AM2 cpu rocks in its socket

OK, this seems to be a pretty serious issue. I have an AMD Athlon X2 5200+ for a GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4. Building two identical computers here, the first one was just fine as far as its cpu and socket went. When I tried installing the cpu into this board, however, the chip did not lie flat. It was so uneven that it could rock it back and forth. The cpu is aligned correctly, and does actually drop into the socket, but it will not drop all the way in evenly. I have not tried clamping the lock down, nor do I want to.

If the corners of the socket were labeled

the rocking has an axis along corners 1 and 4.
Is my motherboard warped, or is there a bad manufacturing job on the cpu?
 
did you check for bent pins on the cpu? If you find any, VERY carefully use a tiny screwdriver or something to straighten it out a bit, and see if you can get it into the socket.

RMA the board, probably a manufacture defect
 
Wow, thanks for the fast reply.

Looks like there was one slightly bent pin. I think I got it straightened out since I can no longer see it at a glance. When I insert the cpu now there is very slight rocking, but it is much much flatter. Does this sound safe to use or should it be 100% flat with no rocking?

I suppose that's probably a no-brainer question, but I've never had this problem before so I don't want to make any mistakes and ruin someone else's equipment. (though I suppose that may be too late with that cpu)

well when your cpu is sitting in the socket & the lever is not put down, sure, the cpu will move slightly to the side and back, but once the lever is locked in place, the cpu should be in rock solid....does that help?
 
Yea... it rocks a little bit before locking it down.

BTW Locking it down is kinda like the e-brake on your car...

I've accidently yanked a proc out of my computer, no bent pins, nothing broken. My heatsink was stuck to my CPU, had to use a blowdryer to heatup the paste and twist it off. (This was an X2 4200 AM2, so same socket style)

Just like if you accidently start driving w/ the ebrake... nothing bad...
 
read the manual you will probably find a section telling you tu apply some small amount of force to the center of the cpu as you lock it down.A small amount!
