Ok I'm going to ask for either the ATH-A700s or the ATH-AD700s for Christmas, but can't decide on which pair. I don't know the real difference between open and closed. Can anyone suggest which pair to get?

Thanks!

in my experience open cans give more natural sound and cause less ear fatigue.
==> are better BUT less practical, because sound leaks both ways. Especially unusable outdoors, so depends how you gonna use them and what for.

It's easier to make an open can that doesn't have sound distortion. As Jim said, open cans "share" what you're listening to with everyone around you (slightly less so than actual speakers, but still quite a bit), and don't insulate you from outside sound.

In this case, I think they both have very good sound, such that deciding which sounds better largely comes down to individual taste. If you share living space, the A700 would be a good choice.

Thanks for the replies. I decided on the AD700. I kind of like the look of them a bit better. I live with my girlfriend, but my PC area is pretty secluded.
