Has anyone been able to get this version of the quad to OC past 3.1?
I am having a heck of a time getting mine to. It's not the temps stopping it.
Just not sure what it is.
I have tried various vcore voltages with FSB at 1420 & no luck. Memory voltage at 2.01 & 1.92 & no luck.
Any ideas and/or advices?

mine is at 3.2, will boot into windows at 3.6, but isn't stable. I am 1600fsb x 8 vcore 1.367

disabled all the cpu features other than virtualization, pushed up the vcore to 1.376, set my memory divider to 2, fsb to 400, cpu multiplier to 8. ddr2 voltage to +.2, fsb +.1, gmch +.1, pcie clock to 103. Changed cpu fan speed to run at max. And manually set my spd settings.

Memory divider? I haven't seen that in my bios.
So I should lower the multi to 8 ?

Ok, vcore is at 1.375 as there is no 1.376.
FSB at 1400.
Memory voltage at 2.01.
Timings at 5-5-5-12 2t.
I tried FSB at 1420 & 1440 with no luck.
Would not load past the mobo logo.

Try dumping more voltage into the CPU, around 1.4-1.5v depending on your cooling.

You know that the BIOS voltages are gonna about .15 lower with actual because of some sort of voltage drop when the system gets going. Use CPU-Z the latest one or CoreTemp to get a more accurate idea of what the CPU is really at when operating.

Mine is set at 1.4-1.45v and in Windows it's actually anywhere from 1.32-1.36v.

Other than that I've been able to run most Q6600's at 1400-1450 FSB, however with my current setup I've been having stability issues.

Only @ 1333 FSB super solid right now, it's hard with 4x sticks of memory all at 4-4-4-12 -_-

My mobo is the ASUS P5N-e with the 0608 bios.

chanchan, I am using the Tuniq Tower.
I have tried higher vcores before with no luck.

Core speed is 3150.
Voltage, according to cpu-z is 1.328.
Can't run coretemp as it needs driver signing turned off & F8 at startup does not give that option to disable it.

I did manage to get my friends B3 up to about 3.2ghz, but I didn't want the voltages to get too high. I'm sure that it could have gone a bit further, but I didn't really want to.

Do I need high vcore when increasing the fsb?
I currently have it at 1.295/1.312 according to cpu-z with FSB at 1400 core speed 3150.

You can't just keep upping the CPU Vcore, I don't have an Nvidia mobo but the Northbridge Vcore has a huge effect on overclocking success, and whats your FSB termination voltage at?

Actually, I am dropping the vcore.
What do you mean by termination voltage?

Been dropping it to see how low I can get it while keeping the fsb higher than stock.

if it isn't even posting, upping the vcore is exactly what you should be doing. Once you can boot it and are stable, then you try to get the lowest vcore setting you can.

I'm on that same pc now & it's been running fine without any bsods even under load with team fortress classic loaded.

The only time I really had an issue is when I tried to load at 1420 fsb. Wouldn't get past the mobo logo.

You should have read this before making a statement like that.

Overclocking is more complicated than just adjusting two settings in the BIOS, because as you increase the FSB, you'll also need to increase the core voltage (vcore) which is the actual juice going to the processor. As well, you may have to increase the other voltages on the board like: memory, FSB, NB, SB, ICH chipset.

i know it is more complicated than that, and i wasn't implying it is simple. Just responding to him saying that he was lowering his vcore. Which when it won't post, is not something I would do.

The whole time I have been overclocking, I have never touched the NB voltage at all.
Should I do it to get it to post at 1420 FSB?
I just have the stock cooler on it.

overclocking a quad with a stock cooler is a very very very bad idea. You shouldn't get it to 1420fsb, you should leave it at stock until you get a better heatsink. Have you checked your temps? use speed fan, and manually add 15c to each core to get the correct temp

I stated awhile ago that the tuniq tower is what I am using.

