I always seem to get a low score even with what I think is a good rig.

C2D E6420 - OC to 2.395 GHz (can't seem to get above that without crashing - on stock cooler)
4 GB memory (Vista 32bit only recognizes 2.8 for some reason)
XFX Geforce 8800GT 640Mhz OC

3DMark Score 9844 3DMarks

SM 2.0 Score 4599 Marks

SM 3.0 Score 4866 Marks

CPU Score 2017 Marks

As with my previous build, that seems pretty darn low for the parts I have in my pc. I saw where someone else had a score of 13000 with an 8800GT. Much better CPU but I wouldn't think that would make it 3000+ better.

Its definently just your cpu. 3dmark gets a huge chunk of its score from the cpu tests so thats why you are seeing "subpar" scores.

How are your games running?

Yet another reason why game benchmarks > synthetic benchmarks

Only tried oblivion so far and ran decent but still seemed a bit choppy with no AA but every other setting maxed at 1680x1050. Tried using HDR but that didn't go over well.

I was getting a black screen at the arena area when I got near the exit door from leaving the orc prince. every time i tried to walk forward, I got a black screen. I had downloaded the latest patch and the lastest nvidia driver so that's not a solution (just installed vista so don't have old drivers) Probably a game issue over a graphics card issue though (never had that happen though playing oblivion with my 7900GS)

Also had weird stuff at the side of the screen when I was out in the forest area and looking around really fast. Like some 25% of the pixels on the side weren't getting replaced fast enough.

I'll try Compoany of Heroes tomorrow and see how it runs.

Get your CPU above 3GHZ adn you will see the difference. I was clocking 13K runs with my E4300 at 3.5GHZ.

No 32-bit OS will recognize all 4GB of your RAM--you need to get a 64bit OS.

Your copy of Vista gives you the rights to both 32 bit and 64 bit--Microsoft will mail you a copy of 64bit if you look on your vista box, but they charge $10 for shipping.

On a Q6600 @ 3.0GHz, BFG 8800GT with a minor stock OC and 2GB of RAM in windows XP.

Another thing to consider would be to look at if you are forcing AA, AF or any other quality settings through the NV control panel. These tests are generally done with all of that off for apples-to-apples comparison purposes.

2 ^ 32 = 4,294,967,296 addresses (bytes).
ans / 1024^3 = 4 billion addresses (gigabytes).

a 32bit os can recognize precisely 4 gigs of ram, however, included in those 4 gigs is your Vram.

I just got my system running last night here are my scores

3DMark Score 11879 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 4883 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 5031 Marks
CPU Score 3849 Marks

I have a superclocked 8800gt though (650/1900)

I overclocked to 3ghz and got
3DMark Score 13490 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 5640 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 5437 Marks
CPU Score 4710 Marks

Nice OC. 800 on the clock, wow.

No volt mod or anything?

Just changed the timings and voltage in the cards bios, also used a more current BFG OC2 bios instead of the older standard OC version the card shipped with, it seemed to help out a little more.

I see, the reason I ask is that I can attain those shaders and mem you posted, but my core clock maxes at about 725.

Since these are all nVidia reference cards, can I use that BFG bios mod on my eVGA GT?

If so, what timings and volt did you use?

thanks everyone, always wanted to know how inferior my system is in comparison :)

I installed Vista 64 yesterday and now my CPU won't overclock at all without my pc freezing up. Thus, my CPU score dropped and my 3dmark06 score is now about 9100.

For some reason, I can't overclock my E6420 at all using ntune. I'm not sure what the issue is because you'd think a simple 2.2 GHz OC wouldn't be too hard for a CPU that everyone claims can OC past 3.0 GHz. I asked for help on the oc forum but no one there seems to want to help me. I read the how to and that doesn't seem to provide any insight as to why my CPU won't OC. I am using the stock cooler btw

On a brighter note, company of heroes seems to run really nice on my PC. Guess Oblivion just has issues with every system I have tried it on lol.

lol I'm downloading 3dmark06 right now, I bet I'll get about 8k because of my CPU, kind of silly

I was able to OC my CPU to 2.8 GHz and got the following score.

wow, how did my computer get a higher score than your C2D and DDR2? I'm so proud of it

Thats a good improvement, will actually help with certain games like RTS and maybe flight sims etc, even at modest resolutions.

You should be able to get that C2D up to 3gig NP on stock Intel cooling, 3gig is a pretty mild OC for a C2D. Anything much over 3 gig and you absolutely need a after market cooler, 3.3 gig on a E6400 or e6420 should be pretty doable on a half decent mobo.

here are my scores

Anyone else having trouble with getting your online results from the 3dmark06? I keep getting the following page when trying to see my results

HTTP Status 404 - /orb/receiverd06.jsp

type Status report

14,685 in 3dmark06 with my 8800gt, see the sig. :)

Could get more, but my cheap $20 cooler for my CPU is barely (if any) beating my stock heatsink I had on it.

13624 on stock speeds from BFG 8800GT OC

My 3dmark scores on my builds usually suck.. so im surprise its so high.. ;)

I got around 8500 with AMD X2 4600+ and MSI 3850 OC version (690/1660).

I have no idea about forcing AA/AF but will look in the CCC and see.

Using an e6750 and an 8800GT, here's what I got at a couple settings (for the hardware--3dmark06 was left at its defaults):

CPU@3.2 GPU @600/900
Total: 10976
SM2: 4831
SM3: 4868
CPU: 2857

CPU@3.2 GPU @720/950
Total:12704
SM2: 6024
SM3: 5765
CPU: 2852

CPU@3.4 GPU @720/950
Total: 13061
SM2: 6170
SM3: 5808
CPU: 3031

It was part of a bout of testing to see how much effect different CPU speeds had on video performance. School got busier in the middle of it, though, so I got sidetracked. Still this bit is relevant for this thread.

i always get an error when i click submit results...have reinstalled atleast twice.

just got my pieces put together last night using my cousin's eVGA 8800GTS 680mb to test if my parts are working. (i am one of the victim of the msi 8800gt non-deall too :/)

first time with all stock timing etc, got around 8000 3DMark06 score.

then reached 12942 with some overclock both VGA card and CPU

Q6600 @ 3.1Ghz eVGA8800GTS 640MB @ core 680 memory 980, 2x1GB Ram

stock cooling on video card, temp got up to around 72C @ loaded
CPU got up to 45 @ loaded w/ zalman CNPS9700 + artic silver 5
MSI P6N 650i Platinum
Corsair Dominator 2x1GB
Windows XP x86.

Seems like I'm doing pretty much on par.

737/1836/1800 on the 8800GT, 356X9=3.2GHz on the Q6600.

3DMark Score 14177 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 5982 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 5645 Marks
CPU Score 4979 Marks

Hey folks. Pardon my n00bocity, but I have a question about this thread (as you will tell, I'm definitely not as computer inclined as you guys are): Just how important is CPU performance in gaming? I was under the impression it's all how well your video card performed.
