being able to read text, the black levels are still not as good as i would want them to be. meaning i would lower the brightness even more if i could.
you say that is a "G2 problem"? will i be able to fix that via windas?

I calibrated my monitor as best I could between Digital Video Essentials and a few freebie tools.

I'm at 32 brightness, 85 contrast and had it there for the past year or so.

NO, I'm saying that black is black at 40 brightness, which is far higher than 0.

Yes, G2 is fixed by Windas.

Everyone is different, but I find contrasts as high as that a little "hot" and you start to lose sharpness and resolution. YMMV.

Hey guys, I have lowered my G2 value to 110 which is the lowest you can go. however I still think that the screen is still too bright. can anyone suggest me doing both resistor /windas mod? thanks

So how the hell does one get a windas cable these days? It's very hard to search this thread...

when I had my 2000 November, there were 2 pots also, and mine was probably one of the earliest builds.

This is the very good tutorial site: http://www.geocities.com/gregua/windas/
I'm thinking about using WinDAS, too, but I'm not much of an electrician.
Now I found out that on the opposite site of the power connector there is a cover with the 4-pin TTL behind it. So for using WinDAS it's not necessary to remove the whole bezel, right?

Here are a number of TTL-RS232 Converters on ebay.de
http://shop.ebay.de/?_nkw=TTL+RS232&_sacat=See-All-Categories 5V should be the right thing. After all I'm still too uncertain. So, DreiZweiEinsNull if you manage to use WinDAS somehow, please contact me ;)

Hi All. :)

All I can say is coming from a minted 22" (20" Viewable) 4:3 Mitsubishi SB230 (which I love) is this is a very nice screen esp as now I see far more than a square box can show me.

I am messing about still, not done any hardcore adjustments but its great as it is, 2003 week 18 model, Mint Case/Mint Screen/Scuffs on Front Bezel (I'm getting brand new bezel to replace it).

With my Desktop at 1280x960 or above on the Mitsubishi I could not read text on and got a sore head so I ran Desktop at 1152x864.

I can read text at 1920x1200 with no strain on this Sony, but have set desktop to 1600x1000@100hz

Downside is (and I knew for reading before I bought it) is the heat up time on Trinitrons, I know all CRT ain't 100% till 30mins or so but this is horrid at cold so not sure what to do about my 20mins Windows sleep mode for monitor.

I may simply use blank (black) screen saver instead.

I'm typing this after being way for 1 hour and just woke up monitor and its washed out looking LOL.

Once it heat up you ain't seen quality like it esp after running the built in Restoration Tool.

Just watched QT Madagascar 2 1080p Trailer on it @ 100HZ.

P.S, no matter how many pictures you look at on the Web of this monitor, it does not look same in the flesh.

It is really wide and has a very flat rectangular screen/bezel, the photos make it look like it has a curved squarish screen/bezel.

yeah the warm up times is a bish....when I was first using mine (21" 4:3) my first reaction was always WTF happened.

MY Mitsubishi 19" and 22" look fine at cold start (I know they wont be optimal though for 30mins at least).

This is a bummer as when I leave PC or watch a movie using TV-Out the screen goes auto off (I don't use screen savers, simply 20mins to standby).

Its a good few mins before it looks even normal (5mins or so).

replacing the sony with the sgi but using both atm :D

the sony takes a good 20min (the first 2min are abit fuzzy) to warm up to true color now so i have been leaving it on 24/7 which isnt ideal for power. and the black level is slowly fading, im at 0 brightness now and it looks like a LCD black level..

the new sgi i got off craigs list for cheap its really good, warms up FAST and pitch blacks at 50% brightness.. im very happy.

thought i would take a pic while i had both of them setup :D

Neat set up.

(You managed to get a new one at this point? Cool...)

I am probably going to bite the bullet in 6 months on either the FW900 or something like a Samsung 275T+ (27" LCD). I am not seeing any real benefit to go to a 24" LCD over this CRT...I have plenty of desk real estate and great a/c.

I just worry about non-native resolutions.

every resolution is native on CRT ;)

if my FW900 dies I will buy another immediately.

well that's the problem, getting a replacement in good shape immediately.

My 21" took almost a half dozen shipments to get it here 'right'. I paid a premium even.

