John Carmack and Anna Kang sat down with Gamasutra for a little interview action today. The questions mostly cover Id Mobile and content development for the DS but that doesn’t there weren’t some interesting answers slipping out. Here’s a good one:

We ignored Nintendo for a long time for a number of fairly good reasons --- we hated dealing with them 10 years ago, as they always lagged behind the front runners in terms of raw technology… now we’re branching out onto lower-end platforms, so now its an interesting platform for us to be looking at.

Hehe, translated, "Our 3D shooters stopped making me the millions of dollars they used to in the past so we had to put our tails between our legs and try to get some of that Nintendo action." ;)

Maybe I am just an old fart in this arena, but I have not desire to play games on my phone or "mobile" platform. Any of the games that even remotely interest me I do not want to see on a 2" screen.

Tiny screens directly attached to a shaking controller don't exactly provide for a very immersive experience. Example: Metroid Prime Hunters, a shooter for DS, is just sad. Amazingly well executed considering the platform, but still... not good.

DS is good for other things-- ad hoc repeaters and stuff.

News flash, theyre still lagging in terms of technology.. whats changed is that they're the #1 selling console platform regardless of technology.

Translation: "The console is booming and it's a perfect opportunity to making money so we're interested..."

People have been calling id games tech demos since Q3:A. I played that game so much for years. It was pretty awesome as a multiplayer game. I even liked playing Doom3 and the expansion and Quake 4 (not really id). The Unreal Tournament games are more fun IMO, but I thought that id's last couple of games were still good.
