The world's largest particle collider successfully completed its first major test without incident. The world as we know it didn’t end. No explosions. No black holes opened on the surface of the planet and no aliens popped out. Damn.

After a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen at 10:36 a.m. (0836 GMT) indicating that the protons had traveled the full length of the US$3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider. "There it is," project leader Lyn Evans said when the beam completed its lap.

Well... It's a good thing they didn't open a black hole on your Birthday then  Happy b-day... it was almost dooms-day...

There was no collision planned for this test, so that is why we are still alive. :D
This test was just a single beam of protons moving clockwise. Soon they'll test a single beam counter-clockwise, and later they'll test 2 beams going in opposite direction.

is it me or when you first glance at an article about the particle collider the name Hadron stands out?? To me it seems as if its called the "Hardon Particle Collider"... lol

Oh so basically they're cockteasing us with the doomsday scenario... nice.... I really hope fucking around with this shit ends up paying off.

I agree can someone explain to me how this is going to help out humanity??

I aint interested in todays test, but I cant wait til october.

October is when if something bad is gunna happen, it will happen then, as today was just a test run to see if if both beams can run the complete course in different directions but without the intersecting of the beams to crash the particles together.

But I doubt anything will happen then, I am more interested in what this new experiment can bring to the real world in terms of new technologies.

Roll on October :)

its supposed to help scientists understand why matter is bigger than anti-matter and how the universe was formed and also find different dimensions.

What that really means is people way smarter than us average joe's really wont get what they are going to benefit from turning it on.

Look at it this way in about 5 to 10 years when we see a floating car with a flux capacitor that can travel through time crazy scientist with wild white hair included....you can thank this machine :p

Man, I must say I'm quite dissapointed. I guess my dreams of an Resident Evil type thing wont happen.

The experiment results from the LHC *might* result in learning how to manipulate gravity. With that knowledge, the human race would have a HUGE jump in capability and technology.

Think of the possibilities for Travel, Weapons Tech.. Etc.. Its amazing!

Not if the oil companies have anything to say about it!!

How does the Hubble help humanity? It's helping explain the unknown and how things ultimately work in this crazy place...and maybe society gets a tangible benefit from it...

You know.. back in the early part of the 20th century, Horses were the main mode of transportation. The “Horse Industry”, (Breeders, Farms, Feed, Carriage Makers.. etc) lobbied hard against the Auto industry and the construction of roads. They tried everything to block automobiles from being widely accepted. Some laws included Firing a gun in the air 3 times at every intersection, to warn people on horseback that a car was in the area.. to … get this.. Forcing you to hide and cover your car on the side of a road when a person on horseback approached, so your automobile wouldn’t ‘scare’ the horse..
But.. Once the floodgate of a better technology come out, its hard to stop the flow.. No matter how big you are.

Last night there was a show on the History channel about this thing. Pretty interesting stuff. They have quite the server farm (100,000+ processors) to process all the data it will collect. I can smell another distributed computing project in the future to help sort through the PB of data they will collect.

I don't know how many if you are coast to coast am fans, but if you are, you should know the name Jonh Titor. To make a long story short, he claims to be a time traveller from the future.

THE BIRTH OF TIME TRAVEL ON THE HORIZON

Time travel could be possible in months
Wormholes expected in Switzerland when Large Hadron Collider goes live

Mathematicians Irina Aref'eva and Igor Volovich said that when the LHC begins to smash atoms into each other the conditions will be perfect to open a wormhole into the distant future.

"Proton-proton collisions at the LHC could lead to the formation of time machines (space-time regions with closed time-like curves) which violate causality," said the scientists in a research paper. "One model for the time machine is a traversable wormhole. We argue that the traversable wormhole production cross section at the LHC is of the same order as the cross section for black hole production."

The other possibility, according to the mathematicians, is that miniature black holes will be formed under the French and Swiss countryside.

This is so geeky cool...I wonder what they'll find....
Funny thing is, I'm reading a book called Blashpemy. It's about a fictional particle accelerator in Arizona and what they uncover. Good timing I guess.

sweet, now they need to start pumping out antimatter with that thing, hello clean energy!

funny thing is that there was actually a particle accelerator if i recall correctly in Texas, that was canceled, they dig the cavern and all, they even create a town! well it was suppose to be far far bigger than the LHC, what was the problem? budget! cuz the US wanted to build it on their own so...

That is a serious tin hat wearing site. I forgot to wear my tin hat before clicking into that link and realized that my brains were being sucked out and read.

The quack sites never end. I wonder how many idiots actually go to that site and buy the book. Stupid. However, there is something very powerful about sites that mix in truth (by way of real articles) and then the fake stuff (the time traveler part). I hope people understand how dangerous this kind of thing can be for the weak minded.

Someone mentioned wormholes.

O brother, you have no idea what your talking about...

From what I understand they only fired the beams, no collisions yet. The world will end once they start colliding the beams which sounds like it be a month from now.

indeed the fired the 2 beams in the two directions, there is gonna be some collisions before October 21st, i think the first real collision is gonna be on September 16th (i´ll have to get a confirmation on the date) but these collisions are gonna be at a much lower energy level, so no "blackhole" yet ;) :D

the real "Doomsday" collisions would be on October 21st!!!

I agree can someone explain to me how this is going to help out humanity??

The same way this forum or video games helps humanity maybe? Why does everything have to help humanity? Why can't we just research to answer questions and test theories so we can employ more ideas later on?

Black holes were mentioned.

O brother again, any gravitational well created would evaporate in well under a second.

Oh wait, here comes quantum mechanics, microscopic black holes pop into and out of exsistence all the time, their lives are very short...

Someone stop me.

Sure, you like using computers? Current computer technology wouldn't be possible without previous colliders to teach us about how matter acts on very small scales. We'd most likely still be using vacuum tubes without this kind of research, if those would have even been possible.

I agree can someone explain to me how this is going to help out humanity??

Not to mention that cosmic rays (which are actually just particles like those in the LHC) bombard our atmosphere constantly with higher energies than this machine is going to create, so if there were going to be a catastrophic black hole, it would have been made already.
