I believe I might have melted my 6800 :x

Specs:
AMD Sempron 2600+ (Socket A)
1 GB PC3200 DDR
DFI NFII-400 AL (nForce2 mobo)
40 GB HD
320 GB HD
nVidia 6800 (AGP flavor~)

This morning, while i was playing Team Fortress 2, i noticed my monitor showing a black screen intermittently. concerned that maybe I was overheating my vid card. i had known it to run hot, it has the stock cooler on it from EVGA and ran at 80C while idle. i had never tested it while fully loaded, because, well, i assumed that the EVGA cooler did it's job and kept it below the threshold that the card can handle.

well, you know what they say about assuming.

so later on, right after i quit TF2, i load up nTune to see my temp. I had never checked it's temp right after or during a game before, so I was curious to see how hot the card got. When it loaded, i was shocked to see it was 114C! I was stunned, so I immediately turned off the computer, to cool off the card. I opened the case (which btw has a front fan and a rear fan so air flows through the front and out the back), let it sit for about half an hour, and retried. About 4 seconds after loading windows, the entire screen gets super-distorted, like how your TV screen would look if you pulled the game cartridge out of a NES or SNES while it was still turned on. I think it's possible that i've always ran the card at 100C+, and just now am seeing the effects. Thoughts? Insults?

Thoughts:

I miss my 6800NU. Overclocked it to 7600GT speeds for 3 years with an Arctic Cooling NVSilencer5 (never went above 55C on load). Factory Nvidia made card too... *sigh*... and replaced with an eVGA 8800Ultra.

R.I.P. to another 6800 user :/

If it runs 80C idle then 114C load is not a stretch. Sounds like the heatsink may have not been properly seated.

Either that or the fan is dead.

On my old 5700 Ultra the stock fan died after about a year. It made a lot of noise before going out. I replaced it with an Arctic Cooling fan which apparently silently died some time later and I didn't even know it until one day I had the case open and noticed the fan wasn't turning (ceramic bearings, pffft ). Who knows how hot the card was getting. I didn't game on that card much though so probably not too bad. :)
