Media center computer build...
12 x 7200rpm sata hard drives (haven't really decided yet, maybe WD RE2)
Areca ARC-1231ML (pci express raid card)
geforce 8800gts 320mb (Already bought this :(. Maybe I should sell and get a 6600gts?)
ABIT KN9 SLI
2gb mem (2 sticks x 1gb corsair cl5)
3800+ (slight o/c of 220fsb)
USB (xbox) hd-dvdrom (has its own power)
1 x 120mm fan, 3 x 80mm fan, 1 x 92mm fan (all will be low speed, prob panaflow)
and a cheep hauppauge tv card (with mpeg encoder)

With all those hard drives you are likely gonna want something with a higher wattage. That Corsair I dont believe is really made to run that many hard drives concurrently (correct me if i'm wrong).

It isn't specifically cabled to do it natively but it may be possible. Once the drives are up and running htey don't draw a whole lot of power the big issue is spinup. If the RAID controller supports staggered spinup that can help alleviate that issue as well.

Now, if it were me I would look at something like the Enermax Infiniti for that kind of job.

Yeah, you're pushing things at startup, probably. The good news is, the GPU and CPU are very small loads at startup, so the HDDs are the major load there, and once they're spun up you're looking at what -- 10-15 watts per drive? Not sure what a harddrive pulls, really.

I'd suggest getting something with all the necessary cabling and a bit more juice. Good news is, if you already have the 620HX you can likely sell it for $10 or so less than retail at the FS/FT forum in like... 10 minutes, so the 'mistake' shouldn't cost you much.

I'm not ready to spend over $250 for a power supply... this one has enough connectors; only need 8 sata connections, hd 5in3 bay enclosure has only 2 connections, rest are going directly to the drive.

Raid card has staggered spin up (0.4sec apart)

There is also this one (but I don't know if it's as quite as corsair)...

RE2 power usage looks to be about 10watts (via techreport.com) and tweaktown.com says they support staggered spin up as well.

This setup at http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine hit 599watts

Ya but wattage wise you dont wanna operate close to the max tolerance of your PSU and even 50 or so watts from max isn't really smart (considering surge watts) and with all those hard drives you dont wanna risk it (staggering start up is great though)

Go for something around 750+ watts (so you have head room if you wanna change around your hardware later on) , lots of decent brands so you have alot to choose from and they dont cost 250 bucks.

PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 Quad has more connectors (I believe) and 60A on the 12v rail as opposed to 52 (again, I believe) with the 620HX. $200 or there-about.

It'll be fine. The 620 has 50A on the 12v rail. Lets just say each HD takes 2.5A to spin up, so that's 30A. You're still left with 20A booting everything else, should be enough. Also sell/exchange/trade the 8800GTS for a 8600GTS since it does h264 on the fly, etc.

I Use this PSU in my gaming Rig I have 3HDD and 2 USB HDD and It will Handle what you wanna do for sure with a max of 1000watt's and for under 250 bucks it is a kick ass PSU has all the Connectorsyou will need I have this thing in my Antec 900 and with a bit of Zip Ties and Cable raps it fits in there fine http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171017 I know it might be OverKill for my system right now but it is just what you need for youre system

The only real challenge you're going to get is in the initial spin-up of those drives. 12x drives would draw about 120W total if they spin up all at the same time. Depending on the model, it's usually about 50% 12V and 50% 5V, but some drives draw more from one or the other. Just about every RAID controller worth its salt has staggered spin-up now, so you should be fine. Even if it doesn't do staggered spin-up, the HX620 would be able to provide the power, but since there aren't 12 SATA connectors you'd have to use molex adapters. That'd work fine though.

The 8800GTS uses about 120-130W of power max. The rest of your stuff has very low power requirements.

Under max load and depending on which 3800+ you have, you'd be about 300-350W of real power usage I would estimate, the HX620 would handle that very easily. In fact you'd be right in the middle of the efficiency curve.

hx_efficiency_graph_419x360.gif

Notice the highest efficiency is right in the middle there? That's about where your system would be under load, and it'd be on the way up to that at idle, meaning that you'd waste very little power and produce less heat percentage wise.

If you bought a very high-wattage PSU or a lower-wattage PSU with a similar efficiency curve you'd be drawing power less efficiently.

In the interest of full disclosure, though, some PSUs have a flatter efficiency curve and if you've overvolted or gone absolutely crazy on your processor's overclock, you would probably want to look for something closer to 700-750W. Though at the speeds you're talking and with the hardware you're talking about here, I have no doubt the HX620 would work fine for you.

In my home system I have 8 SATA drives, a QX6700 overclocked to 3.3 GHz, an 8800GTX, X-Fi, 4GB of memory, couple optical drives, bunch of USB devices (my computer looks like Cthulhu with all the cables hanging off it) and stuff like that, and it's never failed to start up or run well, the exhaust from the PSU is actually only about 5C over ambient.

Oh kick ass, there is a corsair rep here :D
Looks like I'm going with this power supply yet again.

You should be able to run that no problems.

I'm running a dual core 4400, 2gb memory, X1300, 4 PCI-X 8 Port controllers and 15 drives on a seasonic S12 600... which is essentially the same PSU as your HX620. Oh and I don't use staggered spinup.

Well U mine as well go with the one I posted it is cheaper and way better..

mine as well go with the one with a single 12V rail, single 12V > multiple 12V.

But anyways, if the 620HX has enough watts, it's actually a single 12V rail also, and a very highly rated supply, so I would go with that. You can find it for pretty dang cheap too, around $130 sometimes on sale.

Holy poop that's a lot of hard drives.... I thought the OP wanted a lot

the psu will work just fine, It powers my freenas server with hp 2320 raid card 8xsegate 500gb drives and 5 wd32000aaks, rest of the system is amd opteron 148 on asus a8n sli mobo and 2gb ram.

But u will get more amps 108 with the CoolerMaster 850 that is much more then the single rail...

Look man, if you want to get down to the nitty gritty, Cooler Master doesn't even have the stats of its power supply listed on its website, at least what each rail has, so I found it here for you at GotFrag

Now you see, that's 720W on the 12V rails. Now, take a look at the Silverstone model here:
See that? 840W on the 12V rail, even though the Cooler Master has "more" amps. 1 12V rail = more efficient.

Not to mention that Silverstone has a much better reputation than Cooler Master in regards to power supplies.

I'm not saying that the CM PS is crap, but I'm showing you that you thought yours was so much better, and well... I have to disagree :D

I can see more and more everyday how I actually am a dick... *sigh*

The only problem I can see you running into with all those drives is if the PSU is a true multiple 12v rail PSU with OCP on the rail that powers SATA/4pin connectors being overloaded on bootup. From What I remember of JG's review, the corsair 620W is really a single rail PSU.
