Just a real simple question

Greetings:
I have 2x rigs folding 24/7 WinSMP, I have 1x rig using LinuxSMP 24/7, ATFM. My question is HOW do I incorporate the new "passkey" thing in either program? Do I need it for the WinSMP client? From what little bit I do understand (man, this folding home is becoming complicated) the windows SMP client is not upgraded to whatever the V6 thing is. Please ANY answer would be appreciated and before someone chimes in go to the F@H faq page, I did, and now I'm even more confused than I was before, if I hadn't shut down my F@H client for computer maintenance I wouldn't be in this sh*t to begin with. I must not use what they call the "console" method, because I didn't understand the "clicking" of the title bar routine?

It's not needed for Windows SMP yet.

Exact, the passkey is implemented in v6 clients only and Windows SMP v6 isn't released yet so don't worry for now.

Myself, I implemented the passkey on all the linux clients and one console cpu client. Remain all my Windows SMP farm to get upgraded when it will be released.

Hey, thanks for the replies. I'm pretty familiar with the F@H clients, at least I thought I was.
I've been folding for some time now, with as many as 10 dedicated folders running 24/7. I shut some of my machines down due to technological advancements ( I only try to use C2D's and above now, I think the new penryn quad is going to be a "dynamite folder"). Also to lower my electric bill (I'm on a VA pension) and because it's summer and hot as "hell". (or at least it was)
I just ran into this "passkey" thing and it confused the "hell" out of me. I don't understand why they don't simply explain this crap, if they do I apologize because I couldn't find it.
I'm familiar with having to have a "password" in WinSMP (thank God M$ extended the WinXP OS) and I'm familiar with needing the ia32-libs in the LinuxSMP client. (also the over 5 MB's thing during setup)
What I don't understand is what the "passkey" thing is or in reality how to use it. I understand the importance of it's implementation I just don't know how to implement it in either the WinSMP or LinuxSMP clients.
Again THANKS for the replies, I think most of the individuals in the F@H project are some of the best people in the world. :D
I think I blew it when I shut some of my rigs down for maintenence (to blow out the rad on my WC'ed machine and to blow out the HSF's on my "air coolers". I'm familiar with the "setting the date back" thing, but I need an accurate date and time on my rigs. So I'm not going to screw with messing with my date and time, besides the ISP adjusts it automatically.

From what I understood myself, the passkey is mostly to avoid someone else hurt you by folding illegally and if Stanford caught him, he would be forced to delete all the points no matter where it come from, including your own points. Honestly, I never heard of this myself. With the passkey, they will only strike on those who have no passkey or a certain passkey (I think a different one is generated each time we request it).

If someone can correct my infos, be welcome since myself, I'm not too sure of the exact purpose as well.

I just don't know how to implement it in either the.... LinuxSMP client.

I think it's the 2nd or 3rd thing it asks you for during setup in v6 under Linux. Just copy and paste and it's "implemented."

Okey Dokey, now I'm really confused, like I think many people have done ( I have a RL to participate in) I have already updated my clients. (both LinuxSMP and what a waste of 70% work WinSMP) Is there ANYWAY I can include this "passkey" thing in the LinuxSMP program now or do I wait until it's done the WU? (man, this folding stuff is becoming more trouble than it's worth IMO)

Ahh.. please disregard the above questions. I think I'll do what many folders have done and just join in the search for "little green men". I understand the SETI program actually supports their members and when the new penryn quad hits the bricks (9450 something) I think I'll be welcome by the SETI crowd to add my meager rigs

You can add without trashing the WU if you type fah6 -smp -configonly (note the -smp parameter, which is mandatory to avoid trashing them).

I'm real confused. Is this thread have something to do with Linux?

Pass keys?

huh?

Nothing simple here.

Can someome explain to me what is going on here... or just tell me to move along, nothing here for me...

Ahh.., I think my message has the most to do with folding, that's why it's in the folding section. From my limited understanding Stanford Univ. issues a "passkey" or "password" kind of thing for security. What I was asking was if this pass thing was needed or usable by BOTH the LinuxSMP client and the WinSMP client and , if by chance, I could implement it after I have already started a WU under BOTH programs.

