InfoWeek has a roundup of the 6 lamest iPhone-related lawsuits filed this year. Everything from a guy who brought his iPhone to Europe and racked up $2000 in international roaming charges to a lady suing for $1 Million over the iPhone price-drop!

Apple always has been a target for lawsuits. With close to $15 billion in cash gathering dust in its bank accounts, it's no wonder that disgruntled or disillusioned customers and competitors might seek a payday. Here are six of the most onerous cases.

Several of those lawsuits are legitimate though. They may think they are lame but, the people suing have a good point and I hope they win.

Lawsuits 5 and 6 are actually legitimate. This article is stretching a little bit to make 6. The rest are a result of their tactic of having it only work with AT&T though, which I think they also had coming.

6 is legit. Apple is familiar with this guy, since they licensed the patent he held when they released the Newton.

5 is legit, but you need to consider that Cisco did let their trademark on the "iphone" lapse when other related products were using the name. Just cause Apple made a product that made lots of money (or was going to) does not mean Cisco should have sued at that point. the Mark was already diluted.

4, well, buyer beware.

3, its not so much the locking, but the bricking. Imagine if linksys broke your wrt54g with an update because you place dd-wrt on it for a while. Apple is in the wrong.

2, he knew that ahead of time, or should have (ie have read his contract). Fool should be banned from using cell phones for a year for the frivolity.

1 noone has a right to a profit. Cell phones are not a regulated product, so Apple doesn't have to keep it at a certain price. Hell, compared to other similar phones, the iphone was above market value, so dropping it down made it fair market value. Apple also does not have a huge market share of the cell phone market, with plenty of competition, so where's the antitrust? She should have to pay out a million for being such a money hungry dirtbag.

lol only 5 and 6 are legitimate. A user suing because he was a dumbass to use his phone and took it up the ass with roaming charges is his damn fault. lol @ the lady who thought she could get a million from apple because she couldn't sell the phone for twice the profit on egay. the other lawsuits are basically the same lawsuit just worded differently, i guess that could be said also with the dumbass who bit the bill on the roaming charges. just because you can't switch to another carrier you throw a fit, shut your yap. You know what was gonna happen when you walked into ATT and bought your nice iphone.

Yea I gotta agree with 5 and 6 being legit.

The voice mail thing seems legit but it will be up for the courts to decide. Don't know enough about it to know if they really have a case or not but they might.

The cisco case is legit. Hell apple knew cisco had a trademark on the name and used it anyway. They have it comming to them to loose on that one.

I agree with 5 and 6 being reasonable. But the rest are just plainly stupid. Especially number 1. And did Apple offer some money back too? Stupid reasons to sue. A drop of $200 doesn't equal 1 million. She's such a dumb***. Hope she lost/loses and have to pay for all the court fees.

5 & 6 are definately legit and I also think 4 is legit.

Apple has a habit of making items that you can't change the battery in and then charging outrageous amounts to do so. This is an intentional scam and they should be brought to task for it. Not everyone knows to ask about something like this and Apple relies on people not knowing in order to get one over on them and screw them.

Batteries are one example. Memory prices for people shopping at apple.com is another HUGE ripoff. I mean come on, $850 for 4gb of memory? I mean apple has a lot of people who are clueless about computers and for apple to take advantage of them like this? To me, it's downright criminal.

scroll down and look at 4gb memory option

Apple should have released the iphone to all the networks. It's as simple as that but, to sue them for it? They are just hurting themselves by limiting the sales. I wouldn't mind having an iphone if they fix the battery issue and allow you to add your own memory stick and run 3rd party apps but, I'm definately not going to switch from a company I really like to AT&T crap.

2 & 1 are definately lame. Everyone knows roaming charges cost more and come on, everyone knows that you ALWAYS pay higher prices when you are early adopters of hardware. I don't care what it is, new things ALWAYS cost more. Sure it's usually longer than 2 months down the road before prices come down but...

That's true with many products, and the charges aren't outrageous in my opinion. It's something you factor into the cost of operation, though Apple should probably declare it quite clearly (but should not be legally forced to do so).

