Do you remember the first time you tried out a new game everyone was talking about and you were blown away? You know, you say to yourself "Just five more minutes" and then you look away from your screen again and its 4 hours later and you realize that if you go to sleep right now you can get two hours of sleep before work/school/whatever? As soon as you quit playing you can't wait to get back and play some more.

Well, that's how I feel about GRID. This is the first game, I think since Doom, maybe HL (the original, not that spiffed up version that has to put some T&A in it to keep you interested), that I think about morning, noon, and nite. And you have to understand, Im a hardcore FPS player. This is the first racing game I have ever tried. You are cheating yourself if you don't go download the demo. Be warned, tho, I found it very difficult to control with a keyboard (and it really doesn't do the game justice either).

2nd warning: I thought Crysis was the only title out there that could make we want to get a 4870X2 (other than my desire to own the fastest card going), but GRID will push your card hard. Although I am unconvinced, the developers claim GRID is more demanding than Crysis.

Fucking I know..

I'm a hardcore FPS guy to.. I booted up GRID and i'm hooked. I played for a little bit on my Keyboard, but then I went out and got a wired 360 controller..

WIN!

I love the Japanese circuit, American next, Don't race Euro that much

I remember the days of Doom, good days indeed. Though I have always been a fan of FPS genre of games, I have never really been a fan of single player AI. When Quake 1 came out with the ability to play with a friend through dial up connections, I was dumbfounded. This was the first time I have ever even heard of the concept of playing a computer game with another person not located near you. I was hooked instantly, then HL1 came out and multi-player exploded from there.

So I don't derail the topic, yes I remember Doom but it never sucked me in quite like Quake and HL1 did.

Played Doom on SNES when I was little. Scared the shit out of me... I couldn't even get myself to look at the screen when I played. Ended up being afraid of most FPSs involving any type of monsters for a while.

i played doom first as the beta for PC. the one with no sound and the weird BFG, it was an awesome experience though

I first played Doom when I was 6 or 7. It literally scared the living **** out of me. My heart was racing, I was shaking the entire time, but I loved every minute of it.

I first played DOOM on my Sega 32x, it came in the box with the system (32-bit addon). Dad wouldn't have let me buy it otherwise...

Definitely kept me up late a few nights. I can still hum the music :)

Such truth. That was the only game I had to keep hidden from my parents, but then my dad found it and ended up playing it all the time :p

GRID is really that good? I am not usually a fan of racing games, except Flatout or any racing game where destroying you competitors car is encouraged, but have been thinking of giving it a try due to the good word it seems to be getting.

A 386 with a whopping 12 megs of ram was my first Doom experience. I was hooked. Proceeded to work mowing laws, picking apples, then shoveling driveways and delivering papers to be able to afford the $1500 I needed to buy a 486 with 24 megs of ram and a copy Doom2. Damn computers were expensive back then. A cheap one ran well over $1000. Now you can pick up something decent for $600.

i dont know what exactly this thread is about. but im going to contribute on all fronts.

first - doom raped my existance, though on the good old sega genesis (with the 32x or whatever it was adapter). game scared me back then (as a youngin' really...) but i loved it. never quite got enough for those days. it was the first "FPS" I played actually.

on the account of GRID....i thought the demo was pretty awesome...but never thought to try it with my steering wheel and peddle set...has anyone had luck running it with wheels? does it take it well? Some games that are ported from console read wheels like theyw ere a keyboard....

Secondly, it seemed awesome, but I was afraid that the classes would all run together and not really standout...the demo left me feeling that way as the BMW and Mustang more or less handled the same and rove the same...any thoughts on that from you who have picked the game up?

Thirdly, how is the MP experience? like most racing games where 2 people think its funny to wreck as many as they can and just gay it up for everyone else?

All in all...I'm tempted to get it...it seems very worthwhile...but im hesitant to also have to figure on buying an xbox controller to get anything out of it....

The best part about Doom was it was pure evil. The music, the weapons, the atmosphere; Seriously being on Mars, then going to Hell?

