I just picked up an NEC HR-1100A HD DVD ROM. It can read regular DVD's just fine. However Windows does not recongnize HD-DVD's when i put it in there.

Machine Setup:
E6600 C2D @ 3.6
2GB RAM
8800 GTX
POWER DVD ULTRA with latest patch
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate
Westy 37in 1080p Monitor

WTH AM I MISSING!?!?!?!?!?

Try uninstalling the drivers and removing it from device manager, then restart, then let it reinstall the drivers for the drive. If that doesn't work, contact NEC.

Well, the seller was kind enough to take the drive back, but my curiosity forced me to continue to do some research.

From what i understand this drive although it was originally released to public was then used for Toshiba's A1 HD DVD players. The drive is attached to some USB daughter board which is believe to contain the security info that makes the HD DVD player HDCP compliant. It also seems that the daughter board references the serial number of the HD-DVD player ... thus preventing you from taking an HD-DVD player from one player and the daughter baord from the other. Both components must come from the same Toshiba DVD player. My guess is that this player would work with a firware change, however after searching on NEC's website and searching high and low, i can not find a firware upgrade. The reason i believe that there had to be something at one point is because NEC originally intended this drive for public use as a stand alone player for PCs and then changed their mind knowing they could make more money from a Vendor like Toshiba in a market where no one was really still ready for HD movies....

In anycase without the daugther board, or the firmware fix, the player is pretty much a brick....WHICH SUCKS!!!!

So... i went and bought an Xbox 360 HD drive today from Best Buy. I got Hero's Season 1 for free because of the promotion they are running.... a ($99.00 value), and i got King Kong, and i am getting 5 other DVD's because of the Rebate special. Practically taking the cost of the player away.

Ok, I've been doing some research, but nothing seems to ever get my problem solved. One time, I did managed to get a temporary fix thanks to w1retap, and I reported back HERE. But soon enough, actually a reboot after, the problem came right back. My problem is exactly as what the OP was stating, other that I have a different drive, which is the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive. It worked perfectly for a while, until one day it just refused to. When I insert a movie, the mouse shows as if something was inserted in the drive, but then tells me otherwise. And yes, I have tried the Toshiba 2.5 drivers too with no success. Also, when I went and checked in the Device Manager, those 2 yellow warnings appear, which I've never seen before. I'm not sure if they're related, or maybe it could be something else in my PC. But I don't know, everything works like a charm, except for this damn drive. What's going on here? Has anybody experienced this issue, and if they did, how do they managed to solve it? Here's a picture that shows that I'm having the exact same issue as the OP. Sorry for the size:

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Well, the SM Bus controller is on the motherboard, so you need to get that fixed right away. Update the drivers for your mobo chipset. And something in your PCI slot isn't being recognized as well. Clear up any driver issues, because system instability can cause weird shit to happen.

As always, thanks for your replies w1retap. Now, I might sound a little ignorant here, but how in the world do I do that? hehe.:p I know my friend helped me over the phone to set that up about the mobo the first time I build this pc because it was my first built rig, but I don't quite remember how to do it. Also, lets just say I don't have access to that friend at the moment.

So, what should I do here? I do have the cd that came with the mobo tho', if that matters.
Thanks.

Get all the little yellow (!) signs cleared up in device manager before anything. I would recommend actually getting the drivers from the manufacturer's website since they will be the newest ones out.

So, the first thing you're going to do is get the manufacturer and model number of your motherboard, then go to their website and get the newest chipset drivers.

As for the PCI device, I don't know.

But the SM Bus controller missing drivers could be causing the whole problem. A few years back when I had those drivers missing the computer would randomly just not do certain functions. What the SM Bus controller does is help with functionality in various devices attached to the motherboard. (lower voltage or bandwidth)

Pop your driver CD into the CD drive on your computer. (I know, like where else?) then open your device manager and click on the PCI device with the yellow !. Then go to update driver, go to browse and go to the root of your driver disk.

Click update or whatever is there and in a few moments the machine should find the drivers you need and install them. Usually just having the machine look for the PCI driver will cause it to find both since they are related. The SM BUS is your system BUS manager, so yes, you need it.

Hope that helps a bit.

Luck;)

Ok, I tried all that was suggested here, and kind of got something fixed, but still haven't found a way to make the damn drive work. Ok, I did got rid of the "SM Bus Controller" after going to the Gigabyte website, and downloaded the mobo chipset driver from there. Still, the "PCI Device" warning still pops up. I've read some customer reviews from sites and several of them say that this is happening to them as well, and say is when you enable a feature in the mobo, this warning pops up. So, I don't know what this warning is actually doing, since all of my hardware connected to the mobo works just fine. I did tried inserting the disk that came with the mobo and looking the drivers for it that way, but I receive no results.

