I am sure this question has been asked a bunch, but I could not find any solid answers on this topic.. So, here it goes..

On this latest build of mine, I decided to purchase a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500gb hard drive. When I installed it, I connected the Sata data cable up and I felt it "click in". When I connected the Sata Power Cable up from my power supply, I heard what sounded like plastic snapping in two. I removed the Sata Power Cable and sure enough, the black plastic area completely around the power connector on the hard drive was completely broken off. UGH!

So, I called up Seagate and they said since it's under warranty, they will send me a new one immediately (cross ship). Outstanding. I removed the hard drive out of my computer and sat it on my computer desk. I can connect the power cord to it and the hard drive works PERFECTLY fine. If I bump it or move it, it looses power. So my problem is this..

When I receive my "new" hard drive from Seagate, I need to completely mirror (copy) my "faulty" hard drive and put that information on my "new" hard drive. Any suggestions? Oh, BTW, a simple completely reinstall every single thing is not an option.

I cant access Seagates site right now but most of the hard drive manufacturers have some sort of free utility on their website that you can download and will do that for you.

is it the sata power plug itself on the PSU? because they bow out in the middle really easy... try clamping it back together and plug it back in....

No, it's not the SATA power plug on the PSU. It's the Sata Power Port on the Hard Drive itself. But, I did notice that the plastic bezel from the hard drive SATA power port is "snapped" off and is lodged inside the SATA power supply connector. Looks like I will have to get out some needle nose pliers to remove the snapped off piece of plastic out of the power supply sata connector.

If you need a free alternative, DriveImage XML from runtime.org is free and does a good job.

Thanks for the info on acronis.. However, I bought my seagate brand new (retail, not OEM). It did NOT come with acronis. I will look into that freeware app unhappy_mage. Thanks!

if the hdd came with a CD ... its called seagate disk wizard on the CD , seagate disk wizard is nothin else then acronis ;)

I did this just recently on a machine. I booted up with an Ubuntu LiveCD but I'm sure any LiveCD will do.

I then just pulled up a terminal on it and did a:

Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb

where sda is my original drive and sdb is the new drive. walked away for a bit and came back. removed sda and put sdb in its place so it became the first drive in computer... and it booted up fine like nothing had happened.
