So I was at the apple store a few days ago and i listened to music on one of the headphones they had there, I think it was called beats by dr.dre or something, and it was amazing! So i was thinking, if I wanna get a pair of headphones for music too, should i go for these?

the beats sounded like i were in a big hall, it was amazing, do any of the headphones that you mentioned in that thread have that effect?

I think those Beats are a version of another mainstream headphone. That costs way less. Look at the head-fi thread. They do not suck but...

do you know any other headphones that sounds like you're in a concert hall?

they cost way too much. while the sound is clear and the bass isn't overly boomy as some people were anticipating, it doesn't make sense for it to be $350 in terms of sound quality.

In terms of closed phones, I've heard good things about the Audiotechnica ATH-700s. They are $165ish.

people are making comparisons to the Denon D2000:

I own both the ATH-A700's and the AH-D2000's. While the ATH's are good phones, the Denons own the hell out of them. Worth the extra $100? Subjective, but the D2000 have much better instrument separation (more then 4/5 instruments muddle together and loose detail on the ATH's), MUCH better bass extension, and less shrill highs.

I would say the sound signature is similar, which is cool as I love my ATH-A700's, but the D2000's are better in every way.

Oh the D2000s are better than the 700s. The D2000 had some loose screw issues with their first shipments but all is well now. I would not pay new retail for them though. I always buy used when I can.

I grabbed them from buy.com for $192 shipped.

Now I just need to stop visiting head-fi and let my poor wallet recover. It's an evil site, I now find myself looking at portable IEM's and amps, re-cable options, mod options, etc.

I actually skipped a video card upgrade for new cans and an amp.....never thought THAT would happen.

192? that isn't bad. they are worth that new. I thought they were $350 suggested retail?

do the D2000 sound like you're in a hall, like surround sound?

Sure they do. Most good headphones do. Grados not so much but Koss Sb40 is the starter can, Beyer 880, Akg 501, 601,701, Senn 600, 650, AT 500, 700, 900 etc, Ultrasone, etc yada yada

Hence my efforts to get folks to try real headphones.

Oh and the Ultrasone Edition 9s have some of the deepest bass ever.

the best headphones, imo, are Stax. totally different from dynamic cans though.

Welcome to the Jungle little bunny! Sorry about your wallet.

hahaha i feel sorry too :D

so if i go for the D2000, do i need an amp/dac or soundcard or whatever?

It would help to use an amp but they run ok with just a sound card. Something like a Zero dac/amp is a good, entry level buy.

These headphones are GOD:eek:

The beats are what? $300? Not worth it imo. See this head-fi thread for more info.

Specifically, this post:

do the D2000 sound like you're in a hall, like surround sound?

This is (roughly) what people mean when they talk about "soundstage" or "imaging."

DT770s are certainly nice, and velour never hurts. I don't think they rival D2000s, though?

770s are not good in the midrange, their bass is bloated and farty sounding, highs are too bright---compared to the D2000 and most other headphones priced b/w $100-300.

I like Deep Cup Open Darth Beyers but that is $5-700 a pair USED.

Beyer Velour is very cush though.

why are batteries bad?

Short version, because it's hard to supply competitive amounts of power without making the headset heavy enough to cause spinal damage.

Long version is fun and involves lots of physics and some chemistry. But it still boils down to good audio needing a good power supply. Portables pit a few AA electrochemical cells against a nuclear plant, it's not fair. And even a few AAs will make the headset much heavier, and they have to go somewhere which can impose design limits...you can do decent cordless audio or decent active noise-canceling audio (the two reasons it would have batteries), but in each case it simply cannot compete with equal cost solutions of the more traditional cable-powered variety (also note that noise-canceling acts by creating an equal and opposite noise...it can be very good if you have a constant high background that needs canceling, but it necessarily gives lower quality audio).

Better to get a good portable like the cowan D2 or an ibasso dac/amp than use batteries. Stupid to power them that way. I would prefer they made a separate pack for such things.

"The" one...once we start getting into that price range, there are an number of serious options. A very good one, definitely.

another stupid question, i can just unplug my speaker and plug these d2000s into the same slot right?

In your sound card? Yeah. That will work ok. You want to upgrade that eventually though. Still, it will own whatever you had previously as is.

i don't have a soundcard, just my motherboard

I don't have any headphones atm, i just got the swan d1080mkii :D

Too soon? :D

Physics being what it is, in a comparison between equal qualities of headphones and speakers...the headphones will almost always trash the speakers. The D2000s are pretty firmly a cut above the Swans to start with...

ahhh hehe that's alright, i still need my speakers when im painting, for background music. The headphones will be for when i really want to listen to the music :D

as for upgrade, im thinking about the ZERO DAC, any opinions?

Zero's great for the price. You can get better if you want to spend more. The toggle for speaker mode / headphone mode is helpful.

The D2000s are traditionally an "amp recommended" headphone, so it should improve them significantly beyond what you get just hooking it straight into your computer.

Really WIDE sound stage but not as much vertical or 3D as the AKG 601, 701.

The 880s are also on the bright side and not much bass but still pretty solid and comfortable. For gaming I would go akg 601/701 or AT 700/900 over beyer anything. Some people swear by the 880 but I doubt they have heard as many cans as I have.

Of course, Stax owns everything.

i don't game, so is d2000 better?

edit: well i do game a bit, but these phones aren't for games :p

Probably. Just get 'em from somewhere that takes returns if you're not sure. ;)

yeah hehe, i'm trying to get from buy.com for $200, but they're out of stock right now, do you guys know if they take returns?
