I just built a new rig and my Q6600 G0 stepping was sitting at 38, 37, 30, 33. Then I tried reseating the heatsink and applied Arctic MX-2 on there and now is idling at around 36, 35, 27, 33 with stock cooling. I heard that the hottest and coolest temps shouldn't have a difference of more than 5c. Right now I have a difference of 8c. Question is are these temps good?

it would appear that you left out what cpu cooler you are using.

They are alright, and while the 8C difference is a bit odd (check the pins are in correctly) I wouldn't say that there is anything that is out of the ordinary there.

ocellaris, I thought that for a second as well. He says stock cooling.

The on chip digital thermal sensors are not very accurate at reporting idle temperatures. The majority of the difference you're seeing is sensor error and not actual differences in core temperature. Intel is going to come clean later this week at IDF and fully disclose everything there is to know about these sensors. I'd wait for those announcements before worrying too much about your idle temperatures.

There are two Dual core processors within a Quad core. At higher temperatures where these sensors are more accurate (over 60C), you should see the first two cores line up with each other and usually on a G0 the second set of cores will line up and be 2C to 5C lower.

I just built my q6600 rig a day ago and I was also wondering what I should be at. I'm also using the stock cooler and I'm always at or around the temps you posted buy mines are in a staircase scenario rather than the last core being hotter. without my ac on I'm usually at 42c which might not be good but with it on it's around 37-38.

I'll probably be getting a mini ninja soon to solve this.