It's profit-seeking behavior. All current Macs have user-upgradeable memory, so one doesn't have to pay Apple for memory. They charge much higher than average because they can (though I think it's probably a poor thing to do), and you'd better believe that many users opt to only configure machines with the bare minimum so that they can install their own less expensive RAM later, so Apple's missing out in one respect. Certainly most folks buying Mac Pros with 4 or 8GB of memory are snagging RAM from Crucial or whoever, don't you think?

Deplorable, perhaps. Criminal? Nah.

If Apple has a habit of this then people should already know about it. Also, what is illegal about them making a product in this manner? They choose how to build, operate, run their business, and if you are unhappy with this then go else where. This is why we have competition so if X company does something wrong you can go to Y.

No it is not, Apple is a company and they need to make a profit. Now not every company charges that much for 4gb of memory, but most pre-built system will charge you ~400 for 4gb. Also, if you really want that much memory and are worried about price you would look else where, and then learn that for much cheaper you can get it else where.

Why should Apple do this? So they can fit your needs, that is not what they do. While they are in business to help their customers, they are also a business that needs to make money. Also, Apple did go to other cell providers, in the U.S., and some turned them away. So this is not Apple's wrong doing because other (cell companies) did not want to sell the iPhone.

Read the quote for my response.
Most of these are funny and just show that the consumer market is uneducated and unaware of what exactly they can & cannot do. I just hope that soon we will stop these stupid lawsuits.

FTA, Cisco lost the case, becase of prior mark dilution.

Yea, any company can build things the way they want but, to intentional build something that requires the user to go without their product while apple does something the user should easily be able to do and then charge outrageous prices, just shows what kind of ripoff company they are.

People that buy apple computers are people that don't know computers much and thus don't know you can get cheaper memory. That's the ripoff. Them price gouging their customers like that.

I never said they should do something to fit my needs. I won't buy the apple junk, I know better.

I do look somewhere else. I build my own systems.

The comment that people should know is just wrong. Just because apple has a habit of something doesn't mean everyone should know lol. There are a lot of clueless lemmings out there. The fact that apple likes to rip em off because they know they are clueless, just shows the lack of morals. They deserve to be sued.

Practically every single cell phone out there has replaceable batteries. People that don't really know have got used to this fact and just don't think about it and unfortunately trust apple to do the right thing. Yea, they are stupid for trusting apple for anything but apple is just as wrong for trying ot take advantage of them.

It's profit-seeking to the point of price gouging and running a scam.

I am educated about this stuff, that's why I don't buy apple products. As far as the average cionsumer market, well, yea but that doesn't mean a company should have such low morals that they are willing to take advantage of them.

That's an extreme overgeneralization. Apple still has a tremendous presence in the "creative professional" market, where buyers are typically better informed than average consumers.

Price gouging would be a problem if they were the only supplier of compatible RAM, but they aren't. It isn't a problem.

If apple needs to make X dollars to be profitable and they manage to get 99% of that from uneducated consumers, and then the educated consumer can only has to pay 1% that is awesome! Ya know what that sounds like? It sounds like buynig a car. If you know what your doing you can pay about 10% less than the average consumer on the whole car. Or let the dealer make a 500$ profit off you instaed of a 3500$ profit. When was the last time someone screamed anti-trust about car dealerships?

What I meant was a lot of people that buy at apple.com are people that don't know any better. They just want something they can turn on and use, just like a lot of people that buy at Dell or HP and so on, don't know any better. Sure you have businesses and professionals that buy from Dell, HP, etc. also.

I'm comparing people that buy from these places versus people that know enough to build their own systems or know about prices, etc. More people that buy the pre-built systems are less than computer savvy.

For apple to knowingly set those prices to that extreme, knowing there will be customers that come there that don't know any better, is just plain low.

For apple to knowingly fix their devices so that people have to go without their phones and ipods for something as simple as a battery change and then charge the crap out of them, is just low.

They are no better than the people doing the Nigerian scams.

First, you ever notice a consumer built system running OSX (legally)?
Also, if your battery is under warranty Apple is obligated to fix it, which in all the cases (both iPod, iPod touch, iPhone, etc.) they seem to do a very good job about it. The one concern people have is that they are charged for a "loaner" phone, which (as an iPhone user) I understand completely because you need your phone so you have no choice.

