Many big name companies jumped into Second Life seeing it as a great advertising opportunity. Unfortunately, they are now running back to where they came from.

The reasons for the failures are open to debate; from firms not engaging Second Life citizens, through to simply a lack of actual people using Second Life (the LA Times says it peaks at 40,000 users at any one given time).

I thought about playing Second Life, but I decided it'd probably be best if I get a first one.

according to those commercials if you've been hard longer than 4 hours to consult a doctor :D

Companies are so quick to jump on the "fad wagon" and this is the direct result....wasted money and time.

It looks like people are finally realizing the Second Life is just a 3D sex chatroom. I can only imaging the look on some of the exec's faces when they saw their first furry or pedo walk into their "store."

Kind of like anything Apple makes?

I'd like them to make an iEuthanasia device. It would make my life at work a lot easier.

um? huh?

anyway, seems kind of silly to spend money on something that at most would net you 40,000 pairs of eyes... thats like a bad FOX show ooooo :D

... the attempts I've seen by companies in Second Life were counter-intuitive to the nature of Second Life. SL is first and foremost a social medium. For some idiotic reason, advertisers thought doing giant massive builds with interesting buildings and maybe some freebies would somehow generate attention. Sadly, since they failed to provide anyone to actually talk to or interact with, the builds were just boring empty shells.
Traditional passive advertising doesn't make sense for an interactive medium.

For the crowd their supposedly trying to reach, I could see some potential backlash from the advertising. Am I the only one who has intentionally avoided a product or brand (in my case, taco bell) just because the advertising was so stupid, pointless, and annoying? There's no way 2L'ers would pay attention to those ads, and at best, you'd piss em all off.
