I just rma'd my ip35pro and since I'm going to have to reinstall all the components - I decided to upgrade my heatsink to the Ultra 120 extreme... But it seems that noone has any in stock? What's going on.. Has it been discontinued?

Quieter? It doesn't even come with a fan. :p
Erm, yes it does, check that link again. If it didn't have a fan it wouldn't come with an RPM, CFM, and DBa rating ;)

Edit: or did you mean the TRUE 120 doesn't come with a fan? In that case, the one I linked is an especially good deal, cheaper than the TRUE 120 and it comes with a fan :p

WTF is a "True" 120? As far as I know there's an Ultra-120 and an Ultra-120 Extreme.

Yea, I meant the TRUE. It was a lame joke at best. :D

ThermalRight Ultra Extreme 120

EDIT: Beaten to the punch once again.

Got something to back the better cooling claim up? I cant imagine how it would cool better, its the same exact design more or less, except the TRUE 120 has more heat pipes, and bent fins which forces the air to make contact as it flows...

Price/Performance looks like it could be quite good though...

The heatpipes come in direct contact with the CPU's IHS. That's about the only real difference as far as I could tell.

This Xigmatek seems to be an excellent product for the price, however i cant help but notice they dont mention the rpm of the fan they used on the TRUE 120 or even the Ultra 120, and i also find it strange that the Ultra 120 beats the TRUE 120. Unless of course, these two heat sinks werent using fans for these tests, which i somewhat doubt.

Not calling BS, but the Xigmatek fan went all the way up to 2200 rpms...for all we know they used an 800 rpm fan on the TRUE 120, although with the higher dba i doubt that...they definitely should specify what speed fan was used, and what type of fan, and until i see it (maybe i missed it somewhere?) i really cant take this article for anything other than an opinion.

Well I have an Xigmatek ordered and on its way, I'll report back personally if you like :p

The Xigmatek performs well, and while I don't have a TRUE to test it against, it performs a hell of a lot better than my Scythe Ninja, while using the same Yate Loon 7v fan. 2-3c lower idle, about 10c lower load.

Im starting to think the TRUE fins are too close together to provide good and very quiet cooling. It seems to perform extremely well with high loads, but it also seeems to need a high CFM fan (read: loud) to perform so well.

Im running it with an 800 rpm fan and have idle temps of 30ish and load temps of 43ish. CPU is an e6700 at stock settings. The "ish" is really dependant on room temp..sometimes my room is cool, and its sub 30 CPU temps, sometimes its a bit warm and its above 30. Case is Antec P182, 4 fans in upper chamber, 2 low speed intake, 2 low speed exhaust, 1 low speed on CPU. Case and fans are dead quiet to the point where when i walk into the room, i need to listen real close to make sure my PC didnt turn off.

That link lists the noise level, so you can judge the fan from that.

The Xigmatek @ 50.7dB outperformed the Ultra120 @ 53.7dB (louder fan) by 1 degree.

The Xigmatek @ 50.7dB outperformed the Ultra120 Extreme @ 44.5dB (quieter fan) by 1.6 degrees.

Well, you definitely need the right fan. Some fans do not do well at pushing air through tighly bunched fins. The Noctua S12 is one such example. Replace a Noctua S12 on a TRUE with a Scythe S-FLEX or Noctua P12 (running at the same noise level) and your temps will drop 3-6 degrees.

That Xigmatek looks pretty damn cheaply made to me. I ordered a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme yesterday with a nice Panaflo fan. I'll let ya know how quiet and cool she runs on my Quad.

Any moderately educated hardware enthusiast would never draw conclusions on fan speed based on dba level. The judgements to be had from the article are essentially worthless considering we have no idea on the fan rpm and mostly, no idea on the maker or what type of fan. There are plenty of fans that push way more CFM at lower noise levels than their counterparts.

2 questions.

Anyone know of a place (e.g. crazypc.com) that sell it pre-lapped that has some in stock?

Also, would it help at all to have it lapped when my cpu isn't?

Thanks

From what ive read, lapping the CPU provides a larger benefit. I lapped my CPU and TRUE 120 and had no difference in temps. Not sure why, didnt really look into it since it wasnt running any hotter and i kinda just lapped them because i was bored.