Also, this has been discussed in this section, Apple section, computer hardware, etc., but it has been shown that the mark-up from Apple is not that extreme compared to other Window based PC sellers. Of course you can build your own Window base PC, but what if I want to use OSX then I have to buy from Apple and if that is what I want then I pay for what I want.

Yep and their markup is a lot like Dell, etc. I have no issues if that's what they want to do.

My gripe is with the memory charges and with their intentional battery crap. That to me says low life scum.

I don't see why they just don't release OS X for the PC completely. I mean a Mac is nothing but a PC now anyways. I guess they like only having 100 or so users. To each his own.

Did someone spit in your breakfast or something, you seem really pissed about something?
Intentional battery "crap," well from the beginning of the iPod it has always been like this and never was there a problem. Also, what is so wrong about them doing it with a phone? If you have a problem they will replace it for free, it is under warranty. The memory deal is with any company, go look at any OEM dealer or pre-built shop and they will charge four times the price for ram because it is one of the biggest places to make a profit.

Why can't they release it? They could, but by having control on their user base (which is much more than 100) they are able to provide better support, better security, plus more. You could say this is so because of a smaller user base, which is part of it, but the large portion is because they have a tight control on their market which lets them do the above things.

iPhone = the only product in history (afaik) that people were actually pissed off about a price drop.:p

Jeeeeeeeeezeeeee!! you'd think they would be happy about a cheaper phone. I just do not understand Apple twits. Early addopters always take a beating later on. You think the people who waited in line and then eBayed are compaining? Only if they couldn't get rid of the phones before the price drop.

For all we know the lower price is actually going to make them a better profit in the long run because of the affordability and better adoption rates.

The main problem I see with the iphone is being stuck with ATT and no contract-reduced-price. Isn't that the one freedom you get with buying a full-priced phone (no contract)? They sure pulled a fast one there.

No one spit in my breakfast. It just pisses me off how these companies rip people off.

Yea, it's people's fault for letting themselves be ripped off but when a company does it knowing people won't check into things, well...

Yea, apple having a small following, they don't have the virus writers going after them. That's a good thing because OS X is just as insecure as Windows, probably less.

I mean why goto a house and give someone a virus when you can go to the mall and infect a lot more people :)

Most would say OS X, especially Tiger and Leopard, are somewhat more secure than XP, and slightly more secure than Vista. It can be made more secure right out of the box by setting some visible and non-visible settings, but it's still generally advisable to have other layers of protection. Additionally, OS X apps are designed to be more multi-user aware, unlike Windows apps, where many programs can only work properly with admin access, making it especially prone to attacks. Most any properly designed OS X app should work properly in a user environment.

You might actually want to try having some first-hand experience with MacOS before you run around spouting half-truths to satisfy your anti-Apple agenda. I don't think you're as concerned about these specific issues, and how they actually affect consumers, as you are purely excited about the prospect of having more ammunition. That's how I see it, anyway.

Right, because allowing mainstream users to use the "Friendly" OS X on any PC made to date would do wonders for their hardware sales.

1) Buyer beware. This is no different from EVERY company to date. I can still buy a 2gb SD card at Best Buy for 50$ if I wanted to. Or, I can get it for 9$ at NCIX. This isn't Apples fault, this is the current state of the market.

2) Who cares WHY OS X has less viruses than XP... The end result is, they do. The proof is in the pudding, not the theoretical.

They are no better than the people doing the Nigerian scams.

You are very, very misinformed. Fraud is an antisocial behaviour. Markup, is the underlying driver of capitalism.

There is markup and there is ripoff.

$850 for 4gb memory that is normally $120 or so, well that is ripoff. A scam is a scam.

If OS X became as popular as Windows, you would see so many holes being exploited by virus writers that it would make Windows look like the most secure OS ever made. They haven't been put through the fire yet.

I never said I didn't like OS X but fact is fact as far as security goes. I just dislike apple's lack of morals.

Because OSX isn't Popular enough yet, that with their whole "No virus ideal", you would think a bunch of virus writers would target it just for the lolz of saying "FIRST!"

Nah, if you are going to do damage, you don't go into a house, you go to a mall (figuratively speaking of course).

I think some have already made them just to say see. There are apple viruses out there. Just not near as many because it's a waste of their time and skills to go after something so small.