Doom 3 was a fail. It's not about storytelling or fancy graphics.

I think DOOM 4 could be done right.

What is it about GRID here? I have a 360 Wireless Controller that I use to game with, downloaded GRID demo... and it's nothing special. There is nothing about it that kept me wanting to boot it again, just same old same old racer.

Granted I'm not a racing fan at all, but still, the game just wasn't any fun for me =/

Nope, never played Doom. Doom 2 or Doom 3. The "jumping out from behind a wall" scare never appealed to me at all and thats mostly what the Doom games are about. Mostly anyways.

Yes, yes I do. I was shopping at Software Etc. While I was purchasing some PC game which is lost to memory. I saw they were selling Doom shareware for either $4.99 or $9.99. Which gave the first several to try-out.

I remember installing it, and being my first person shooter, dodging the fireballs by moving my head. :D Those were the days, when Doom became a hit, I remember all of these shareware games coming out. Of course I remember the 1000 maps for Doom software too.

I remember playing Doom 2 the same way, with Way of the Warrior, Duke Nukem 3d, Heretic, etc. The golden days of computer gaming.

I never played Grid, been thinking of trying the demo. I like arcadish racing games on the PC, wish we had more of those.

Doom is probably a big reason I'm a metal head.

So many good memories with Doom, I still play it to this day. :)

I remember I couldn't get the gun sound effects working for some reason. My friend had a newer and better computer and he got them to work, that annoyed the shit out of me because the shotgun sounds had balls! :D Unlike any gun in Doom 3.

Last week I played on a ranked online session for the first time. 3 hours later @ 5:00am I went from being a Jr. Rookie to a 3 Star Pro. ;)

mmm doom....i was pretty young then when i first played it. my first thoughts were something along the lines of 'this is kinda spooky but a hell of a lot of fun! i dont think mom and dad will like me playing this...' and they didnt. but i played it anyways.

i actually just got a copy of GRID this weekend. i was building a computer for a guy at work (E8500 and a radeon 4850, so jealous. i still got an opteron 165 and 2x 7900 gto's.) and it came free. yoink! hes an older guy so i doubt he'll care

...maybe HL (the original, not that spiffed up version that has to put some T&A in it to keep you interested),

Amazing!!! someone that feels the same about HL2 as I do!

what you explain is to me what makes a game really good. You just get the 'kid at christmas' feeling in the first 5 to 10 minutes and then you don't want to let go.

Like Tronmaster, I remember buying the shareware version at Software Etc (now part of gamestop/eb) It looked like Wolf 3d on the back and being a huge fan of that I picked it up. I can just remember being blown away by everything. I mean, the gun swayed like a real person!! who would have thought something so simple could make the game seem so much more real/awesome.

Good games are the ones you want to keep on playing and continue to play even after their 5+ years old. I still play system shock 2 yearly and I actually started playing Duke3d again on Dosbox...the memories..

A friend had an IBM 386 and he had to play at low detail but on my 486SX/33 we were able to kick it up to at least a bigger screen size.

Ahhh the first time i played doom. I was a little boy, hehe. But what really sucked me into pc gaming was not wolfenstein 3d or doom, but duke nukem, what a classic. Those 3 games are the godfathers of pc gaming for sure. Grid is awesome!

haha, for sure! I had a Compaq 486/66 MHz. After setting up the soundcard MIDI and controls, I was ready to rock! Doom is still a milestone for gaming - endless fun and it's achieved legendary status - and deserving so!

I remember it clearly. I was at Circuit City with my dad, and they had doom 1 setup on a computer in a display, and i remember just playing it going holy shit this is the best thing ever.

Doom was never my thing, but i played the shiznit out of Rise of the Triad with a couple computers networked together :) Anyone remember token rings????

That game for me (on the PC) was Wolfenstein. Doom certainly took it to the next level though. Duke Nukem 3D was my favorite though. I played it for years even after Quake came out. I never liked Quake.

