Does ata to sata convertors work?

Well, for $30 more you can get a Sata 2 80GB Seagate Baracuda 7200.10 drive that would blow the socks off an old IDE HD - let alone one connected via a bridge.

That bridge may or may not work - the newegg reviews don't look promising.

I'd just bite the bullet and spend $42 on a decent sata HD and slap the old IDE HD in as a storage HD or in an external usb case.

Prolly yes, but a cheap add in ata pci card would be better, and buying a mobo that has enough ata ports even better.. It sucks that some mobos these days only have one ata port, supporting 2 drives, instead of what used to be the norm, 2 ports(4drives).. Why not buy a new HD?? I mean, you can get 500gig models for around $100 to $120.. And smaller drives for well under a c-note..

well would u be able to install windows using the ide pci card?

What mobo is being purchased for this build? How many ata drives including cd/dvd are going to be used??? That info would really help us help you.. Is he really insisting that there be no new drives??

Someone will yell at me for this but, if you only have one ata connector on the mobo, (some newer mobos only have one), you can slave an ata cd/dvd drive and hard drive together .. Minimal loss of speed during normal pc usage as long as the cd/dvd drive supports ata66 or better(most newer ones do).. Installing things to the hd from cd/dvd and burning discs can be painfully slow though because it can only access one drive at a time..

Yes you can install Xp to a hd attached to an addin card.. Sometimes you will have to hit F6 during install and give Xp setup the drivers off of a floppy, but sometimes you don't with non-raid ata controller cards..

probably, but you can get Silicon Image based ones off e-bay for less than $11.