Now, as far as the thing about upgrading without loosing you're work. I look at it like fighting a war and nobody gets killed. (you can do it if you know how, or at least you can get someone else killed in you're place) I'm sorry to say I did loose a WU due to upgrading (man, this folding's getting complicated), but if I'd known how not too I wouldn't have. You see I'm not one of the folding "elitist" I merely fold because I hate a lot of the freakin' diseases that plague mankind.

Oh yeah, I honestly apologize if this is some kind of a "Linux" only discussion topic thread. I thought it had to do with "distributed computing" (F@H and others) If you look at it like that I guess my post does concern Linux. (the Linux SMP folding client, hum..,.,.?)

No need to apologize for anything. This is the DC forum... anything DC belongs here. ;)

I just don't understand what the thread is about, and I hope to learn something if it can help me or others in our F@H adventures. I don't know much of anything about Linux.

And I have never heard of F@H pass keys. I still don't know what the pass keys are, or if I even need to know about them.

Keep on Folding! Fold on!

OK jws2346, it's my turn to be confused. May I ask how you started v6 without entering the passkey in the first place? It's been required in both v6 versions I've tried (Linux"SMP"/Windows uniprocessor). I just checked and it's the 3rd thing it asks for when you set it up after ID and Team Number.

What's a passkey?
The passkey is a unique identifier that ties your contributions directly to you (not just those with your username) and allows you to prevent others from cheating in your name. Obtain a passkey from our web site (see below), enter it when you configure the client, and the client and servers will do the rest. You should keep your passkey secret.

okay

Thanks Aldamon for the link about pass keys !!! ;)

I am getting up to speed.

What is a version six client?
All v6 clients require passkeys now.

Do I have any of those ???

Folding@Home v.6 Client

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Where can I download it?
You'll see it on our main download page: folding.stanford.edu/download.html.

What's changed?
All the modifications from the previous version are listed in the change log. On the download page, just click on the version number link that's immediately to the left of your download link. Changes of particular note:

- support in client and backend infrastructure for passkey
- accept message from server (for example PRFC) and print to unitinfo and
queueinfo (only on units assigned from servers supporting this)
- integration of SMP support into the standard client. Run with the -smp
flag on eligible hardware to receive SMP units.
- detailed detection of CPU type and features
- no benchmark on startup
- We regret that a v6 Windows/SMP client is not yet available.

What's a passkey? .....

I found some more stuff to answer my questions. Might be useful to some.

I never go to Stanford's site. I get all of my folding mojo here at the horde.

Aldamon, actually, it's not required and I tried 2 times without entering and it works, just leave it blank.

Ah, I see. I guess I'm a drone then. I just put one in because it was easy to get one and assumed it was required. :D

Yeah, it was easy so it's a case of "why not ?". If it is complicated, just dust it under the carpet and fold away :)

It may or may not help any confusion you have
Step 1: I downloaded the clients from the F@H download section
Step 2 : I installed them as I have usually done many times with the F@H clients, both windoz and Linux. (uniprocesser and SMP)
I didn't see where it asked for any kind of passkey from F@H's website. I just gave my folding name, the team to be credited with my folding pernts, the over 5 MB file thing and the # of the machine I was installing the particular client on.. If I missed something about "passkeys" I humbly apologize, maybe I'm not on the ball enough to just run F@H and leave it running 24/7.

After about 500,000 pernts for another team and almost the same for this team, plus a few incedental pernts for nobody but me and not being one of the folding "elite" I wish I could help with you're confusion. Good luck finding an answer

Not sure why you're being so defensive. We're just trying to figure out why you're not seeing what everyone else using v6 is.

