I'm still waiting for benchmarks and maybe for prices to come down just a bit, but I'll probably be upgrading my aging 8800GTS 640 to a single 4870.

It is more than just clock speed that is different.
Yea, I was wondering about this ?
Is the first 4870 being released with DDR4 and won't be a big jump in performace from the 4850 ?
Is it true that latter a 4870 with DDR5 will be released that will be a much bigger jump in performance over the 4850 ???
Is this how the differant models of the ATI 4800 series of cards are supposed to be released ?
Will the 4870X2 be DDR5 and where does it fall in the release order ?

As always, I wait for more benchmarks. The last great card in my opinion, the 8800GT, was somewhat of a fluke by nvidia. I'm definitely glad ATI is making a small comeback but I want to see one company a video card that just shatters the differences.

I've read so much speculation about the 4870 I'm dizzy.
I'm pretty sure there will be a 512MB DDR3 version and a 1GB DDR5 version.....I cannot for the life of me recall where I saw that though.....I've been under the assumption that the real deal in the 4870 is a higher clock and 1GB memory.
These are available after July 8 if I'm recalling correctly.
I think there will be an X2 version but a date has not been mentioned.
I'm waiting until Wednesday to see what's what with the 4870.
If it runs as well as the speculation has it.......I'm in for 2.

Just got me a new 4850. With all the crazy deals that were around right at "release date", I couldn't say no. It will be months before the 4850 prices drop to what paid Friday. Still waiting on a new MB to get it set up, but I expect to get a lot for what little I paid. Normally, I'd be a bit more cautious about a new purchase, but ATI seems to have hit a sweet spot in the mid range with this card. I'm glad to see some good competition from ATI again.

I second that, if the 4870's X's two's are a hit then second two two two of them in my very first Crossfire setup ever!!! w0w!

There will be a 1GB GDDR5 version and a 512MB GDDR3 version. I don't know about 512MB GDDR5 or 1GB GDDR3 versions, but we'll see. The 4850 will also come in a 1GB GDDR3 flavor.

I don't want to SLI or crossfire because of microstutter. I haven't made up my mind yet, my eBay auctions did so well and since I can get 30% off the GTX 280 is tempting but I'd like to see how the 4870 GDDR5 scores (my 10% ebay coupon is up the 30th though, so I hope to find out next week!)

I already bought two 4850s for $263 total so I'm rollin~ I'm just too impatient to wait.

Yeah, I'm gonna need a upgrade as well. 7600gt can't cut the mustard and I need to get at least a 8800gt.

I game at 1440x900 so I'm thinking of something for around 125 topps....

Maybe a 3870

while the new card look damn good, less power and more production, my 9600gt 512mb is less than 3 months old and runs every game i have played on my 720p TV. So until i buy a better TV, game on a 22-26" monitor or play a game that stutters on my current system, I think i will keep my 9600gt

Waiting for Nehalem...and a the refresh...not a poll option so I voted "Not upgrading".

Waiting for more benchmarks here, or I'll wait for something that is actually worth upgrading. Right now the 280 GTX and the 4850 doesn't really appeal to me.

The GTX 260 looks very appealing as it overclocks to 280 speeds in the [H] review.

8800gt is more than enough for me at the moment, I need a new monitor before I look at new videocards anyways.

19" Samsung 955DF CRT lol

Price on the 280 needs to come WAY down and then I 'might' get one. Still wanna see what the 4870 performs like. All depends. And it's not like I can't play every game I have anyways. Crysis is not what I use to determine my upgrades.

Stuck between ATi for performance and EVGA for step-up.

Same here. I have until September 1 to Step-Up from my eVGA 8800 GTS 512MB. Fortunately, the 4870x2 cards should be out before then, so I can decide between that and stepping-up to a GTX 280. Also, I'm hoping the price drops on the GTX 280 by then.

I went from 7900GTX SLI to a 9800GX2. I don't need anything more for 1680x1050. Plus, unless the GTX280 is literally twice as fast as the 9800GTX/GX2 it is personally not worth it it me to shell out $700+.

same here. my P35 gigabyte board is one x16 PCI - because a few months ago i didn't even think i would ever go crossfire. i love the P35 OC's on my E6320 (and another Biostar on my home file server) with the Q6600.

but since my 22" gateway is 1680 max, i am playing COD;MW at max settings and 60+ fps. and even crysis runs great at mod/high settings at this rez. i had an 8800GTX and its now relagated to my daughters PC now for her online disney games.

i am definitely set for awhile until the 10.1 directx games come out - and heck - i may even be able to play those as well :) LOL

I purchased two BFG Geforce GTX 280 OC cards the other day. However if ATI pulls off something amazing with the Radeon HD 4870X2's I'll probably convert to a pair of those if the gains are worthwhile.

