A couple geniuses, using a botnet to distribute their pump-and-dump stock scam, actually sent a spam to a SEC lawyer and quickly found themselves behind bars.

On Monday, Darrel Uselton, 40, of Katy, Texas, and his uncle, Jack Uselton, 69, of Houston, face organized criminal activity and money laundering charges, along with securities fraud charges. Both men, who were indicted on July 3 by a Harris County grand jury, still are the subject of an ongoing investigation being conducted by several states and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

They had 4.2 million and that was not enough...now all they will have to do is decide to be a husband or wife. :D

One question: WTH is an SEC lawyer doing receiving spam, let alone reading any of it?

Maybe they were trying to catch people doing these types of scams.

Was not described as a "honey pot" sting, so it likley wasn't. I surf w/abandon, both at home & in the office, & I get zero spam, so something's very not right w/this scenario.

My current email address lasted about 2 years without any spam. I bought something on Ebay and used it instead of my usual spam catcher address. Within 2 weeks I was getting 5 spam emails per day. Within 3 months I was up to 25. Now, about 6 months later, I get 50-80 spam emails per day. As far as I know, that Ebay transaction was the only time my email address was "in the wild" (given out to anyone but a trusted friend.

All it takes is one guy putting your email address on a spam list and soon enough you'll be getting all ads for C14lis, vl/-\gr/-\, stock quotes, etc. you would ever need.