You've got to be kiddin'. If that statement appears to be offensive, I apologize. It was not meant to be offensive, defensive or any sive out there. If anything it was an example of the fact I didn't just start folding when I joined this team. If folding is becoming so complicated I can't understand it (I did miss the passkey thing you said everybody else saw) I'll leave off using the F@H clients (both uniprocessor (SP) and SMP) and look for another program. I lost my birth mother to cancer and I am starting to loose another "loved one" to another of the freakin' diseases that our dynamite scientists, lab people, doctors and a lot of health care people are trying to find the cure for. You can "take to the bank" I'm going to do WHATEVER I can to help (because you see, I'm NOT A DOCTOR OR HEALTH CARE SPECIALIST), whether it be for F@H or another program. Enough said

Version 6.00 Beta1 of Windows graphical asks for a passkey.
Version 6.00 Beta 1 of Windows no nonsense console asks for a passkey.
Verison 6.00 Beta1 of Linux asks for a passkey.

Version 5.xx of ANY client does not ask for a passkey. This includes Windows SMP.

Xilikon has confirmed that a passkey is not required to run any of the programs. However, this is from the FAQ:

What's the purpose?
Previously we have not had unique identifiers in Folding@Home (usernames for example can be shared by many people). One main benefit of passkeys is that if someone cheats, we will not need to zero out the points of everyone with that username -- only the offending party and those without passkeys. Perhaps more interestingly, we plan to shortly institute credit bonuses, which will be tied to passkeys. Finally, the existence of passkeys opens up future possibility of displaying to you your individual credit and other information, rather than just by username.

I don't know about you, but this sounds like a good thing. I like bonuses!

Good luck and please keep folding!

A potential thing i would like to see is the ability to follow the stats by machine like Boinc is able to do. I guess a combination of machinekey and passkey will provide this.

jws2346, I'm feeling you are more frustrated than being defensive by the complexity of the F@H setup. Keep in mind that the BETA clients isn't meant for those who want to casually fold without pulling some hair. Those clients will need some housekeeping to run them. If you want something easy and still contribute to the science, you could consider WCG since we have also a team there. The Boinc client is very easy to setup and very flexible ;)

Hey thanks Xilikon, I went to the WCG thing and installed it on my little ole' floor model E6300. As soon as the WU's finish (or maybe sooner) I'll put the rest of my little group of machines on it.

Oh yea, as long as I've been fooling with computers I understand about the attention beta needs. That's one of the reasons I went with WC'ing on 1 of my E6600's, I think WC'ing needs more attention than air cooling (especially for the mild OC'ing I do) Enjoyed the ride, later

I wonder if the new quads are going to run as hot as the Q6600's? I may have to WC' a penryn :D

Just be sure to put team 1411 and look at the stats here for wCG as well :)

I guess Yorkfields (Penryn quads) will be a bit cooler than Q6600 for sure.

Hey my man: (Xilikon)
I tried the WGC thing and didn't like it (to each his own, as long as he's payin' the light bill and buying the computers) I'm back to using the F@H SMP clients. I have emailed and got my passkey thing. I did the input thing in Ubuntu (fah6), but I didn't notice the imput thing in windoz (shrug)
Anyhoo... EVERYTHING is copacetic with my machines now. Until the pen's hit the bricks Ill just fold with ole' tech :D (the 9450 something is suppose to have 12 MB's cache )

Since when I'm a she ???

Chill brother Xilikon, it was my mistake for not being "politically correct" I almost forgot the ole' saying "you never want to Toff the high muckity mucks in the sewing circle". Once again I apologize sincerely for my racist attitude, I'm sure there are many brave humans of either sexual preference or gender and all should be respected. (even the self professed computer gurus) At least that's what I concluded from the little bit I saw and heard in 4x yrs of the USMC and about 13 months Viet Nam.

Then bitchslap him for being gay ;)

jws2346, don't worry, I'm used to be called a she due to my first name, which is Stephane, not Stephanie like americans would assume ;)

Good idea Xilikon, only a couple of problems with it
1( you can't do much bitch slapping over the internet
2) I'm not familiar with Canadian law, but in America you'd be in a "heap" of trouble for even disrespecting a gay, let alone smacking one ;)

Eekers  I'm American and I'd never think a Stephane was a female. Sometimes I feel like I live in a cave, not intertwined by society.

This is a very strange thread.

I think I will remain confused. :(
