Car subwoofers

I remember a thread either here or in GenMay talking about car subwoofers (or rather some) being strong enough to erase a drive. Since I'll be moving in a couple of weeks and I want to put my computer in the trunk right next to my subwoofer. I want to know if this is going to be strong enough to pull all that data of my drives or not.

No it won't matter. You would have to have the magnet like almost physically touching the drive. Keep in mind that the strength of the magnet goes WAY down the farther you are from it. Even a strong magnet a foot away isn't really that strong, and I'm assuming the drive will be inside a case. You would be more likely to damage the drive via vibrations if it's seeking while the sub is going or while you're driving along on a bumpy road. You might look into laptop drives I believe they tend to have a higher tolerance for that sort of thing.

I would be much much more worried about the vibration the sub causes.

I would at least get a laptop drive or Seagate actually makes an automotive series of drives that handle vibrations much better.

I think all he wants to do is just move his computer from one house to another and is afraid that his computer will get erased if he listens to music. I doubt he is gonna put a computer in his car and use it.

I'm not worried about vibrations at all. I know hard drives can take a lot and keep on ticking. Besides, when I move, my car will be packed so my sub moving around isn't going to be much of an issue. ;)

That is exactly what I am worried about.

One guy I knew in college actually placed his computer right next to his sub box cause it fit perfectly there, and they were 2 - 10"s inside a wooden box, he never had any problems and he traveled across the country that way.
So you should be safe.

I moved 3 servers 1600 miles and they were sitting next to my JL 10W7 the entire time. No problems with anything.

Question, if moving the pc's is worrying you... couldn't you just drop the sub off at your destination (assuming you have a box sub) and then go to get your machines?

Either way, you should have no problems with this move and the magnets.

These are good to know.

Ockie, I'm moving 300 miles so it will be kinda of hard to do this. :p

Nah, it won't be hard, just make two trips!! :D

lol, 5 hours one way, that is plenty of driving at one time thank you very much (yes, I've driven 1000 miles for 14 hours straight before....alone, not fun).

you could always put the case either in the frt or back seat and not in the trunk with the subs

Heh, made it from Idaho to New Jersey in 3 days and like 8 hours or something, up at 8am bed around midnight, now that is a drive, all 2500 miles.
Back on topic, I think we beat the horse dead, cut it up and ran it through a press enough to say that the computer next to subs should be ok for the short drive he is doing.

I am taking two computers and stuffing my car full, so I am on limited space :(

Yup, dead horse indeed.

Thanks everyone for your help.
