Question: Can you replace panels yourself?

With the Dell "Panel Lottery" and other companies switching out panels for cheaper ones, it makes me wonder something. If for example you owned a 24" TN screen and wanted to replace it with a better panel (MVA/PVA/IPS), could you just swap it out? How hard would that be?

I've never opened a panel so I don't know. I have noticed there are distributors who sell the panel by themselves, I think mainly to repair shops, but I'm sure they can be had. As seen at this distributor :

you see its the 26" IPS panel. Many can be found with a search.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I doubt you could switch models, since the controllers would be specific to each panel. I suppose if you bought the controllers for the new panel, yes. But the cost would probably be as much as a new monitor.

So you are saying when Dell changed out panels, they changed the "controllers" too? As for it being just as expensive, I'm not so sure about that. But then again, I don't know much about the whole process either.

Sure, if you're proficient at that sort of thing and have the right tools/materials. I do think it would have to be an exact replacement (not a swap to a different panel type) to be 100% successful though.