Forgive me if I don't want to skim through 100+ pages of this thread, but I don't know much about displays and have a question about this monitor, as I'm thinking about picking one up. I have a 22" Dell 4:3 CRT right now and I run it at 1280x960 for surfing and gaming because I only have a 9600GT and this low resolution allows me to crank up the eye candy in games.

So would this strategy work with the FW900, too? What's the lowest resolution you'd be comfortable with gaming/surfing with this monitor? What's the 1280x960 equivalent for the 16:10 resolution of the FW900? I might get a hand-me-down 8800GT in a couple months, but I really don't want to have to buy a new $300 card to run some crazy resolution on a CRT.

Your GPU is modern so you could use a higher RES for surfing (but not gaming).

Example, I had a Mitsubishi 22" (20" Viewable) SB230 and I got eye strain and sore head with desktop and Web at 1280x960 (text/Fonts too small) so I had move down 1 notch to 1152x864 and it was fine, Gamed at 1920x1440.

I now with this Sony can easily surf the Web and read no problems at 1600x1000, 1920x1200 even but I opted for former.

I will game at 1680x1050 and 1920x1200.

You also are very lazy as you could not have even read the 1st page. :p

Aspect Ratio and Resolutions
The monitor is 16:10 aspect ratio. The following resolutions are 16:10:

1280x800
1600x1000
1680x1050
1760x1100
1840x1150
1920x1200
2048x1280
2304x1440 (Max resolution listed in the FW900 product datasheet)

also if one was dropping this much cash on a display, spending another $100 on a 8800/9800GT would be a no-brainer as a minimum card.

I looked through the first page and I know the 16:10 resolutions, I'm more interested in your personal experience with the monitor. I can't really tell the difference gaming above 1280x960 with this Dell, so maybe 1440x900 would look alright with the FW900?

I'll end up with an 8800GT either way, I'd just rather spend the $100 to pay some bills.

I have a major issue....I think my red gun might be dead on my HP A7217A! Where ever red is supposed to be, it's just black! I tried to calibrate using a Huey calibrator, and it does nothing. I tried using the expert mode in the monitor's adjustments, and changing the red bias and gain do nothing! Any suggestions? Would Windas even have a chance? God would it suck to have to junk this monitor!

Update: Nevermind! I'm an idiot and didn't check the cable! It was backed out a bit, so all I had to do was push it all the way back in and I'm back in business!

Now thats gota hurt! You would'nt happen to live in Michigan would you?? cause theres one on craigslist.

ALWAYS CHECK THE PHYSICAL LAYER FIRST :)

working on CCNA :)

Usually a gun going out is a total discoloration to everything.

Bump!

I had a scare yesterday with my FW900 popping with a sound like an antique camera flash, and the image being smeared and out of focus for a few separate moments, after booting up for the first time of the day. It hasn't happened again, so far.

I immediately started looking up information on the current state of LCD displays for a possible replacement. I like what I've read about the highend NEC LCDs.

Other people have commented on experiencing similar problems that have simply disappeared, so hopefully my monitor will continue to operate normally. I really lucked out in finding this mint FW900 locally (Toronto area) last year.

Revisiting this thread, I also want to address this recent comment:

Aspect Ratio and Resolutions
The monitor is 16:10 aspect ratio. The following resolutions are 16:10:

1280x800
1600x1000
1680x1050
1760x1100
1840x1150
1920x1200
2048x1280
2304x1440 (Max resolution listed in the FW900 product datasheet)

For the obsessive, perfectionist types, the FW900 has an aspect ratio of 1.5642, not 1.6, so 1.6 AR resolutions will be slightly vertically stretched in a maxed-out display area. I run my monitor with a reduced vertical image size to compensate and show 16:10 resolutions properly. This topic was discussed previously in this thread.

For some games, a preferable resolution would be 1600x1024, with an AR of 1.5625 to closely match the maximum viewable area on the FW900. ;)

Correct, when using 16:10 resolutions you should not completely fill the viewable vertical area, I have found that about a quarter inch of free space at the top and bottom gives the best 16:10 result.

1600x1000 is also a legit resolution if you add it and I use it as my main, text is a a little larger than 1680x1050 and you can use 100hz without stressing the screen as much.