Lapping doesn't do anything if your CPU HS and TRUE are level.

Lapping is often recommended for the TRUE because Thermalright's quality control isn't the best. However, if you get a good piece, lapping is just a waste of time.

Ive got the TRUE 120 on my E6320 i broke the intel one lol (well the clips)

Allright heres what i got sound is hideous when the fans turned up but thats besides the point...

Setup

Case: Xion Stacker
CPU: E6320 (stock)
CPU HS: TRUE 120
CPU HS FAN: SILVERSTONE FM121

Temps:
CPU: Idle
CPU HS FAN: 0% (1000 rpm or so)
TEMP: 24 C

CPU: Load
CPU HS FAN: 0% (1000 rpm or so)
TEMP: 30 C

CPU: Idle
CPU HS FAN: 100%
TEMP: 24 C

CPU: load (100%)
CPU HS FAN: 100% @ 2400 rpm (or so)
TEMP: 30 C

Tests were taken for 5 minutes with everest ultimate doing the stress test and mesurings

btw the cfm is like 30 somtin to 110 or somtin like that...

Well, he isn't going to get a good piece because they are convex by design to match the concave IHS on most Intel/AMD chips. This isn't speculation, it is right from the horse's mouth.

You're going to have to repeat this experiment using coretemp to take the temp readings. Your temps above are bogus as you took them from the "CPU" sensor that doesn't exist in a C2D/C2Q.

Would be interested in seeing real life use and experience with this - The XIGMATEK HDT-S1283. The concept looks good.

I ordered a Tuniq T120 with the SFlex E Thursday, will have it tomorrow. Also, got some X23-723 from CrazyPC ( they sipped same day, good experience with crazyPC ). I would have gone TRUE 120, but with my 680i, everything I can see from pics, reviews, etc, I would have had to twist it 90 becasue of the NB HS and fan, which would have sux0rz I think. So, went with the Tuniq.

but then, I read about that XIGMATEK HDT-S1283,hmmm. Yes, the base looks kinda poorly constructed, and the frosty review guy seems a little...err..flaky, but conceptually, HDTS makes alot of sense.

the dimensions seem odd... I wonder if I would have to twist this too..to blowing vertically? if so, that would not be good.

It's a controversial thing; some say that's correct, others say it's to cover for lazy manufacturing. I really couldn't say.

Lapping the CPU is obviously an unpopular thing compared to lapping the heatsink, since you're voiding the warranty and run the risk of damaging an expensive component, whereas there's less you can do to what's effectively a lump of metal. Which isn't to say that no-one does it by any means, but it's not as popular as doing the heatsink.

I saw that, but thought it was a BS excuse for poor quality control.

If it is intentional, then it's clear that the variance between parts is significant. I've seen photos showing TRUE120s that are I thought were curved to a ridiculous degree. But mine isn't like that -- I can't tell mine is convex by looking at it from any angle.

So... What is recommended? I don't really feel too comfortable lapping my cpu. I want to place an order for a new heatsink fairly soon since my RMA board should be arriving within days.

Should I have the heatsink lapped? even though it won't match the IHS' concaveness (if true).

Depends... are you planning to o/c the machine? If not, don't worry about it. If you are and your temps are too high, you'll either have to upgrade to liquid cooling or get comfortable about lapping the IHS on the chip as well as the base of the HS :)

I'm currently running at 3.2ghz. Just bought all the necessary items to lap both the HS and the cpu, plus heatpipe mod.

Any advices when it comes to lapping the cpu and hs? First timer here ^^

After originally reading about lapping I was somewhat against it, especially lapping the CPU. However, after order a P35-DS4 motherboard + Q6600 + TRUE120, and unable to get my CPU past 50% load without it's thermal protection tripping in, I decided to take the plunge. Boy, you would not believe how concave the cooler was, took me a long while to get that thing flat. Now my cpu runs at 52c full Prime95 load, 4 cores, at 3.2ghz (8x400).

Seriously? I am pretty happy with my TRUE 120, but if I could drop my temps another 3-6 degrees just by switching fans (I have the S12) that would be great.
