Hmmm something can't be right here...

Using Real Temp 2.60 with a Intel Q9450 w/stock heatsink using Artic Silver 5 and a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DSR3,

I get temps under normal operation of
56/56/44/45

Under a minute of Prime95, it goes up to
73/73/66/68

CPU Core in Everest is showing 1.10-1.14 V. Temps are actually 10C higher in everest. That can't be right.

Maybe because its a fresh installation using arctic silver? Or maybe I should clean and reappply the artic silver?

I'd def check your mounting, stock heat-sink = push-pins = bound for failure.

I hate pushpins >_<

Not due to AS5 at all... as blaze suggested, you may want to remount. I would HIGHLY recommend you ditch the stock HS/F and get yourself something aftermarket. The TRUE is bulletproof by comparison.

Just replaced the stock HS/F with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme.

Temps wtih prime95 running 4 threads for > 5 minutes are 59/59/45/46

Is it normal for the first two cores to be ~15C higher?

When all 4 cores are at 100% load I don't think there should be that much of a temp difference. Did you apply the thermal paste properly? i.e. I use the line method ...and I know I had to apply the line horizontally in the middle for my q6700 as opposed to vertically for Core 2 duos. You may already know all that ..but just checking. Only thing I can think of if it's mounted properly ...unless the heatspreader on the cpu isn't flat.

i just started a threat a few days ago

i have the same f'n problem

q9450 asus p5q
noctua u12p

15-20c difference at full load

That 15-20 °C is excessive. 5-10 °C is more like it. You can try re-orienting your HS from up/down to left/right or the opposite if room permits as well as reseating. My old q6600 was VERY concave and needed to be lapped to fix the temp differences. I also did the TRUE.

Lapping Q6600 IHS
Lapping the Ultra-120 Extreme

A large temp difference between pairs of cores usually means the heatsink isn't making proper contact with one set. Like the above poster mentioned, you can lap the heatsink if it's a problem with the base being uneven, but first I suggest you try remounting the heatsink and making sure enough pressure is being applied. You may also want to try using the washer mod to increase the mounting pressure.

At this point none of the temp programs are reliable for the Q9450 because Intel hasn't published TJunction Max (core temps are calculated form the distance to TJunction Max) for that chip. Best to use Tcase in the mean time. In general core temps are typically ~5C > than Tcase.

As for the HSF, make sure all four push pins are fully seated . You can only be sure of this by flipping the MB and looking at the pins. I know they say to install the HSF with the MB installed in the case, but I don't. I build a card board standoff and keep the area under the HSF mounts open. It must be open or you’ll brake off the push pins if you install on a flat surface. You may hear all four "pop" and when you turn the MB over one or more may be only partially seated. Pop the offender(s) and start over. Often on the second try it works fine.

By the way, I run my Q9450 OC'ed to 3.2Ghz on the stock HSF. I've even run it up to 3.4Ghz for fairly long periods but I keep a sharp eye on the Tcase temp. The stock HSF is fine for mild OC'ing.

This shouldn't be a heatsink issue, because the same difference in core temp was present with the stock HS/F as with the aftermarket TRUE HS/F.

73/73/66/68
TRUE Temps wtih prime95 running for > 5 minutes went up to
59/59/45/46

The TRUE HS/F shouldn't have any mounting pin issues because it uses spring-loaded screws that screw into it's own metal base plate under the motherboard.

Could it be possible you have two faulty DTSs? Not good if you're thinking of OC'ing. Might consider an RMA.

The differences with the stock heatsink were closer to 5-7C whereas now you have differences of 13-14C. You do have a point though, and it's possible the issue is that your CPU's heatspreader is uneven.

Just to be sure, under Real Temp "settings" all four TJ Max are set to the default 95, correct? I've read were folks will play around and forget to reset the them.

Is it normal for the first two cores to be ~15C higher?

On mine, Speedfan and realtemp both say that core 0 is generally 2-4C higher than the others, regardless of load, but nowhere near 15C higher.

Prior to lapping my CPU, I had temps on core 1 and 2 10c higher than my temps on core 3 and 4.
After Lapping my cpu, I still have a slight difference however its only 6~7c now.

So it very well could be an uneven heatspreader or even damaged temp sensors on the cpu.

i have had 5 e8400. the temps at the same vcore (+.20 over default) have varied by as much as 15c. this is not a hs/f or sensor issue. some of the cores have better contact with the spreader than others. an infitesmal degree of non-alignment could cause that difference. so even lapping the cpu will not help. its the contact on the underside that makes the difference.

It's been a couple days now. It's been through a few power cycles and prime95 crunching sessions.

my stats:
(Real Temp 2.60 / tjmax 95)

"Idle" Temp (Vista, Outlook, IE, etc.)
55/55/42/42

Max Temps: (Prime95)
60/60/51/51

It's crazy how fast this thing cools down. If I turn off Prime95, its drops within 2 seconds to
55/55/44/44

I'm trying to hold out on griding away my 3 year $350 warranty... =]
