How to setup for coolest case

Fans that is

Right now mine is setup like this:

Side Door- Blows air in

Top case- blows air out (exhaust)

Back Fans (2) Blows air out (exhaust)


Im missing two fans in front of the case because i cant remove the front plate for some reason. The two fans infront would be intake, but i cant install them. Do they really make a difference?


Should the side fan be blowing air in or out?
 
Hmmm. Well I have the X-Dreamer 2 or w/e it's called. I can't think of the name offhand.

Anyway. My setup is:

120mm exhaust in back
80mm exhaust on top (top is best cuz hot air rises, cold air sinks)
80mm intake
2 x 80mm Intake in the front
80mm exhaust in the back mounted on the base of the case with 2 sided tape

My temps have never been a problem.
 
If you can't mount a front fan, you should at least try to remove as much front-intake flow-restriction as possible - so the front-to-back air flow is improved.

Using the combination of rear exhaust, top exhaust and side intake essentially creates a short-circuit air path from the side intake to both exhausts - leaving your hard drive(s) running in a warm air pocket.

I'd try removing and taping off the side-intake fan and removing the 80mm rear intake fan. I think overall air flow would be better - particularly for your HDs.

Fans that don't appreciably improve efficient air flow are just unnecessary noise-makers.

What case you have would help answer your question most accurately.

If you have a case with a GIANT side panel fan, like an AEROCOOL ZERO DEGREE BLACK, then side panel in, and exhaust fans in back, and exhaust vents in front would work well.

Since you have no front fans, I'd imagine no matter what case you have, side intake would be best.

Just don't pack your HDDs to tight. If you're one of those 5 HDD type dudes, that might be tough.
 
The front fans not being there should't make a huge difference - you want to look at how much CFM's your fans are pushing in and out of your case. Of course the fans that are larger or spin faster move more air so take into consideration that not all of the fans are equal.

IIRC (and this seems to make sense in my head) if you have more air being pushed into your case than is exhausted this doesn't allow hot air to escape efficiently.
If you have more air being exhausted, then you form a low pressure area in your case which then essentially becomes a vacuum, and things will get pretty dusty if you don't have filters.
Of course, the best case scenario would be to match the intake and exhaust but without those front fans, I don't see how this is possible in your case.

Because heat rises it pretty much always makes sense to me to have the top fan exhaust. What case do you have and what how is your PSU setup? You have to count your PSU fan as well because that is exhausting hot air out as well. It would seem logical to have the fans on the back serve as an exhaust so by process of elimination that pretty much means that your side panel fan should be an intake.

You could always do some experimenting to find out what happens when you reverse things, but I think you have it set up right.
 
Side fans are usually better suited to exhaust fans. You want to map out the air path in your case, if you have more exhaust CFM than intake, you will draw air through open holes (pci slots, front grates, etc..). However, without active control of the fans you can get bad air cycles and pockets of "dead air". Try to get intake fans on the front and have back and side exhaust (usually).
 
Sorry, forgot about this thread. I got a pretty old case.. matter of fact its the same as the guy in here.

I used that case for about 3 years, well the regular X-Dreamer. Its a fun little case to mod, but thats about where the goodness of the case ends...

i have no idea what i have.. but it looks exactly like that. Brought it years ago.. so its either the X-Dreamer-2 or X-Dreamer.