So how much were you paid to make this topic?

Seriously, Please give me a reason to play this bloated racer-on-rails with unrealistic car-handling, and not serious games like Test Drive Unlimited or the GT series on the playstation. I just don't understand you people so please enlighten me

damn, i must be one of the only people that didnt like grid at all.

i dont remember the first time i played doom, but i DO remember my first duke nukem titties! :D

I was like 8 or 9 when I first played Doom. Amazing time, but it scared the crap out of me. I remember thinking how amazing the AI was at the time. How does the Pinky always know how to find me? I would be afraid to make noises in the game because as soon as you'd shoot you would hear four or five monsters roar and come at you. I remember for a while I was really freaked out with the game so I'd always either play the Simpsons mod ("I'm chokin on my own rage here!") or the Star Wars mod with the huge Death Star level.

Good times.

I can remember playing this on my Mac Quadra in my room on a 17" screen. One night my buddy and I decided we wanted to play it in the dark in my room. We hooked up two sets of earphones (the big over the ear type) and my buddy sat on a chair next to me while we played. Got to the 5th level and was coming around a corner when a pinky screamed at us from a corner we had just passed. Scared the living **** out of my buddy, so bad that he actually fell out of his chair.

Wrong, doom was about fast paced killing and survival there wasn't a scary moment in any of them. Doom was one of the first PC games I played as a kid.

I got this. It looks great, but I felt no inclination to shell out for GRID like I did trackmania.

A buddy had a 486DX2/66MHz, it was badass, it ran everything AND it had a turbo button. My no-FPU-having 33MHz wouldn't run Duke Nukem for crap but the DX2/66 hauled some ass.

I still have the original doom floppies that I bought at the shop in 1995 or w/e it was.

Best gaming experience I've ever had tbh, that's when I first started to play PC games.

My thoughts on Doom....

well I was never really fond of my mom dating and I was to big into sega and nintendo.. well story goes my mom was dating this guy and I didn't approve. ( I was a trouble some kid) and story goes when he came to house mom told him I was into games, and so was he. he brought over some floppy disks and I installed it and my doom fetish started, Needless to say I started liking the guy my mom dated and We play co-op doom until doom 2 HOE came out.

I had an sx25 with a vesa local bus video card.. it struggled on the larger levels.. when I put 8mb of mem in it it did a lot better.. I eventually got an AMD dx2/80 and that played doom nicely.. we played a lot of deathmatch doom at my house.. wow.. it's like all we did for months.. lol. setting the network up for that might have even been what launched me into my network/systems admin career... I set up lans for peeps to play doom, then got a job at the local college setting up larger networks, etc.. lol

the game I think I had the most fun with since doom was Oblivion.. but only because of all the mods for it.. kind of like having all those .wad files to explore new stuff.. pretty fun.

Doom 2... DWANGO... 4 players over a modem.. up way too late... ahhh.. started my addiction ;)

Oh well.. that and I was a moderator on the St. Louis server when I was 17. Got called up to participate in that tournament they had. I went from there, straight into being a moderator, never had to pay. :D

Oh and Doom 2 was the first game that made me start upgrading my graphics cards just for a game. You'd be surprised what a nice fast 2D card with a decent amount ram could do for you during that time....

TF2 kind of brought that multiplayer excitement aspect for me, at least on the server I like to play on.

Doom is still fun. I actually fouund the CD for Win95 a month ago, installed it (works on Vista!) and played through it on ultra-violent mode. Can't aim up and down, but it's just so fund running around, dodging a million demons with my shotgun. Duke Nukem 2, and Duke Nukem 3D were the two other games I was seriously into at the time.

Damnit! I just wish I could enjoy games these days like I did back then... :(

Doom was such an awesome game on every level. My computer could barely run it when I first played it but it still rocked. Going into hell from mars and kicking ass, I really wish they could recapture that feeling with a new Doom game. 3 was pretty cool but still not up to the godliness of the first game.
