ATI 3850 cooling?

Yeah, I hear ya on the cooling. My 3850 ran 83C @ IDLE!!! But before you go out and buy some new hardware I'd try a software solution first. ATItool won't do it, but RivaTuner will not only allow you to run your Vcard's fans at 80% (or 100% if you like), but also let you force it to do so at windows startup. After forcing Vcard fan to run at 80% my GPU runs a much cooler 45C @ idle.

I had thought of this but this is a friends system and he prefers it to stay quiet. That fan gets LOUD.

I almost want to try a cheaper zerotherm and actually cut the back piece off the stock heatsink that bolts through teh card. It seems this is the piece most aftermarkeet coolers are missing. The stock is a nice size copper and the zerotherm should run some air across it. Im sure im not the only one who has thought of this and im eager to see what ppl are doing. This card has been very responsive to overclocking so far with just hte little bit we have played with.

hrmmm, k....if you're friend would rather void the warranty on their brand new card over a little more fan noise (it's INSIDE the case afterall) go 4 it.

Thats what I like about EVGA and XFX... warranty even after aftermarket cooling. Voiding a warranty never worried me or him in the first place. You can deal with the noise but this guy prefers not to.

The DuoOrb fits well on this card. One of the reviews put it one one of the 512Mb models + some RAM sinks.
Worked very well but can't remember which review.
