The 4850 in Crossfire mode (2x4850) seems like a really great buy at $400.... I'm just wondering if the GDDR5 and the other improvements the 4870 has is worth the extra $200?

Right now, benchmarks seem to say that it's not a worthwhile investment. Were the 4870 a 1gb card, I would definitely see the benefit of having better memory bandwidth. I guess my real question is whether or not the boost memory bandwidth on the 4870 would ever be realized with only 512mb of video memory.

right now theyre not that much different in crossfire, but over time when the drivers mature it will be a significant difference i think.

you can get crossfire 4850 for around 350 bux which is a steal IMO.. on call of Duty 4 @ 1920x1200 maxed out i rarely ever get under 60fps unless theres a shitload of stuff going on with a army of people but even then it doesnt dip to a slowdown.looks great

In all honesty I'm leaning towards a 22inch monitor.... meaning I'd only be gaming at 1680*1050 (though I'll keep my CRT kicking around for when I need additional screen real estate) or possibly even 2x 19inch monitors, giving me tons of screen real estate for work, and a pretty decent-sized monitor for gaming.

@ 1680 even 1 x 4850 can hang in there good with most games... maybe you should just get 1 x 4870 ?
