Okay so I'm confused I've tried reading about it I guess I'm kinda lost so fill in the blanks for me please.
Folding @ Home is calculating protein changes in dna? or mapping out the human genome?
So is it doing calculations on like the 5 or so diseases listed or mapping out people dna, and how is it doing this exactly for some reason I think of this stuff like whole bunch of computers networked across the internet calculating pi or something like that?

Has folding actually produced anything useful for researched or unlocked anything or getting close?

What % of your cpu / bandwidth does it use up?

a 939 3000+ at 2.4-2.5Ghz with 4x512mb of DDR 3500 be a productive folder or would it be mediocre?

Is there a listing of groups folding whos in the lead? Where do I find it?

I can't answer all of your questions (thought I'm sure others can), but here's what I can contribute:

You can choose what % of your CPU will be used by the folding program, and you can define a max amount of RAM. You can also change the priority of the folding program, so it won't take away from other processes unless you tell it to.

On the productiveness of the rig you listed, that's a relative question. When I first started, I thought my Opty 165 putting out around 1000 PPD on the SMP client was a lot, but the I realized how much the C2Q's put out. But in all seriousness, everything helps, no matter how small/slow the contribution. Sometimes the question of what to keep or what to sell in the name of other upgrades comes into question, but that's a personal call. As for what that actual rig will do, I'd guess around 80-90 PPD (that's what I get on each of the cores on my PC-DL @ 3.015 Ghz and about what my Pentium M @ 1.86 gets), but i'm just guessing.

As for stats, hardfolding.com is a great page, but it's down because of the same problems that the rest of [H] faces. In the meantime, a lot of members are using ExtremeOverclocking (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=33).

I'm just retiring a X2 3800 OC'd to 2.4ghz, and the most recent points per day was running about 120 to 150 per core. I am also retiring an Socket 754 2.4ghz system; they are alright producers, but I wanted to switch everything to dual core because it saves substantial electricity over single core systems.

Folding is more of a basic research type of thing, and sometimes the data that is published leads in unexpected directions. It also moves general medical knowledge that much more forward. But I do recall that there is an improved protein-based detection test for prostate cancer that directly came out of the papers Stanford published.

In any case, welcome aboard.

IIRC, Vijay Pande (The lead guy of the F@H team) said that what they do is pure research to understand how proteins fold and works. This is the first step and when we grasp the whole concept clearly, we can then move forward to applied research to find cures. In other words, before we run, we need to learn to walk.

Welcome to the DC forum :)

Pharmacutical companies usually do applied research and I'm guessign berkley does some of the same. I'm just curious if this is even paid much attention to there? I mean I'm surprised berkley couldn't buy like 100 2 core quadcore racks from like dell or something and just write it off in taxes for research to do this. 800 cores of folding I wonder how many pts that would gain per day.

hey Glow....

time to start folding. Put "33" for your Team... that is for Hard OCP. Enter your folding name and start racking up some points.

Your boxen will do some nice points. I have one just like it.