As far as the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive, it still doesn't want to cooperate. I went to the Device Manager once again, and did an ever deeper investigation as to what are actually all the things that get installed once you plug it in. This time, I found a total of 6 things:

=========================================
DVD/CD-ROM drives:
--- TOSHIBA DVD/HD X807616 USB Device

Universal Serial Bus controllers:
---Generic USB Hub
---USB Composite Device
---USB Mass Storage Device
--- Xbox 360 HD DVD Interface 0
--- Xbox 360 HD DVD Interface 1
=========================================

So, I went and made sure I un-installed all of those, and then restarted my PC. After booting into Windows, I get the little pop-up message next to the clock telling me a device was found and was installing drivers for it. It shows several names, all of them included in the list above, but the last one says "CD-ROM Drive" if I'm not mistaken. So yeah, I don't know why it says that, nor do I see it listed in the Device Manager. W/E, after that, it gives me a message telling me to reboot once again, so i did. Come back, and NOTHING. God damn, still refuses to read my disks. I mean, it spins and everything, and it shows activity with the mouse, and then stops, but nothing more.
GRRR.:mad: I'm frustrated now. I might take the drive to my uncle's house, just to make sure it works, since he has a Xbox 360 that I can hook it up to. OR, I can go into my sister's computer and try to hook the drive there. Is just that I'm too lazy to do that. Well, is just that I don't have anything to transfer files right now, so I'll have to relay on uploading PowerDVD to my website and then re-downloading it on hers, and THEN test it there to see if it works.
So yeah, I don't know what's going on here. I've been doing lots of research on Google with as many keywords as my head can come up with, and I see no results after reading tons of pages.

:p jk

Try the drive on another PC or plug it directly into a 360. If it doesn't work you know it is the drive. Don't take the lazy route then keep coming back here. You have to cancel out possibilities when troubleshooting so we can help you narrow down the problem easier.

I know. Sorry.
Well, I stilled haven't tried that yet, but I did found something interesting. I think I finally found out why the "PCI Device" shows up in Device Manager. Well, I went to check my temperates in EVEREST like I do sometimes, and happened to see the yellow warning again under "Windows Devices". Well, this is what it shows for it:
Intel 82801HB ICH8 - High Definition Audio Controller [B-0]
So yeah, seems it is the audio drivers. So then, I'm just fine since I purposely decided not to installed them, since I wanted to use my X-Fi anyways.

UPDATE:

Well, I went I tried the drive in my sister PC as said before. Umm, something funny happened. I installed the drive, and it was refusing to work with Transformer's Disk 2, so I decided to try King Kong. Sure enough, the disk was recognized. At that moment I knew that for some reason the drive is refusing to play some movies. I went back to my PC, and tried King Kong, it worked. So then I go back to Transformer's Disk 2, and it refused again. So yeah, that was the disk I always kept inside the drive for this last few tests, so that's why I didn't see any results after re-installing everything. I went and checked again all of the movies and saw witch played and which don't:
==============================================================
Transformers Disk 1: So So
Transformers Disk 2: Bad
300: Bad
The Bourne Identity: Bad
Heroes: Good
King Kong: Good
Superman Returns: Good
==============================================================
Good - Works 100%
So So - Reads disk, but movie doesn't play.
Bad - Disk not recognized.
==============================================================

So, I don't know what's happening here. Why would a drive selectively pick which movies to play? It doesn't make sense. So, is there a pattern that is going on here that I don't know about? Either way, I don't have a 360 available to test that. It's probably gonna take a week before I'll be able to visit my uncle and check the movies with his console. Until then, I'll keep trying on my own.

Ummm. Still looking for an answer. I still believe my drive works since it plays some movie beautifully without issues, but for some others it just refuses. Is this even possible? I think there is some driver issue here going on, or maybe something else that prevents it from playing. What's going on? Am I the only one with this issue unsolved?
I'm just trying to make this work. I want to buy a few movies this upcoming Black Friday, but if I don't manage to get this to work, I don't know, I might just buy a PS3 for all you know. I'm just really frustrated as I try everything. The only thing I haven't tried yet is to hook it up to an actual 360 console, but I dough I will have a chance to do that anytime soon.
Anyways, thx again for all the help provided so far.:)

There are some fresh Intel drives for your PCI device problem, you should be able to find them on your Motherboard manufacture's site. I can't promise that will fix your particular issue but without it everytime you reboot IRQs will keep refreshing which is never a good thing. IRQ conflict and PCI conflict can keep a bunch of things not working properly.

Luck
