Hi all,
Here is the story, I am building a new rig and for the cpu cooler, I wanted something different than what I used on the other machine the tuniq tower. I almost bought the TRUE but I saw some pictures of TRUE pulling the Mobo and got worried so I went with 9700NT, MISTAKE!

Thought I think it looks cool, it is really noisy, it is the loudest thing in my case, I bought 4 Noctua fans for my case and all I can hear is the cpu fan spinning loud. Disclaimer that my room is really really quiet so when i said loud, it prob. isn't very loud by standards, but this is [H]...so I guess I can get away with calling it loud.

Here is what I had in mind and wonder if it's doable. 9700NT uses a 110mm fan, I was wondering if a 120mm fan would fit, I plan on cutting the Noctua p12 out of the casing and drill 2 holes on the back and mount it how the stock is being mounted. Would it fit?

Has anyone tried this?

The other option of course would be a new cooler, but damn this is new, it would almost be like throwing 70 dollars in the garbage, not something I would like to do.

You'd probably render the replacement fan inoperable before you managed to get it crammed into the Zalman heatsink.

The 9700/9700NT does come with a Fan Mate 2 so you can adjust the fan speed, have you tried using it to dial down the speed some?

Although the 9700 is a bit long in the tooth it's still not a bad cooler at all and will hold it's own quite well with any modern LGA775 or AM2 processor.

The 9700 NT does not come with the Fan Mate 2 because it uses a PWM connection, unless he replaced the 9700 NT fan with a fan from the 9700 series.

So...if it's PWM controlled, then couldn't the OP just adjust the RPMS in his motherboard's bios?

wow, bicycle, thank you, that was great. Great! The thread gave me some clue. The only question/problem now is if the 120mm fan would fit, I would have to "measure twice cut once"

lucky777, I tried in bios, it is still pretty loud after tweaking. Like I wrote earlier, the reason why it is loud is because my room is really quiet, otherwise I don't see how the noise becomes a problem. Though even the Noctua appears to be a bit loud, 9700nt is the loudest part in my case, that's why I want to mod it, eveything else is at a reasonable level "relatively." I tried to disable all fans other than cpu and gpu, the noise level did not decrease by much, that's why I wanted to mod the cpu fan.

I shall look into measuring the opening of 9700nt and see if it would indeed fit a Noctua p12 and probably hook it up to a fan controller (if it fits, fingers crossed).

A 120mm fan will not fit inside the 'crown' of the heat sink, and you have to use mobo standoffs to mount it forward of the crown to avoid snags.

Also, its possible you don't have the fan connected to a PWM connector. Is the lead plugged into a 4-pin PWN connector, or a regular 3-pin fan connector. List your mobo model so we can see if there is a PWN connector onboard.

^^^ No, it cannot be controlled by the motherboard. If I plug it in directly, it's as loud as a jet engine.

I actually have a Zalman 9700 Blue LED (with Fanmate of course). If you want to trade your PWM fan for my Fanmate fan, I'll be willing to do it (if you pay shipping).

Well I meant thru software like speedfan(but I guess this would depend on your board), or use a controller
All 3 wires fans can be controlled
