I am finally getting a mac after so many years of avoiding it in favor of a PC. Anyways, my university is having a deal on macbook pro's, and I can get a macbook pro 17" with 2.4 ghz, 2 gb ram, 160gb HD and 512mb 8600gt for $1700 or so. Now heres my question: is it worth it at this price for this model, or do you recommend i wait for the brand new macbooks that are coming out in a month or so? Since i havent really kept up on mac technology, i was hoping some of you guys could weigh in here...

Im pretty much going to be using this laptop for school, music, movies, and very light gaming (once in a great great while using boot camp)... I know from reading on these forums that i could definately use 4gb ram because its so cheap. But as far as old vs. new models for macbook pro, should i spring for the clearance model macbook pro or wait for the new one? Money is a concern, but if the difference is huge, i may as well do it right the first time and get a good model macbook pro

That's a good deal for a 17" if new especially - only caveat is rumors are the macbook and ipods are getting updated next month and possibly the macbook pros -

But that is a really good deal for a 17" again if new and I'm right on year one with my macbook pro with similar specs other than 15" and its still screaming fast and first notebook I've kept for this long and still no big desire to sell and tradeup

So you're probably good with that unless just insist on having the new design one (honestly I like the current design and rumors are also they are changing to more of a form factor like the macbook air for all of them - not as thin and light of course but its overall look and shape - I like the current ones better myself but just an opinion)

the price for that model is a great price.
i doubt your university will lower the price (much less have the one you want in stock) when the new models come out, so your best bet is to buy it now.

if you can wait and absolutely want the new model, then do so.

well i dont absolutely want the new model, i just wanna make sure that i dont regret getting the current model after the new one comes out. If its fairly similar with nothing tooooo special, ya then i will probably get this older version of the macbook pro (yes its brand new)

A new 17" for that price is an amazing deal then - grab it and then get 4 GB ram online for under 100 bucks and you'll be set for a good while and not regret it at all

I need to know what University this is because I got my 15.4" 2.2 Ghz last year for that price! lol anyways Macbook Pro's are the way to go, question is do you need the 17" screen or could you settle with the 15.4"? All you are gaining by the bigger screen is the ability to fully display 1920 x 1080 plus 2 extra inches and I believe 1 extra pound.

Definitely go with the 4 GB RAM upgrade, I was at 2 for a long time and I mainly hover around 2 for normal use so the 4 GB is a good way to go if you ask me.

I watch articles all the time on RSS feeds, as of now the current rumors for the upcoming Macbook Pros that are supposed to debut this September is a glass touch pad (like the iPhone and iPod Touch) and a clam shell like that of the Macbook Air. Simply put the trackpad will just change what its made out of and still provide the amazing functionality of the older models. The new shell is going to change the corners now mine has the squared off corners this would be changed to the rounded off corners as well as a one piece vs the 2 piece model that is out now. It will still be the same thickness as before but just look different.

No SSD drives yet for the pros and of course with every release of newer models there will be a processor upgrade by 200 Mhz, so instead of the entry processor being 2.2 or 2.4 they are speculating 2.4 and 2.6 respectively. Apple does their best to keep things under wraps so anything is possible. Also check out the re certified section. Sometimes you will grab a good deal there and still get the full Apple warranty which knocks the socks off any other manufacturer there.

Apple is the way to go though I have only owned one for a year and a half but I can tell you I am working on building a Hackintosh because it out performs my Vista and XP boxes, plus its about $2000 less than buying a Mac Pro and get comparable results. Get some basic Unix knowledge as well you can tweak your system like I have to run better than it does OOB.