Been running at 1400 for about a week-ish without any real issues.
My bios will list my temps as 40-42cel. Pc probe shows it as 38 currently.
Speedfan shows it at low 30s so to add 15 would put it around mid 40s.

Now my next question is, since speedfan is so inaccurate, why bother recommending it????
If it is truly off that much, why don't the devs make it so it's NOT?

Your overclocking your quad core on the stock heatsink? If you are I would stop now and return all setting back to stock.

i believe there is only one speedtemp dev, Mr. Alfredo Milani Comparetti. Your bios, probe and all are detecting your cpu temp outside the die, which is not an issue. What you do need to pay attention to is the core temps under load. Check with an adjusted speedfan what your cores are loading at under prime95 for at least 2hrs. And yes you still can use core temp as long as you temporarily disable driver signing enforcement when you are booting up by hitting f8.

Unadjusted speedfan shows idle at low 30s, so that is 45-50 and there is usually a 20c difference between idle and load, even more so with a stock cooler, so that puts your estimated load at least at 65. I really wouldn't go above 65.

When I am running Speed Fan along with Core Temp and TAT all show readings really close with one another. Don't know why your temps are so off.

you said right here you were using the stock cooler, or were you talking about the nb? If so your temps about match mine, i load around 61c. sorry if i misread

just curious.. did lapping bring down your temps a significant amount?

Stock cooler for the NB. :)

I can't run core temp as F8 does not give that option on Vista. TAT just closes on Vista.

Ok, I got coretemp working & it shows temps as the following on default voltages etc:

core 0 47cel
core 1 47cel
core 2 44cel
core 3 43cel

I have ordered AS5 & the cleaner to go with it this morning.

L.o.D. Did you ever figure out what the problem was with your 3.0 Ghz wall? I have a similiar setup as you (P5N-e and Q6600) and the exact same problem. Nothing I've tried will get me even 10 Mhz past the 3.0 GhZ mark. It doesn't even post, just sits at the first screen. The funny thing is, I overclocked the system to 3.0 Ghz on stock voltage the very first time with no problems at 1:1 with the RAM. I've tried all equations from 3.0 to 3.6 with the 9 multiplier.

I've tried all voltage on cpu right up to 1.5V with no success and have even upped the NB Voltage to 1.4v. No dice. I've tried a couple 8X cpu multipliers - no go. Any ideas? Would it make any difference whatsoever if I started using some 6X and 7X cpu multipliers? What is the offset to +100mav all about? At 3.0 GHZ I'm at about 50-53 degrees under load so I think my cooling can handle a bit more volts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've problems as well with any of the newer bios flashes as per your thread here - http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1220198

Also - I'm missing how the fellow got his machine to 3.6GHz with the FSB in the pics as well in this post!!! http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1219478

I'm new at this overclocking stuff so please excuse the language and any details I've missed!!

Heres my system info:

Asus P5N-e SLI Mobo
Bios from December 06 - 0307 (no luck with any newer bios)
Intel Quad Core Q6600 B3 Stepping @ 3.0GHz (333X9X1333 FSB)
Zalman 9700 Cooler
EVGA 640 mb 8800 GTS Superclocked
2 GB Corsair XMS DDR2-800 (4-4-4-12 @ 1T)
3 Sata/2 IDE Drives
Vista X86

I had it at 3.1 for awhile easily enough with vcore around 1.32.
Which bios are you using?
Don't use the newest one as it has stopped me from overclocking at all.

I've used a couple of bios from teh past....you're right, the latest one will not OC at all.

So your using the 9X multiplier right now? Do you remember any changes you made to get to 3.1? Not that .1 is enough for me to worry, but I'm still on a quest to get to 3.6 if it's possible with this mobo. If not, will see about trading it in....seems there are a number of asus pk deluxe (or something liek that) that are successfully OC'ing to 3.6 on air.

Jason

Only changes I made from default were the vcore, memory voltage, FSB.
I have downgraded my bios back to 0608 & I can oc again. Will leave it at 3GHz till my AS5 comes in.
My idle temps are at 48 right now.
