Time Magazine has listed the 5 worst websites of all time and, just so you know, MySpace made the list. :)

It seems the community has become infested with marketers and other opportunists who create false profiles and essentially spam other users, all under the guise of "making friends."

I dunno about "of all time" but I agree with evite being on there right now. The site reminds me of the internet circa 1998. It needs a serious overhaul.

It's interesting how they site there own articles and note that "The site also discriminates against gays." (Concerning Eharmony). When last time I checked the law suite was not settled, and the opinions vary greatly concerning this.

Journalism at it's worst

Where did they talk about any law suit. The reason they said that statement is becuse they think its wrong to dicriminate against gays. How was it bad journalism in any way?

It's bad journalism because it presents opinions as "facts". If you're gonna say what you think about something, label it as an editorial or opinion piece.

Oh yeah, and citing your own articles is usually a big no-no. It's like arguing that something is true because you said it.

Ya know... it really should have struck me at first glance what was wrong with the whole article. It was written by Time Magazine. You wanna talk about hacks (IMHO), that's the place to start.

Everything they write is always slanted so heavily I can't believe the whole office building doesn't fall over.

#6, Time's Website, for requiring me to load 5 different pages to view each 1 paragraph summary of why the site sucked.

Myspace is obvious for many reasons, but another reason to add to the list is that a lot Myspace pages are initiating portscans on peoples computers

Thanks to Myspace I now have 6,523,411 friends that want to sell me \/1Ag/\rA.

Security breach anyone? If you want Internet nasties (worms viruses), then go to that site.

You guys and Time Magazine are just in denial... I 100% certain those 500 hot girls that add me to their myspace everyday really just want my dorky self.....

I guess eHarmony did do one thing right.

The site also discriminates against gays.

Wow, if this isn't a loaded opinion I don't know what is. What does anything with gays have to do about the WORST websites?!

This is a pathetic top 5.

I agree, it's pathetic. Asus should be at #1 for having the single worst website on the internet.

It's pretty damn bad. On 5 different computers I have to click on the motherboards product page link TWICE to get it to load. Not to mention finding stuff or downloading anything from them is a joke at best. Many smaller motherboard companies have far better websites than ASUS does. ASUS is one of the largest motherboard manufacturers on the planet (not counting thier other stuff) and they really have no excuse for having such a shitty website.

The talk about the lawsuit in the article they cited.

A class-action lawsuit was inevitable. It was filed yesterday by a lesbian from (naturally) the San Francisco Bay Area. She claims that eHarmony's no-gays policy is discriminatory under California law. The company replied that it might offer gay matching services in the future and denied that it discriminates.

Which is silly: of course it discriminates, in the most basic sense of the term — it doesn't allow gays to use its site!...

Depending on what E-harmony has publicly stated (which should come out in court) this is a opinion, that they are stating as fact. Gays could certainly use the site to find their straight friends a mate, making that statement a bit premature.

E-harmonys stance is that it simply does not offer those services as they do not have expertise in that area.
Neil Clark Warren (Founder of E-harmony) - I don't know exactly what the dynamics are [with gay couples]...We've done a deep amount of research on about 5,000 married people, but never on people who are same-sex. So we don't know how to do that, and we think the principles probably are different, and so we've never chosen to do it.

It's a long debate, which is not my point. My point is that the jury is still out on this one and their journalism in both articles is highly questionable.

eHarmony.com = private company

They have the right to refuse service to anyone they please.

And let's not forget there's Match.com, and certainly many others out there. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a dating site specifically for those being 'discriminated against' - whining wankers. The legal system in this country is pathetic - I don't like you so I want millions of $$$$ dammint! Hey how about this - if you don't like eHarmony's practices, DON'T bloody well use them!

I think MySpace should have been #1 as well.

There are tons specializing in the minority groups and ONLY for the minority groups.

This is true.

I don't see anything wrong with them not offering same sex dating services. The fact is that if they don't have a compatibility engine developed for same sex coupling due to not knowing the dynamics involved in gay relationships, it seems perfectly reasonable not to offer those services. However I think it's a bad business move as they are essentially denying themselves a large customer base. That's there loss financially and the woman filing the suit should simply take her business elsewhere. There are plenty of other sites offering the services she is seeking.

With the current facts at hand neither do I, but that's not my point. My point was that TIME shouldent be stating something as fact when the whole story (in the eyes of the court) has not been heard.

I think we are all agreeing on it, I was trying to make a point about the quality of those TIME articles in responce to Pettybone's original responce.

Gotcha.

Haven't seena lot of commotion about SecondLife but as a computer affiliated person/programmer I find it hard to believe the majority of people here would oppose it; I also have a hard time finding that it made the top 5 ..... thats the best advertisement I have ever seen.

The Goods:
People no only go and have sex and chat like kids. For the most part, if you're a programmer then you have a ticket to freedom. It has on the fly scripting support for objects that are limited by your ability.

There are a lot of mom and pop shops that sell items that make the game more worthy of playing. For instance, some shop owners make white collar salary by sitting and doing nothing other than parting profits with people that put stuff in there shop or they simply keep all of the money on their own items.

A friend of mine programs stuff for the game to sell to shops to then redistribute for him (and you can limit what's editable/protected in the code). In return, I use Photoshop to make ads to promote/sell his programmed objects that range from guns to objects that can hover around you like the fairy on Zelda: Ocarina of Time. He makes one object, and sells as many copies possible without ever having to make another object. I get paid and the store distributor gets paid per item sold. It's great in that aspect, but as far as 'playing' the game, I have no idea. Im not into it.

There's a marketing standpoint though for programmers.

The Bad:
You read it, no doubt they need more headroom. They have however been growing exponentially and are like a small business in a constant strain to become the next Verizon.

Where did they talk about any law suit. The reason they said that statement is becuse they think its wrong to dicriminate against gays. How was it bad journalism in any way?
Because it doesn't discriminate gays. That argument is so stupid it's ridiculous. It just doesn't service them. To discriminate against gays would be to have a checkbox asking if they were gay, if checked they couldn't proceed. That's discrimination.

Gays are more than welcome to browse the product, but if they don't have a product that suits them, well they just have to go somewhere else. That's not discrimination.

So maybe that's not bad journalism in this article, but their own that they cite to :D

Worst top x list ever. I could name 100 worse websites. Every website they listed is making millions of dollars for there owners... what a joke

Can't discriminte though. Tha'ts a difference. If you're a prick, I can refuse service. If I refuse service because you're black, mexican, asian, gay or otherwise, that's discrimination.

I must point out though that race is in a different class of protection than gays/gender. Race is elevated to strict scrutiny, gender/sex preference is one tier lower under intermediate srutiny.
