Does it matter? I'm under the impression that if you're using optical out to a home audio receiver, there should be no signal loss because DACs don't come into play...the signal stays digital, right? I was thinking abuot getting an Auzentech X-Fi Prelude, but now I realize I might not benefit from this at all (don't need EAX)...thoughts?

If I am reading you right..You need a transport to your amp..So dumping a bunch of bucks on a sound card with all the bells and whistles might not be the best choice.. So look for something with a quality spdif out

That doesn't have anything to do with the digital out.

Your main concern for a transport would be features(dolby digital, bit-matched playback) and drivers. Unless you need EAX, it would be pretty pointless imo to get a prelude.

The poster was looking at the Asus. Not OP. I use the Juli@ spdif for my transport to a dac..What would be your suggestion?

If you can find one get a Chaintech AV-710. Very cheap and very good when used as a digital transport via optical.