Stepping up from the "hold me over until GT200 arrives" and all to cheap so it shows 9800Gx2 to "the real deal" GTX280 for like nothing (€12) mainly because it is better for me and to protect the investment i made ontop of the better secondhandvalue than the stupid Gx2-shit i atm. hate along with all multigpu X2/Gx2-way and perticular Gx2 with all it flaws of struttering to the left and to the right on top of soundissues that cost me €126 for a X-fi Titanium PCI-e to "fix" and the all to low memoryamount that is not close to be enought for 24" gaming. Also i am one of those that do perfer 1 physical GPU that do 100% over 2 physical "even if they pretend to be 1 but failing doing so" all days of the week.

However IF ATI can do wonder with 4870CF/4870X2 and those are significant faster/better AND has fixed the multigpu issues that is annoying and that i now pay 12€ to get rid of i will collect the better value of the 280 and go down the X48/X58 route and 4870CF or even 4870X2CF.
If i am then doing what i say i don´t like at all is just because i forgotten all of the multigpu-issues i had with the Gx2.

However GTX280 SLI is not out of the path completely if the issues i have with Gx2 are just Gx2-issues or they are not as big in "real Sli" with powerful cards as in "beginners Sli" with more mainstream cards and therefore not notisable the same way. But that requier Nvidia to have a good LGA1366 board to as nehalem is the only thing i am sure of will be the major upgrade during 2009 or even late 2008 as i already made one of the foundation for that with DDR3 upgrade.

Good god that hurt to read.

That not easy to wrote either even if it was a sloppywriting, but when i am pissed of Gx2-problems thats what happens if i find a cheap way out of the missery.
Shortversion: Gx2 suxs and make me skeptic to multigpu until i forget about it downsides.;)

I thought it was just rambling borderline Engrish, myself, but I'm used to deciphering wtfese. I work in tech support.

Anyway. Can I have the [H] demo 4850 when you're done with it? Please please please? :)

Well the 9800GX2 itself is a decent card. I sold one of mine to a friend and I kept one to upgrade the girlfriends' rig. Again with the exception of Age of Conan I never had any problem with it and it certainly was faster than a single 8800GTX. Now Quad-SLI on the other hand was horrible. It is as useless and nearly as poorly executed as Quad-SLI on the 7950GX2's were.

I'd be skeptical of anymore multi-GPU cards as well. However ATI is rumored to have developed the 4870X2 as a dual GPU solution from the start. It is possible that they'll get it done right but I'll have to wait and see.

if anything, i'd be excited at the prospect of owning a Kuroutoshikou 4850 myself. the cool guy pic on the box says it all :)

Most likely going for the dual GPU 4870. But I want to see a [H] review and some info on its powerdraw before buying. Crossfire and SLI holds no interest for me. Is there any confirmed price on this card?

I am pretty sure Ill go with a 4870 X2, but First I will purchase a 24' widescreen...

Where's the option for "waiting for 8800GTX price to drop"?

Last-gen's "top dog" is always faster & cheaper than the current gen's "midrange."

Edit, Actually a 8800GTX is more expensive and performs worse than an 4850..

not upgrading, 8800GT does everything I need and more right now, and I don't have any money set aside for computer stuff anyway.

I guess it's almost a crap shoot. I've never had issue with the 9800GX2 itself, only with my unique setup. I have a 9800GX2 for my 22" monitor and a 7900GTX for everything else. This three-GPU setup (two on the 9800GX2, one on the 7900GTX) causes some programs to freak unless I disable the 7900GTX. But that's my strange setup, not the 9800GX2.

Yeah and how long til Nehalem hits the streets (desktop)? 6 or more months is a long time. I bet Nvidia makes Nehalem boards...

Q4 08 in a $350 minimum SKU.

I'm betting the marketing of "Core 3 is the ideal holiday gift" will be in full swing for x-mas, so I suspect you'll see em pop up on store shelves in November.
