should i split and use separate drives?

the chance of a drive failure cant be that high...

Software RAID under windows is not a good idea. Very unreliable. Either get a hardware raid controller or use linux.

Thanks,
Mike

i know its not ideal but it integrates into my current server. i really cant afford ahardware raid controller.

I don't think it will help unless you unraid them. Then volume management becomes a hassle. Maybe you should keep an eye out on ebay for used hardware controllers. Windows RAID is a POS. I would stay away from it.

its the biggest pos ever. its just crashed again.

im going to break the array in a minute,

is raid actually needed with modern drives? i meen with all the smart tools etc you should be able to tell when a drive is gona fail.

SMART only gives you a very rough idea of the drive, it is by no means a barometer of when the drive will actually fail! Just keep an eye on the drives, if you see one of them getting flaky then back up it pronto, the chance of one just grinding to a dead stop is very remote but none the less real, so keep a backup of all important files off the server.

how am i supposed to backup 2tb of data? its not really practical to be honest. il just keep an eye on the drives, iv only had one drive ever fail in the past.

what do you guys think?
