I'm getting some odd error when I try to run any source based engine games. "HL2.exe has stopped working"

I've uninstalled the whole games from steam
I've uninstalled steam
Reinstalled steam and the games
The same thing happens

Tried running driver sweeper, etc, etc...

I googled for some of them and I don't believe the DEP issue, as this never had happened to me before, just out of the fucking blue sky, hl2.exe decides to royally screw me.

Anybody?

Windows Vista Business 64bit (all updates installed - no SP1)
All drivers are latest

I started getting that error with TF2 all of the sudden. It doesn't happen every time I play and it only happens when I exit the game.

i have been getting it sometimes also, i just keep launching the game until it goes away or a restart of the system works

I'm getting it for all of my source games, regardless of the number of restarts I've done, reinstallation, etc, etc...

The above fix I tried, didn't worked for me but it fixed one of the odd network issues I had so that's at least of some use for me.

Seriously I didn't pay to have my games fail to work just cause it decided to do so.

goodluck fixing it, I've tried everything too. I had to re-install vista to fix it.

I have this same problem. Happens every time I exit TF2. I'm running Vista 32bit, with all updated drivers.

Yeah, seems like a lot of people are getting this problem, I too have this problem, but it doesn't affect the gameplay so I don't really care, heh.

vista 64bit here. This does happen to me as well. Since it hasn't effected game play i havn't pay much attention to it. I type quit in to counsel, wonder if that may have something to do with it? Also my game crashes most times when i tab out...that sucks.

I have the same problem. And sometimes when I tab out I get the infinite loop back and forth between desktop and game. That is annoying. You definitely can't alt tab out of TF2. Weird.

When I installed Vista a few months back, I started to randomly see this error as well. Everything from Adobe Bridge to The Witcher were prone to this crash. I did a ton of research and Googling trying to come up with an answer - and while I didn't come up with anything concrete, I pretty much narrowed the culprit down to Nvidia's drivers.

I could only laugh when a few days ago I saw this.

Anyways, I've since reverted back to XP until the drivers (Nvidia or not) have more time to mature.

Firewall issues? Anti-virus? Try disabling then run the program. See if it makes any difference.

For what it's worth, I had this same issue. I fixed it by installing SP1 for my Vista Ultimate 64 machine. Works great now!

Interesting. That would be good news, because other than that one constant, annoying error, I really loved Vista. Perhaps on my next reformat I'll give it another go.

Well I have SP1 installed on my Vista64 rig and I still get these errors from time to time..

I've been lucky...I only get this error when I exit a game..so hasn't impacted me...yet...

I get this error after a few minutes of play, and it then shuts off the program. Can't play TF2 anymore without it shutting down in two to ten minutes. It also seems to be happening a little quicker each time I load the game. I suspect I will also eventuallly get the error at starup like others here and elsewhere... CSS I can play for hours, no problem...

I just got Vista, it's needlessly ominous, and I don't like the fact you have to approve everything five times before it'll let you open anything...

Such an annoying error even though it only occurs after I exit. I can't believe Valve has not fixed it yet.

Oh that's the first thing I turn off after installing Vista.

agreed, go into account settings and turn off User Account Control.

Also, I often get this error message after closing source engine games. I don't care too much though, as I can still play fine.

i get it whenever i exit a hl2 based games and certain other applications. i wouldnt mind it too much except im trying to use the hammer editor. and in order to set the configuration you need to exit and restart. well when i exit and hl2.exe crashes it loses all the configuration data i entered and as a result doesnt save it. so when i restrt...gotta do it over again. and since the changes wont take effect till the next restart...and it wont save when it crashes... yeah. pain in the ass. i guess i wont be making any maps or mods till they fix it.

i have vista business32 and have seen this error once after i made some weird keystrokes...but it has never come back

p.s. but i have never updated my video card drivers on this machine so maybe it's some issue with new(er) drivers??

I got this problem out of no where a while ago, too. I couldn't lauch HL2 at all without it crashing. Try going into steam>settings and disabling steam community in-game. Can't remember exactly where it is but for some reason that fixed the problem I was having.

Same here on Vista64 sp1. Only when I exit, and only sometimes.
