So i went out and bought a xbox360 controller for PC and its complete balls, I know everyone says its the best controller for PC but It just flat out does not work for me. The computer recognizes the controller is plugged in,yet everything is completley unresponsive when it comes to pressing buttons using joysticks, the d-pad or anything.
(in games and even in teh test software that comes with the stick)

So what I am trying to say is, has anyone else had the same type of problems Ive had with this controller or, can anyone prupose another good controller to use instead?

Thanks spax, and krenum the controller looks like it'd work for exactly what I need, now do either of you know if there are any B&M's that carry it so I dont have to wait for it to ship?? :D

Im almost sure Bestbuy doesnt because when I went the only gamepad they had was 1 360 controller besides that they didnt have ANYTHING else that would plug into a pc...lol

Honestly, my favorite gamepad for the PC was the Gravis Xterminator. They no longer make it, but I have one or two around that I still use with flight sims and battlefield. Yeah, I can play with the mouse, the gamepad is just much more fun :)

Depending on what you're using it for (if it doesn't require two analog sticks) then this really is a good one to use.

You can still find it on eBay sometimes.

Man that thing is oldschool reminds me of a joystick I found that is a serial port LOL!!

I think the playstation-esque gamepads krenum and spax suggested would work niceley.

Thanks for the input tho

As I said, depends on what you're playing. That one I suggested works best for flight sims and other sort of simulated controls. It has well placed trigger and rudder buttons, as well as throttle and a hat switch.

So I added it mainly as a FYI, that there are some good gamepads for flight sims too. I would not want to use any PS/Xbox knockoff controller for a sim game.

360 pad does suck ass, i dunno why everyone here recommends it, only good thing about it is that its easy to find

the best gamepads on pc are imo:

dual shock 1 + converter

or

saturn pad + converter

the former is cheap and easy to find

Hell I love teh way the 360 controllers feel in your hands so Id be happy if I can get it to work, but like I said either this one Ive got is a dud or its just not gonna work on my PC :(

definitely try exchanging your controller, cause it sounds like you got a bad one. Mine is perfect, and runs every game 100%

Plus all the "games for windows" are configured to the buttons, aka "press A" "press (back)" etc... good ol microsoft ^_^

the only problem I had with it was with GTA San Andreas, but that was just because the game itself wasn't set up to read two joysticks plus two analog triggers on the PC... but theres a program called xpadder that fixes that (remaps the controller to keypresses)

try taking the controller back and exchange it - you can also grab a straight wired 360 controller, that's what I've got (just gotta install the drivers)

The best PC gamepad I had was the Belkin Nostromo N45. Very programable, and played Vice City on PC very well. When it came out several years ago, it was the best PC pad available IMO.

If anyone needs a source of Saturn pads, I have four!
Where can I find a converter? I'm going to use the special 3D pad that came with Nights: Into Dreams for me, and sell the others if I can. I even had a multitap and everything, Saturn was amazing!

I like the Nyko Airflo if you need something that has 2 analog sticks.
There are plenty of PS2 pad adapters (try Radio Shack) that also work well.
If you're looking for a good d-pad, see if you can find the MS Sidewinder USB on Amazon. It's got a killer d-pad for anything that uses one.

Exchange it. The 360 controller is the second best controller ever made (the Gamecube controller takes the cake), and it would be a shame for you to have to use something second-rate just because you got a dud unit.

I vote the 360 controller. cause most PC games are ports of consoles. So the controller is basically plug and play.

i use the logitech chillstream. I like the 360 type controllers since drivers are easily available and looks like vista had them in mind. I like the ergonomics too

One thing that has bugged me about a lot of the Logitech gamepads is something simple...the area around the analog sticks is squared off instead of being circular. It just annoys me, especially for games like Geometry Wars.

Logitech makes a Dual Shock for the PC so no converter needed. I used a 360 Gamepad on the PC an dit worked fine except in one game it caused a freeze. You have to a get 3rd party driver for it to support all games, can't remember the name of it right now so just search google, but any recent EA sports game will suppoort it out of the box. Anyway, IMO the 360 gamepad is the best feeling gamepad made today so make it work instead of buying a new gamepad. PS3 controller is ok but feels cheap in comparison and is a bit small for my hands.

PC gamepads have come a long way since the days of that cheesy Gravis gamepad from 1993 that looked like it was made for 5 year old Nintendo kids. That thing used to give my thumbs blisters.

Another vote for the Logitech Dual Action 2 -- basically a USB Dual Shock 2. No rumble, but then I was never a fan of all that. I'm sure there's a rumble enabled version by now. That, or as so many have said now, a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller works well also.

Is it possible to use my DualShock 3 with my PC? If so, does anyone know how? Thanks!

I use a Playstation2 controller with some USB adapter I found on ebay.

Only down side is the force feedback doesnt work and the buttons are all numbers so its kinda annoying when you try to bind keys. It doesnt tell you triangle or square or whatever its just a number.
