...any tips for someone who's just bought his first Intel board? (My past two have been AMD 939s.) It arrives tomorrow. Also, can I expect to see my X-Fi behave (due to lack of nTerference from the nForce chipset)? It usually works, but sometimes I have to reboot to kick the static.

My X-fi fata1ity works fine with my Abit IP35 Pro with the Vista x64 drivers. Just disable the onboard sound in the BIOS.

IP35 pro is a great board. I haven't had any issues with it and my X-Fi Gamer works good with it too.

probably the most important thing to start with is make sure that you set the RAM manufacturer's recommended voltage rather than the JEDEC 1.8V that the board tends to set.

I just noticed: The ethernet rides the PCI bus. That doesn't cause the X-Fi to go shit-tastic, does it? I know that if I use the nForce controller on my nForce4 mobo, the X-fi goes to hell...

Definitely do the bolt mod:

At the least , take the heat pipe system off and check it for flatness and to see what kind of contact it's making with the PWM's. When I took mine off , it was only making contact with 3 of the 12 chips. I set the heatpipe assembly on a flat surface and you could definitely see the tweak in it. Better to be safe than sorry! I got lucky and heard about the mod before I installed the board.

IP35-Pro, WinXP, 4GB and XFI XtremeMusic, Q6600 @ 8x400, no problems, awesome board :D

Where would I get fans to add, should I choose to do the whole "bold mod?"

I tried to point out that flaw in another thread and the ABIT Nazi's jumped on me to defend the board.
See here too: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1031946777&postcount=1

How soon we forget how popular the ASUS P4C 800-E Deluxe was over the regular P4C 800 Deluxe because it had the Gigabit ethernet on the CSA and off the PCI bus.
/rant off

-Robert ;)

I'll just grab a PCI-E network controller then. But I'm also not going to be doing anything other than gaming or surfing the 'Net.

The IP-35pro is a nice board. I only really had one major issue with it regarding booting when you had all the HDD slots used up. It was a bios issue, that was fixed in an update. I use a separate gigabit ethernet card in my system and the built in sound features so I haven't had any issues like some mentioned here.

it's not a problem for 99% of people & it was a deliberate design decision by abit to allow for a x1 PCI-E slot to remain available when the x4 PCI-E slot is in use (for Crossfire, RAID etc.) where Asus, Gigabyte etc. all disable theirs.

I suppose it all depends on your priorities.

Don't use the "Reset Failsafe Defaults" option in the BIOS cause it disables pretty much everything including your usb keyboard and mouse, both ethernet, sound, etc.

Use the CMOS reset switch to clear the CMOS before you get ready to power on for the first time.

absolutely.
it's not a right or wrong but an alternative.
1 of the things that I've liked over the years about abit was their willingness to think outside the ordinary.

After just one night with the IP35 Pro I am new Abit fan. I've been using Gigabyte for years but I got an GA-EX38-DS4 and it was a piece of crap. I "downgraded" my motherboard to the IP35 and upgraded my performance. Things just work right on the Abit board. No double boots or endless boot cycles. Windows boots faster. Benchmarks are right on par or faster as before. Much better experience overall.

1.9MB/sec on my downloads for the 8+ months that I've owned it. Yeah the limitation on the PCI controllers is severely limiting my internet connection....

/sarcasm off, don't listen to the naysayers or gigabyte fanatics. I use 1 pci card. Like the guy above said 99% of Abit users never see a difference.
