Staples to Sell Dell PCs

Staples will begin selling Dell PCs at all 1,400 of its retails stores around the country. Staples will carry the Inspiron 1521 & 1721 notebooks and Inspiron 530 desktops.

Dell and the world's biggest office products supplier announced Monday that Staples would offer Dell desktop and notebook computers, monitors, printers, ink and toner starting Nov. 11. Dell products also will be available through Staples' Web site.

Walmart was the first to do this. They sell the 300-600 Dell PCs.

I think it's good, because a lot of people ask for Dell where I work.

Dell expanded to retail markets becuase their numbers were down and HP was beating them. And now that they are hooking up with Staples, I am predicting that Dell is still hurting and that HP is becoming dominant in the numbers game.

In the UK, I've rolled out a few thousand machines for various multinationals and finance firms in the last 18 months. Some just last week. All kit is now HP, some Lenovo (tiny, tiny percentage), no Dells. In fact one of the rollouts of 60,000 machines, most of them were Dells that were being replace with HP kit.

There is definitely a lot of motivation for Dell to end their traditional direct order/sale model in favor of a blend model. Desktop PC sales are okay in recent times, but notebook computers are the fastest growing segment (or were). They probably need to get more in the retail stream so that consumers who would otherwise purchase a notebook from Gateway or HP would take a look at Dell.

Either DELL doesn't like to be questioned about this, or this online rep doesn't want to be bothered. In either case I was highly PO'd at this result from DELL. If service is this bad pre-sale, makes me not want to buy from them as most likely after sale would be worse. Would be great if this monitor were sold local, I do not like what I'm hearing about dead pixels and panel lotteries etc. I would much prefer to hook up a unit at the store or at least be able to take it back without shipping costs.
