e4300/4400 vs e6550

going to be building a PC mainly for encoding, and to use when im home.

the 4xxx series seems like its nice and cheap, and overclocks really well. the e6550 seems like a real nice chip too, and it has a 1333 FSB.

which would you all recommend? ive heard the e4xxx can go up to 3ghz most of the time.

ill be buying the following stuff (excuse the chip being in there, its just saved.)



if i get the e43/4400 im sure ill need to do some overclocking with it eventually. the 6550 on the other hand, id probably just leave it where it is for now.

this will be a primary machine when im home, which is everyday.
 
Well if you are going to leave the E6650 at stock then get the e4400 and overclock it.

but wouldnt the 6550 be better in the long run? i dont intend to upgrade for a few years.

oh and, i would overclock it after x months

Well wait for the price drops and get either the e6850 or Q6600 then.
 
I'd go with an overclocked e4x00 to 3+ ghz, and put the $50 savings into a nice fast 7200.10 HD.

yeah man you should be able to overclock the 4300 to atleast 6550 speeds i would think not much risk there.

And correct me if im wrong the higher bus is a bad thing for overclocking because you will already by pushing your Mobo FSB with the low multiplier

6550 would need good motherboard and ram due to 7x multiplier. but that said, it'd get to 3.6-4.0 with ease assuming mb+ram are up to snuff.

e43 would be a good choice. 9x333 would give you 3ghz right there. you should be able to easily squeeze more out of it too
 
The 4300 has a 9x multiplier, I have two of them at 3.1 without raising the Vcore, just modest FSB increases.

They are great chips for the price.:D

hence a 1333mhz bus :) On a 4300. But 4400 is the same price with a 10x multi might as well go wit hthat right?
 
if you can get e43/44 at same price and are trying to keep fsb as low as possible, then go for the e44.
 
i used to know all about overclocking back in the PC3200 days, now, no idea.

what can i expect from some decent ram, etc.... settings.

Just looking for some of your guys opinions on what i should buy. dont really wanna go over 100$ final cost on ram, but will go 120 max.

oh and, motherboards.....either gonna be a g33/p35 board... probably the g33, and probably the only g33 gigabyte board on EGG

???

by the way, which is more desirable the 4300 or 4400? as of today.
